    Performance Characterization of a Wireless Instrumentation Bus

    The architecture and operation of a wireless instrumentation bus based on the Bluetooth standard are presented together with a detailed characterization. The bus, via suitable wireless interface boards, allows measurement instruments equipped with standard RS232, IEEE488, universal serial bus, and local area network interface ports to be simply connected within the wireless area without any firmware modification. In addition, a comparison with traditional wired interface buses is carried out in terms of communication reliability and throughput with reference to some basic operating modes. Finally, the results of distance tests and a detailed evaluation of power consumption for each wireless interface module are reported. This will enable measurement system designers to evaluate the convenience of the solution for their application requirements

    A Wireless Sensor Network for Cold-Chain Monitoring

    This paper deals with a wireless sensor network that was specifically designed to monitor temperature-sensitive products during their distribution with the aim of conforming to the cold-chain assurance requirements. The measurement problems and the constraints that have been encountered in this application are initially highlighted, and then, an architecture that takes such problems into account is proposed. The proposed architecture is based on specifically designed measuring nodes that are inserted into the products to identify their behavior under real operating conditions, e.g., during a typical distribution. Such product nodes communicate through a wireless channel with a base station, which collects and processes the data sent by all the nodes. A peculiarity of the product nodes is the low cost, which allows the information on the cold-chain integrity to be provided to the final customer.     A wireless instrumentation control system based on low-cost single board computer gateways

    Nowadays, most of the automatized measurement processes are carried out by VISA (Virtual Instrument Software Architecture) compatible instruments, that execute the instructions provided by a host computer connected through wired standard buses, as USB (Universal Serial Bus), GPIB (General-Purpose Instrumentation Bus), PXI (PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation) or Ethernet. To overcome the intrinsic limitations associated to these wired systems, this work presents an instrumentation control system based on the IEEE 802.11 wireless communications standard. Intended for instruments having a USB control port, this port is connected to a gateway based on a compact Raspberry Single Board Computer (SBC) and thus the instrument can be connected to the host computer via Wireless Fidelity (WiFi), easily allowing the deployment of an ad-hoc instruments communication network in the working area or its connection to a previously deployed general purpose WiFi network. Developed under Python, the operation commands, wireless link protocol, and USB connection allow two modes of operation to provide system flexibility: a live mode, where commands are sent individually from the host computer to the selected instrument; and a standalone mode, where a full measurement process can be entirely downloaded in the gateway to be autonomously executed on the instrumentation.     Contactless measurement of electric current using magnetic sensors

    We review recent advances in magnetic sensors for DC/AC current transducers, especially novel AMR sensors and integrated fluxgates, and we make critical comparison of their properties. Most contactless electric current transducers use magnetic cores to concentrate the flux generated by the measured current and to shield the sensor against external magnetic fields. In order to achieve this, the magnetic core should be massive. We present coreless current transducers which are lightweight, linear and free of hysteresis and remanence. We also show how to suppress their weak point: crosstalk from external currents and magnetic fields

    A system-on-chip digital pH meter for use in a wireless diagnostic capsule

    This paper describes the design and implementation of a system-on-chip digital pH meter, for use in a wireless capsule application. The system is organized around an 8-bit microcontroller, designed to be functionally identical to the Motorola 6805. The analog subsystem contains a floating-electrode ISFET, which is fully compatible with a commercial CMOS process. On-chip programmable voltage references and multiplexors permit flexibility with the minimum of external connections. The chip is designed in a modular fashion to facilitate verification and component re-use. The single-chip pH meter can be directly connected to a personal computer, and gives a response of 37 bits/pH, within an operating range of 7 pH units

    Low-Cost Visual Sensor Node for BlueTooth-Based Measurement Networks

    This paper proposes a wireless visual sensor comprising of a low-cost grayscale camera as the sensing hardware and a BlueTooth (BT) 100-m slave module as the transmission hardware. The latter enables the sensor to be inserted as a node in a medium-range BT measurement network. The proposed sensor, which is designed to satisfy precise specifications in terms of image-transfer rate and power consumption, represents a good image-acquisition solution in a wide range of applications where hardwiring between camera and image processor is undesired. This paper describes the hardware used and the overall operating principle behind the sensor, discusses the sensor-node performance, and reports the results of reliability tests
