Performance Analysis and Enhancement of Multiband OFDM for UWB Communications
In this paper, we analyze the frequency-hopping orthogonal frequency-division
multiplexing (OFDM) system known as Multiband OFDM for high-rate wireless
personal area networks (WPANs) based on ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission.
Besides considering the standard, we also propose and study system performance
enhancements through the application of Turbo and Repeat-Accumulate (RA) codes,
as well as OFDM bit-loading. Our methodology consists of (a) a study of the
channel model developed under IEEE 802.15 for UWB from a frequency-domain
perspective suited for OFDM transmission, (b) development and quantification of
appropriate information-theoretic performance measures, (c) comparison of these
measures with simulation results for the Multiband OFDM standard proposal as
well as our proposed extensions, and (d) the consideration of the influence of
practical, imperfect channel estimation on the performance. We find that the
current Multiband OFDM standard sufficiently exploits the frequency selectivity
of the UWB channel, and that the system performs in the vicinity of the channel
cutoff rate. Turbo codes and a reduced-complexity clustered bit-loading
algorithm improve the system power efficiency by over 6 dB at a data rate of
480 Mbps.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. Submitted to the IEEE Transactions on

On Optimal Turbo Decoding of Wideband MIMO-OFDM Systems Under Imperfect Channel State Information
We consider the decoding of bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) applied
to both multiband and MIMO OFDM systems for typical scenarios where only a
noisy (possibly very bad) estimate of the channel is provided by sending a
limited number of pilot symbols. First, by using a Bayesian framework involving
the channel a posteriori density, we adopt a practical decoding metric that is
robust to the presence of channel estimation errors. Then this metric is used
in the demapping part of BICM multiband and MIMO OFDM receivers. We also
compare our results with the performance of a mismatched decoder that replaces
the channel by its estimate in the decoding metric. Numerical results over both
realistic UWB and theoretical Rayleigh fading channels show that the proposed
method provides significant gain in terms of bit error rate compared to the
classical mismatched detector, without introducing any additional complexity
Performance of MB-OFDM UWB and WiMAX IEEE 802.16e converged radio-over-fiber in PON
Experimental results about the performance of converged radio-over- fiber transmission including multiband- OFDM UWB and WiMAX 802.16e wireless over a passive optical network are reported in this paper. The experimental study indicates that UWB and WiMAX converged transmission is feasible over the proposed distribution set-up employing a single wavelength. However, the results indicate that there is an EVM penalty of 3.2 dB for a UWB 10 km SSMF transmission in presence of WiMAX wireless
Error Rate Analysis for Coded Multicarrier Systems over Quasi-Static Fading Channels
This paper presents two methods for approximating the performance of coded
multicarrier systems operating over frequency-selective, quasi-static fading
channels with non-ideal interleaving. The first method is based on
approximating the performance of the system over each realization of the
channel, and is suitable for obtaining the outage performance of this type of
system. The second method is based on knowledge of the correlation matrix of
the frequency-domain channel gains and can be used to directly obtain the
average performance. Both of the methods are applicable for
convolutionally-coded interleaved systems employing Quadrature Amplitude
Modulation (QAM). As examples, both methods are used to study the performance
of the Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) proposal for
high data-rate Ultra-Wideband (UWB) communication.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Submitted to Globecom 200
Cross-layer Resource Allocation Scheme for Multi-band High Rate UWB Systems
In this paper, we investigate the use of a cross-layer allocation mechanism
for the high-rate ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The aim of this paper is
twofold. First, through the cross-layer approach that provides a new service
differentiation approach to the fully distributed UWB systems, we support
traffic with quality of service (QoS) guarantee in a multi-user context.
Second, we exploit the effective SINR method that represents the
characteristics of multiple sub-carrier SINRs in the multi-band WiMedia
solution proposed for UWB systems, in order to provide the channel state
information needed for the multi-user sub-band allocation. This new approach
improves the system performance and optimizes the spectrum utilization with a
low cost data exchange between the different users while guaranteeing the
required QoS. In addition, this new approach solves the problem of the
cohabitation of more than three users in the same WiMedia channel
Spectrum control and iterative coding for high capacity multiband OFDM
The emergence of Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (MB-OFDM) as an ultra-wideband (UWB) technology injected new optimism in the market through realistic commercial implementation, while keeping promise of high data rates intact. However, it has also brought with it host of issues, some of which are addressed in this thesis.
The thesis primarily focuses on the two issues of spectrum control and user capacity for the system currently proposed by the Multiband OFDM Alliance (MBOA). By showing that line spectra are still an issue for new modulation scheme (MB-OFDM), it proposes a mechanism of scrambling the data with an increased length linear feedback shift register (compared to the current proposal), a new set of seeds, and random phase reversion for the removal of line spectra. Following this, the thesis considers a technique for increasing the user capacity of the current MB-OFDM system to meet the needs of future wireless systems, through an adaptive multiuser synchronous coded transmission scheme. This involves real time iterative generation of user codes, which are generated over time and frequency leading to increased capacity. With the assumption of complete channel state information (CSI) at the receiver, an iterative MMSE algorithm is used which involves replacement of each users s signature with its normalized MMSE filter function allowing the overall Total Squared Correlation (TSC) of the system to decrease until the algorithm converges to a fixed set of signature vectors. This allows the system to be overloaded and user\u27s codes to be quasi-orthogonal. Simulation results show that for code of length nine (spread over three frequency bands and three time slots), ten users can be accommodated for a given QoS and with addition of single frequency sub-band which allows the code length to increase from nine to twelve (four frequency sub-bands and three time slots), fourteen users with nearly same QoS can be accommodated in the system. This communication is overlooked by a central controller with necessary functionalities to facilitate the process. The thesis essentially considers the uplink from transmitting devices to this central controller. Furthermore, analysis of this coded transmission in presence of interference is carried to display the robustness of this scheme through its adaptation by incorporating knowledge of existing Narrowband (NB) Interference for computing the codes. This allows operation of sub-band coexisting with NB interference without substantial degradation given reasonable interference energy (SIR=-l0dB and -5dB considered). Finally, the thesis looks at design implementation and convergence issues related to code vector generation whereby, use of Lanczos algorithm is considered for simpler design and faster convergence. The algorithm can be either used to simplify design implementation by providing simplified solution to Weiner Hopf equation (without requiring inverse of correlation matrix) over Krylov subspace or can be used to expedite convergence by updating the signature sequence with eigenvector corresponding to the least eigenvalue of the signature correlation matrix through reduced rank eigen subspace search
Frequency Diversity Performance of Coded Multiband-OFDM Systems on IEEE UWB Channels
This paper investigates how convolutional and Reed-Solomon codes can be used to improve the performance of multiband-OFDM by utilizing the inherent frequency diversity of the new IEEE 802.15 UWB channel models. A normalized amplitude autocovariance function of the Fourier transform of the channel impulse response is defined. Then the average coherence bandwidths of CM1, CM2, CM3, and CM4 are estimated to be 31.6, 16.3, 11.0, 5.8 MHz, respectively. Using the central limit theorem, we can expect that the performance of an uncoded OFDM system on CM1-CM4 without shadowing is the same as in a Rayleigh fading channel with uniformly distributed phase. The performance of a convolutional code with rate 1/2 and constraint length 7 on CM2-CM4 without shadowing are up to 0.4 dB worse than that of on an uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channel. The loss for CM1 is around 1 dB. A block interleaver with 32 rows and 24 columns was used. This result is also valid for a convolutional code with rate 1/4 and constraint length 7. For code rates around 2/3, the performance of a punctured convolutional code with soft-decision decoding is much better than that of the Reed-Solomon codes with with 6, 7, and 8 bits per symbol and hard-decision decoding
Multiband OFDM for Cognitive Radio – A Way for Cyclostationary Detection and Interference Cancellation
With the tremendous growth in wireless technology there has been a shortage in the spectrum utilized for certain applications while some spectrum remains idle. To overcome this problem and for the efficient utilization of the spectrum cognitive radio is the suitable solution.Multiband OFDM can be easily modeled as cognitive radio, a technology that is employed for utilizing the available spectrum in the most efficient way. Since sensing of the free spectrum for detecting the arrival of the primary users is the foremost job of cognitive, here cyclostationary based spectrum sensing is carried out. Its performance is investigated using universal software defined radio peripheral (USRP) kit which is the hardware test bed for the cognitive radio system. Results are shown using Labview software. Further to mitigate the interference between the primary and cognitive users a modified intrusion elimination (AIC) algorithm had been proposed which in turn ensures the coexistence of both the users in the same wireless environment
