Realtime Multilevel Crowd Tracking using Reciprocal Velocity Obstacles
We present a novel, realtime algorithm to compute the trajectory of each
pedestrian in moderately dense crowd scenes. Our formulation is based on an
adaptive particle filtering scheme that uses a multi-agent motion model based
on velocity-obstacles, and takes into account local interactions as well as
physical and personal constraints of each pedestrian. Our method dynamically
changes the number of particles allocated to each pedestrian based on different
confidence metrics. Additionally, we use a new high-definition crowd video
dataset, which is used to evaluate the performance of different pedestrian
tracking algorithms. This dataset consists of videos of indoor and outdoor
scenes, recorded at different locations with 30-80 pedestrians. We highlight
the performance benefits of our algorithm over prior techniques using this
dataset. In practice, our algorithm can compute trajectories of tens of
pedestrians on a multi-core desktop CPU at interactive rates (27-30 frames per
second). To the best of our knowledge, our approach is 4-5 times faster than
prior methods, which provide similar accuracy
LCrowdV: Generating Labeled Videos for Simulation-based Crowd Behavior Learning
We present a novel procedural framework to generate an arbitrary number of
labeled crowd videos (LCrowdV). The resulting crowd video datasets are used to
design accurate algorithms or training models for crowded scene understanding.
Our overall approach is composed of two components: a procedural simulation
framework for generating crowd movements and behaviors, and a procedural
rendering framework to generate different videos or images. Each video or image
is automatically labeled based on the environment, number of pedestrians,
density, behavior, flow, lighting conditions, viewpoint, noise, etc.
Furthermore, we can increase the realism by combining synthetically-generated
behaviors with real-world background videos. We demonstrate the benefits of
LCrowdV over prior lableled crowd datasets by improving the accuracy of
pedestrian detection and crowd behavior classification algorithms. LCrowdV

Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe
DroTrack: High-speed Drone-based Object Tracking Under Uncertainty
We present DroTrack, a high-speed visual single-object tracking framework for
drone-captured video sequences. Most of the existing object tracking methods
are designed to tackle well-known challenges, such as occlusion and cluttered
backgrounds. The complex motion of drones, i.e., multiple degrees of freedom in
three-dimensional space, causes high uncertainty. The uncertainty problem leads
to inaccurate location predictions and fuzziness in scale estimations. DroTrack
solves such issues by discovering the dependency between object representation
and motion geometry. We implement an effective object segmentation based on
Fuzzy C Means (FCM). We incorporate the spatial information into the membership
function to cluster the most discriminative segments. We then enhance the
object segmentation by using a pre-trained Convolution Neural Network (CNN)
model. DroTrack also leverages the geometrical angular motion to estimate a
reliable object scale. We discuss the experimental results and performance
evaluation using two datasets of 51,462 drone-captured frames. The combination
of the FCM segmentation and the angular scaling increased DroTrack precision by
up to and decreased the centre location error by pixels on average.
DroTrack outperforms all the high-speed trackers and achieves comparable
results in comparison to deep learning trackers. DroTrack offers high frame
rates up to 1000 frame per second (fps) with the best location precision, more

Tracking interacting targets in multi-modal sensors
PhDObject tracking is one of the fundamental tasks in various applications such as surveillance,
sports, video conferencing and activity recognition. Factors such as occlusions,
illumination changes and limited field of observance of the sensor make tracking a challenging
task. To overcome these challenges the focus of this thesis is on using multiple
modalities such as audio and video for multi-target, multi-modal tracking. Particularly,
this thesis presents contributions to four related research topics, namely, pre-processing of
input signals to reduce noise, multi-modal tracking, simultaneous detection and tracking,
and interaction recognition.
To improve the performance of detection algorithms, especially in the presence
of noise, this thesis investigate filtering of the input data through spatio-temporal feature
analysis as well as through frequency band analysis. The pre-processed data from multiple
modalities is then fused within Particle filtering (PF). To further minimise the discrepancy
between the real and the estimated positions, we propose a strategy that associates the
hypotheses and the measurements with a real target, using a Weighted Probabilistic Data
Association (WPDA). Since the filtering involved in the detection process reduces the
available information and is inapplicable on low signal-to-noise ratio data, we investigate
simultaneous detection and tracking approaches and propose a multi-target track-beforedetect
Particle filtering (MT-TBD-PF). The proposed MT-TBD-PF algorithm bypasses
the detection step and performs tracking in the raw signal. Finally, we apply the proposed
multi-modal tracking to recognise interactions between targets in regions within, as well
as outside the cameras’ fields of view.
The efficiency of the proposed approaches are demonstrated on large uni-modal,
multi-modal and multi-sensor scenarios from real world detections, tracking and event
recognition datasets and through participation in evaluation campaigns
Robust Multi-Person Tracking from Moving Platforms
In this paper, we address the problem of multi-person tracking in busy pedestrian
zones, using a stereo rig mounted on a mobile platform. The
complexity of the problem calls for an integrated solution, which
extracts as much visual information as possible and combines it
through cognitive feedback. We propose such an approach, which
jointly estimates camera position, stereo depth, object detection,
and tracking. We model the interplay between these components
using a graphical model. Since the model has to
incorporate object-object interactions, and temporal links to past
frames, direct inference is intractable. We therefore propose a two-stage
procedure: for each frame we first solve a simplified version of the
model (disregarding interactions and temporal continuity) to
estimate the scene geometry and an overcomplete set of object
detections. Conditioned on these results, we then address object
interactions, tracking, and prediction in a second step. The
approach is experimentally evaluated on several long and difficult
video sequences from busy inner-city locations. Our results show
that the proposed integration makes it possible to deliver stable
tracking performance in scenes of realistic complexity
