    An Online Framework for Supporting the Evaluation of Personalised Information Retrieval Systems

    Scope - Personalised Information Retrieval (PIR) has been gaining attention because it investigates intelligent ways for enhancing content delivery. Web users can have personalised services and more accurate information. Problem - Several PIR systems have been proposed in the literature; however, they have not been properly tested or evaluated. Proposal – The authors propose a generally applicable web-based interface, which provides PIR developers and evaluators with: i) implicit recommendations on how to evaluate a specific PIR system; ii) a repository containing studies on user-centred and layered evaluation studies; iii) recommendations on how to best combine different evaluation methods, metrics and measurement criteria in order to most effectively evaluate their system; iv) a UCE methodology which details how to apply existing UCE techniques; v) a taxonomy of evaluations of adaptive systems; and vi) interface translation support (49 languages supported)

    Multilingual adaptive search for digital libraries

    This paper describes a framework for Adaptive Multilingual Information Retrieval (AMIR) which allows multilingual resource discovery and delivery using on-the-fly machine translation of documents and queries. Result documents are presented to the user in a contextualised manner. Challenges and affordances of both Adaptive and Multilingual IR, with a particular focus on Digital Libraries, are detailed. The framework components are motivated by a series of results from experiments on query logs and documents from The European Library. We conclude that factoring adaptivity and multilinguality aspects into the search process can enhance the user’s experience with online Digital Libraries

    ONTOLOGY BASED INFORMATION GATHERING FROM WEB PAGES

    Information retrieval has a well-established tradition of performing laboratory experiments on test collections to compare the relative effectiveness of different retrieval approaches. The experimental design specifies the evaluation criterion to be used to determine if one approach is better than another. Retrieval behavior is sufficiently complex to be difficult to summarize in one number, many different effectiveness measures have been proposed. A concept model is implicitly possessed by users and is generated from their background knowledge. This model learns ontological user profiles from both a world knowledge base and user local instance repositories. The ontology model is evaluated by comparing it against benchmark models in web information gathering. The results show that this ontology model is successful

    Personalized web search using clickthrough data and web page rating

    Personalization of Web search is to carry out retrieval for each user incorporating his/her interests. We propose a novel technique to construct personalized information retrieval model from the users' clickthrough data and Web page ratings. This model builds on the userbased collaborative filtering technology and the top-N resource recommending algorithm, which consists of three parts: user profile, user-based collaborative filtering, and the personalized search model. Firstly, we conduct user's preference score to construct the user profile from clicked sequence score and Web page rating. Then it attains similar users with a given user by user-based collaborative filtering algorithm and calculates the recommendable Web page scoring value. Finally, personalized informaion retrieval be modeled by three case applies (rating information for the user himself; at least rating information by similar users; not make use of any rating information). Experimental results indicate that our technique significantly improves the search performance. © 2012 ACADEMY PUBLISHER

    You Get What You Chat: Using Conversations to Personalize Search-based Recommendations

    Prior work on personalized recommendations has focused on exploiting explicit signals from user-specific queries, clicks, likes, and ratings. This paper investigates tapping into a different source of implicit signals of interests and tastes: online chats between users. The paper develops an expressive model and effective methods for personalizing search-based entity recommendations. User models derived from chats augment different methods for re-ranking entity answers for medium-grained queries. The paper presents specific techniques to enhance the user models by capturing domain-specific vocabularies and by entity-based expansion. Experiments are based on a collection of online chats from a controlled user study covering three domains: books, travel, food. We evaluate different configurations and compare chat-based user models against concise user profiles from questionnaires. Overall, these two variants perform on par in terms of NCDG@20, but each has advantages in certain domains

    Context Sensitive Search String Composition Algorithm using User Intention to Handle Ambiguous Keywords

    Finding the required URL among the first few result pages of a search engine is still a challenging task. This may require number of reformulations of the search string thus adversely affecting user's search time. Query ambiguity and polysemy are major reasons for not obtaining relevant results in the top few result pages. Efficient query composition and data organization are necessary for getting effective results. Context of the information need and the user intent may improve the autocomplete feature of existing search engines. This research proposes a Funnel Mesh-5 algorithm (FM5) to construct a search string taking into account context of information need and user intention with three main steps 1) Predict user intention with user profiles and the past searches via weighted mesh structure 2) Resolve ambiguity and polysemy of search strings with context and user intention 3) Generate a personalized disambiguated search string by query expansion encompassing user intention and predicted query. Experimental results for the proposed approach and a comparison with direct use of search engine are presented. A comparison of FM5 algorithm with K Nearest Neighbor algorithm for user intention identification is also presented. The proposed system provides better precision for search results for ambiguous search strings with improved identification of the user intention. Results are presented for English language dataset as well as Marathi (an Indian language) dataset of ambiguous search strings.
