Modeling Illegal Logging in Brazil
Deforestation is a major threat to global environmental wellness, with illegal logging as one of the major causes. Recently, there has been increased effort to model environmental crime, with the goal of assisting law enforcement agencies in deterring these activities. We present a continuous model for illegal logging applicable to arbitrary domains. We model the practice of criminals under influence of law enforcement agencies using tools from multiobjective optimal control theory and consider non-instantaneous logging events and load-dependent travel velocity. We calibrate our model using real deforestation data from the Brazilian rainforest and demonstrate the importance of geographically targeted patrol strategies

Models for Human Navigation and Optimal Path Planning Using Level Set Methods and Hamilton-Jacobi Equations
We present several models for different physical scenarios which are centered around human movement or optimal path planning, and use partial differential equations and concepts from control theory. The first model is a game-theoretic model for environmental crime which tracks criminals' movement using the level set method, and improves upon previous continuous models by removing overly restrictive assumptions of symmetry. Next, we design a method for determining optimal hiking paths in mountainous regions using an anisotropic level set equation. After this, we present a model for optimal human navigation with uncertainty which is rooted in dynamic programming and stochastic optimal control theory. Lastly, we consider optimal path planning for simple, self-driving cars in the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation. We improve upon previous models which simplify the car to a point mass, and present a reasonably general upwind, sweeping scheme to solve the relevant Hamilton-Jacobi equation

The Arctic Game
Since outsiders first visited the Arctic, they have believed in man\u27s ability to conquer the region. Today\u27s Arctic conquest is not one of heroic exploration, but rather one of ownership and exploitation. This paper illustrates contestation in the Arctic through the metaphor of a game, with attendant prizes, players, and rules. It focuses on how to prevent the future destruction of the Arctic given the interactions of the Arctic\u27s landscape, prizes, players, and current management frameworks. In the wake of renewed resource exploitation and escalating climate change impacts, the current frameworks and mindsets are inadequate to support the precarious balance of cooperation and competition in the region. The presence of an indigenous population is a defining characteristic of the Arctic landscape, requiring a change from traditional policy methods as an appropriate management tool. Turning toward leadership from northern indigenous populations and following the example of cooperation initiated by the natural science community may be the best way forward to prevent a dystopian future for the Arctic
A Comparative Tree Survey of Disturbed and Primary Forest Areas: Ngezi-Vumawimbi Nature Forest Reserve, Pemba Island
Off the coast of Tanzania, in East Africa, the island of Pemba was once covered in pristine forest despite having a small, agriculturally-based human population. Beginning around 1840, however, the island began to be deforested on a large scale for colonial plantations of cash crops such as cloves and rubber as well as for small-scale farms and firewood. Ngezi-Vumawimbi Nature Forest Reserve covers about 1,440 hectares and is all that remains of these once vast forests. The reserve was officially designated in 1957 but timber extraction and exploitation there continued until the late 1980s. In the early 1970s, a large section of the reserve was clear-cut and replanted with an exotic tree species that later was revealed to be extremely invasive. Extirpation efforts began in earnest a few decades later but no survey has been done since 2006 to determine the species composition of this section of the reserve. The purpose of this study is to perform a survey of trees in this disturbed area as well as in an adjacent primary forest area of the reserve and to use the collected data to evaluate regenerative progress in the forest. This summary and the subsequent recommendations will then be sent to the government of Zanzibar to aid in their decision making
