    Performance of DB2 Enterprise-Extended Edition on NT with Virtual Interface Architecture

    Abstract. DB2 Universal Database Enterprise-Extended Edition (DB2 UDB EEE) is a parallel relational database management system using a sharednothing architecture. DB2 UDB EEE uses multiple nodes connected by an interconnect and partitions data across these nodes. The communication protocol used between nodes of DB2 UDB EEE has historically been Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) / Internet Protocol (IP) but has now been extended to include the Virtual Interface (VI) Architecture. This paper discusses a new protocol termed Virtual Interface Protocol (VIP), built on top of the primitives provided by the VI Architecture. DB2 UDB EEE with VIP on a fast interconnect has shown significant improvement in reducing the elapsed time of queries when compared with TCP/IP over fast ethernet.     The database systems have nowadays an increasingly important role in the knowledge-based society, in which computers have penetrated all fields of activity and the Internet tends to develop worldwide. In the current informatics context, the development of the applications with databases is the work of the specialists. Using databases, reach a database from various applications, and also some of related concepts, have become accessible to all categories of IT users. This paper aims to summarize the curricular area regarding the fundamental database systems issues, which are necessary in order to train specialists in economic informatics higher education. The database systems integrate and interfere with several informatics technologies and therefore are more difficult to understand and use. Thus, students should know already a set of minimum, mandatory concepts and their practical implementation: computer systems, programming techniques, programming languages, data structures.     X-Databases - The Integration of XML into Enterprise Database Management Systems

    An examination of how the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and database management systems (DBMS) fit together, and current approaches to providing database technologies that support XML. Analysis of how XML is being deployed in four classes of XML Database (X-Database) applications provides a basis for understanding the direction of X-Database technology and associated standards. In a simple implementation, an XML Document Type Definition (DTD) is mapped to relational structures, and XML data are stored in a DBMS (Oracle8i). Sample queries are presented to retrieve XML from the database. A middleware tool (XSQL Java Servlet) is used to transform query results into records on a Web page. The results demonstrate that relational databases require data to be rigidly mapped to relational structures. The paper concludes by exploring future challenges to integrating XML and DTDs with X-Databases, which establishes the need for a more "native" integration approach
