    Pearson Codes

The Pearson distance has been advocated for improving the error performance of noisy channels with unknown gain and offset. The Pearson distance can only fruitfully be used for sets of qq-ary codewords, called Pearson codes, that satisfy specific properties. We will analyze constructions and properties of optimal Pearson codes. We will compare the redundancy of optimal Pearson codes with the redundancy of prior art TT-constrained codes, which consist of qq-ary sequences in which TT pre-determined reference symbols appear at least once. In particular, it will be shown that for q≤3q\le 3 the 22-constrained codes are optimal Pearson codes, while for q≥4q\ge 4 these codes are not optimal.Comment: 17 pages. Binary Cyclic Pearson Codes

The phenomena of unknown gain or offset on communication systems and modern storages such as optical data storage and non-volatile memory (flash) becomes a serious problem. This problem can be handled by Pearson distance applied to the detector because it offers immunity to gain and offset mismatch. This distance can only be used for a specific set of codewords, called Pearson codes. An interesting example of Pearson code can be found in T-constrained code class. In this paper, we present binary 2-constrained codes with cyclic property. The construction of this code is adopted from cyclic codes, but it cannot be considered as cyclic codes.

ASSESSMENT OF MOUSE EMBRYO VIABILITY BY ESTERASIC ACTIVITY DETECTION

In order to evaluate the esterasic activity within the viable embryos we used the Fluorescein diacetate(FDA) staining test. For staining was used a 0.5 mg/ml FDA stock solution. The embryos were recoveredat 48 hours post coitus from superovulated Swiss mouse females. Before staining the embryos weremicroscopically evaluated by morphological criteria and classified in 4 quality codes. The two methodsused for quality and viability assessment were correlated applying Pearson coefficient. The calculatedvalue of the Pearson coefficient (r=1) showed a strong correlation between the two methods used andindicate FDA staining test and esterasic activity as a fast, easy and reliable method for embryo viabilityassessment

Knowledge and Performance about Nursing Ethic Codes from Nurses' and Patients' Perspective in Tabriz Teaching Hospitals, Iran

Introduction: Nursing profession requires knowledge of ethics to guide performance. The nature of this profession necessitates ethical care more than routine care. Today, worldwide definition of professional ethic code has been done based on human and ethical issues in the communication between nurse and patient. To improve all dimensions of nursing, we need to respect ethic codes. The aim of this study is to assess knowledge and performance about nursing ethic codes from nurses' and patients' perspective. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative study Conducted upon 345 nurses and 500 inpatients in six teaching hospitals of Tabriz, 2012. To investigate nurses' knowledge and performance, data were collected by using structured questionnaires. Statistical analysis was done using descriptive and analytic statistics, independent t-test and ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient, in SPSS13.Results: Most of the nurses were female, married, educated at BS degree and 86.4% of them were aware of Ethic codes also 91.9% of nurses and 41.8% of patients represented nurses respect ethic codes. Nurses' and patients' perspective about ethic codes differed significantly. Significant relationship was found between nurses' knowledge of ethic codes and job satisfaction and complaint of ethical performance. Conclusion: According to the results, consideration to teaching ethic codes in nursing curriculum for student and continuous education for staff is proposed, on the other hand recognizing failures of the health system, optimizing nursing care, attempt to inform patients about Nursing ethic codes, promote patient rights and achieve patient satisfaction can minimize the differences between the two perspectives

TROM: A Testing-based Method for Finding Transcriptomic Similarity of Biological Samples

Comparative transcriptomics has gained increasing popularity in genomic research thanks to the development of high-throughput technologies including microarray and next-generation RNA sequencing that have generated numerous transcriptomic data. An important question is to understand the conservation and differentiation of biological processes in different species. We propose a testing-based method TROM (Transcriptome Overlap Measure) for comparing transcriptomes within or between different species, and provide a different perspective to interpret transcriptomic similarity in contrast to traditional correlation analyses. Specifically, the TROM method focuses on identifying associated genes that capture molecular characteristics of biological samples, and subsequently comparing the biological samples by testing the overlap of their associated genes. We use simulation and real data studies to demonstrate that TROM is more powerful in identifying similar transcriptomes and more robust to stochastic gene expression noise than Pearson and Spearman correlations. We apply TROM to compare the developmental stages of six Drosophila species, C. elegans, S. purpuratus, D. rerio and mouse liver, and find interesting correspondence patterns that imply conserved gene expression programs in the development of these species. The TROM method is available as an R package on CRAN (http://cran.r-project.org/) with manuals and source codes available at http://www.stat.ucla.edu/ jingyi.li/software-and-data/trom.html
