Applications of satellite technology to broadband ISDN networks
Two satellite architectures for delivering broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) service are evaluated. The first is assumed integral to an existing terrestrial network, and provides complementary services such as interconnects to remote nodes as well as high-rate multicast and broadcast service. The interconnects are at a 155 Mbs rate and are shown as being met with a nonregenerative multibeam satellite having 10-1.5 degree spots. The second satellite architecture focuses on providing private B-ISDN networks as well as acting as a gateway to the public network. This is conceived as being provided by a regenerative multibeam satellite with on-board ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) processing payload. With up to 800 Mbs offered, higher satellite EIRP is required. This is accomplished with 12-0.4 degree hopping beams, covering a total of 110 dwell positions. It is estimated the space segment capital cost for architecture one would be about 250M. The net user cost is given for a variety of scenarios, but the cost for 155 Mbs services is shown to be about $15-22/minute for 25 percent system utilization
Enabling Work-conserving Bandwidth Guarantees for Multi-tenant Datacenters via Dynamic Tenant-Queue Binding
Today's cloud networks are shared among many tenants. Bandwidth guarantees
and work conservation are two key properties to ensure predictable performance
for tenant applications and high network utilization for providers. Despite
significant efforts, very little prior work can really achieve both properties
simultaneously even some of them claimed so.
In this paper, we present QShare, an in-network based solution to achieve
bandwidth guarantees and work conservation simultaneously. QShare leverages
weighted fair queuing on commodity switches to slice network bandwidth for
tenants, and solves the challenge of queue scarcity through balanced tenant
placement and dynamic tenant-queue binding. QShare is readily implementable
with existing switching chips. We have implemented a QShare prototype and
evaluated it via both testbed experiments and simulations. Our results show
that QShare ensures bandwidth guarantees while driving network utilization to
over 91% even under unpredictable traffic demands.Comment: The initial work is published in IEEE INFOCOM 201
Radio Spectrum and the Disruptive Clarity OF Ronald Coase.
In the Federal Communications Commission, Ronald Coase (1959) exposed deep foundations via normative argument buttressed by astute historical observation. The government controlled scarce frequencies, issuing sharply limited use rights. Spillovers were said to be otherwise endemic. Coase saw that Government limited conflicts by restricting uses; property owners perform an analogous function via the "price system." The government solution was inefficient unless the net benefits of the alternative property regime were lower. Coase augured that the price system would outperform the administrative allocation system. His spectrum auction proposal was mocked by communications policy experts, opposed by industry interests, and ridiculed by policy makers. Hence, it took until July 25, 1994 for FCC license sales to commence. Today, some 73 U.S. auctions have been held, 27,484 licenses sold, and 17 billion in U.S. welfare losses have been averted. Not bad for the first 50 years of this, or any, Article appearing in Volume II of the Journal of Law & Economics.
Dimensionerings- en werkverdelingsalgoritmen voor lambda grids
Grids bestaan uit een verzameling reken- en opslagelementen die geografisch verspreid kunnen zijn, maar waarvan men de gezamenlijke capaciteit wenst te benutten. Daartoe dienen deze elementen verbonden te worden met een netwerk. Vermits veel wetenschappelijke applicaties gebruik maken van een Grid, en deze applicaties doorgaans grote hoeveelheden data verwerken, is het noodzakelijk om een netwerk te voorzien dat dergelijke grote datastromen op betrouwbare wijze kan transporteren. Optische transportnetwerken lenen zich hier uitstekend toe. Grids die gebruik maken van dergelijk netwerk noemt men lambda Grids. Deze thesis beschrijft een kader waarin het ontwerp en dimensionering van optische netwerken voor lambda Grids kunnen beschreven worden. Ook wordt besproken hoe werklast kan verdeeld worden op een Grid eens die gedimensioneerd is. Een groot deel van de resultaten werd bekomen door simulatie, waarbij gebruik gemaakt wordt van een eigen Grid simulatiepakket dat precies focust op netwerk- en Gridelementen. Het ontwerp van deze simulator, en de daarbijhorende implementatiekeuzes worden dan ook uitvoerig toegelicht in dit werk

Dynamic Scaling for Service Oriented Applications: Implications of Virtual Machine Placement on IaaS Clouds
Abstraction of physical hardware using infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) clouds leads to the simplistic view that resources are homogeneous and that infinite scaling is possible with linear increases in performance. Support for autonomic scaling of multi-tier service oriented applications requires determination of when, what, and where to scale. \u27When\u27 is addressed by hotspot detection schemes using techniques including performance modeling and time series analysis. \u27What\u27 relates to determining the quantity and size of new resources to provision. \u27Where\u27 involves identification of the best location(s) to provision new resources. In this paper we investigate primarily \u27where\u27 new infrastructure should be provisioned, and secondly \u27what\u27 the infrastructure should be. Dynamic scaling of infrastructure for service oriented applications requires rapid response to changes in demand to meet application quality-of-service requirements. We investigate the performance and resource cost implications of VM placement when dynamically scaling server infrastructure of service oriented applications . We evaluate dynamic scaling in the context of providing modeling-as-a-service for two environmental science models
