Heterogeneous data source integration for smart grid ecosystems based on metadata mining
The arrival of new technologies related to smart grids and the resulting ecosystem of applications andmanagement systems pose many new problems. The databases of the traditional grid and the variousinitiatives related to new technologies have given rise to many different management systems with several formats and different architectures. A heterogeneous data source integration system is necessary toupdate these systems for the new smart grid reality. Additionally, it is necessary to take advantage of theinformation smart grids provide. In this paper, the authors propose a heterogeneous data source integration based on IEC standards and metadata mining. A QoS monitoring system in a heterogeneous multi-domain DVB-H platform
The MobileTV, IPTV, and DVB standards (DVB-H/T) have been defined to offer mobile users interactive multimedia services with quality of service (QoS) consistency analogous to TV services. However, the market has yet to provide effective and economical solutions for the real-time delivery of such services to the corresponding transmitters over multi-domain IP networks. The monitoring system proposed in this paper enables the QoS in the IP networks involved in the delivery of real-time multimedia content to the transmitters to be ascertained. The system utilizes the QoS parameters defined in MPEG-2 Transport Streams to detect problems occurring in the heterogeneous multi-domain IP networks. The ability to detect problems having an adverse effect on QoS allows appropriate control actions to be determined to recover the QoS across the composite IP network. The design and implementation of the proposed QoS-Monitoring system (QoS-MS) is presented, followed by analysis of experimental results that demonstrate the feasibility of the system
Deliverable JRA1.1: Evaluation of current network control and management planes for multi-domain network infrastructure
This deliverable includes a compilation and evaluation of available control and management architectures and protocols applicable to a multilayer infrastructure in a multi-domain Virtual Network environment.The scope of this deliverable is mainly focused on the virtualisation of the resources within a network and at processing nodes. The virtualization of the FEDERICA infrastructure allows the provisioning of its available resources to users by means of FEDERICA slices. A slice is seen by the user as a real physical network under his/her domain, however it maps to a logical partition (a virtual instance) of the physical FEDERICA resources. A slice is built to exhibit to the highest degree all the principles applicable to a physical network (isolation, reproducibility, manageability, ...). Currently, there are no standard definitions available for network virtualization or its associated architectures. Therefore, this deliverable proposes the Virtual Network layer architecture and evaluates a set of Management- and Control Planes that can be used for the partitioning and virtualization of the FEDERICA network resources. This evaluation has been performed taking into account an initial set of FEDERICA requirements; a possible extension of the selected tools will be evaluated in future deliverables. The studies described in this deliverable define the virtual architecture of the FEDERICA infrastructure. During this activity, the need has been recognised to establish a new set of basic definitions (taxonomy) for the building blocks that compose the so-called slice, i.e. the virtual network instantiation (which is virtual with regard to the abstracted view made of the building blocks of the FEDERICA infrastructure) and its architectural plane representation. These definitions will be established as a common nomenclature for the FEDERICA project. Other important aspects when defining a new architecture are the user requirements. It is crucial that the resulting architecture fits the demands that users may have. Since this deliverable has been produced at the same time as the contact process with users, made by the project activities related to the Use Case definitions, JRA1 has proposed a set of basic Use Cases to be considered as starting point for its internal studies. When researchers want to experiment with their developments, they need not only network resources on their slices, but also a slice of the processing resources. These processing slice resources are understood as virtual machine instances that users can use to make them behave as software routers or end nodes, on which to download the software protocols or applications they have produced and want to assess in a realistic environment. Hence, this deliverable also studies the APIs of several virtual machine management software products in order to identify which best suits FEDERICA’s needs.Postprint (published version
Institutions, Social Capital, and Economic Development in Africa: An Empirical Study.
Using 1975-2000 panel data, this paper examines the effects of institutions and social capital, in the form of generalized trust (proxied by contract-intensive money), on economic development in 39 African countries. The results indicate that there is a robust positive influence of social capital on income. In addition, the interaction between social capital and institutional quality, and the interaction of social capital with human capital also have a positive influence on economic development. On the other hand, institutions do not seem to have an independent effect (or may even have a negative impact) on income. Overall, the empirical results suggest that social capital and institutions in Africa may be complements rather than substitutes.

Novel information and data exchange within power systems using enhanced blockchain technologies
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonCurrent energy systems are primarily designed for centralized power generation and supplying bulk electricity to users with stable and predictable usage patterns. However, with the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES), future energy systems will require greater flexibility and wider distribution of both demand and supply. Integrating RES on a large scale poses challenges to the hosting capacity of distribution systems. To address these challenges, the digitalization of energy systems through novel Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) infrastructure is essential. The shift from centralized to highly distributed systems necessitates increased coordination and communication efforts. This is because a distributed system is composed of multiple independent entities that need to communicate and collaborate effectively to accomplish a shared objective. Coordination and communication are necessary to ensure that the system is operating efficiently and effectively.
Traditional centralized cloud-based data exchange schemes depend on a single trusted third party, this may lead to single-point failure and lack of data privacy and access control. To overcome these issues, a novel approach is proposed for exchanging data within power systems using blockchain technology. This approach enables users to securely exchange data while maintaining ownership. The experiments conducted demonstrate that the proposed approach can handle more users and enables information and data exchange within power systems.
Secondly, this thesis proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based prediction model to optimize the performance of the blockchain-enabled data exchange approach. A use case for exchanging data within the power system is implemented on the proposed platform using various performance metrics. The results of the proposed approach are compared to two other schemes: the baseline scheme and an optimized scheme. The evaluation results indicate that the proposed approach can enhance network performance when compared to the baseline and optimized schemes.
In summary, the proposed novel approach to ICT infrastructure for successfully exchanging information and data within power systems entities. The performance of the novel approach is evaluated based on the ability to handle multiple users, scalability, reliability, and security
