Retirement as integrational task In this article, the stance is taken that retirement can be viewed as a critical life phase. Depending on how retirees cope with this phase, they can either experience feelings of futility or engage in an optimal use of this promising period. The critical task of the retirement phase could therefore be outlined as achieving a deep sense of fulfillment and optimisation of lifeopportunities during the so-called golden years. This article will explore retirement as integrational task, the challenge being to guide retirees to an integration of life and faith experiences in order to experience meaning. A narrative approach to pastoral care is suggested as a mode for integration as it takes the generated experiences (stories) of people seriously. Within a reformational view of the narrative the Word of God is also taken seriously. In this fusion between the Story of God and man’s story lies the integration which will result in the creation of meaning during the final stage of man’s journey through life

This article focuses on developing a theory of ministry praxis that moves from uniform practices to the reflecting of diversity in a time of paradigm shift to the postmodern paradigm. Attention is paid to the ministry practices of the reformed tradition. A hermeneutic communicative ecclesiology of ministerial practices is used to describe the transfer from a single praxis to missionary ministry. The markers for this ecclesiology consist of Scripture metaphors referring to the church’s identity, her spiritual growth and her service in the Kingdom of God. In addition, these markers function on three levels: First, the level of God as the origin of the church; Secondly, the level of the church that recreates community with God through a life of gratitude and spiritual disciplines in the context of a family while functioning as a body of Christ; Thirdly, the level of the church’s relationship with God to the world by means of worship, gift-based ministry and testimony. (Article text in Afrikaans

Abstract Pastoral care for war exiles: the work of Petrus Postma in Ceylon Petrus Postma rendered esteemed and valuable work as pastor during the Anglo-Boer War in the Diyatalawa Camp in Ceylon. He was the son of the first pastor and first professor of theology of the Reformed Churches in South Africa, Dirk Postma. He was the pastor of the Reformed Church in Pretoria at the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War. President Paul Kruger was a member of this congregation and Postma’s association with him was apparently the reason why he was exiled to Ceylon. The war had a profound influence on Postma’s approach to pastoral care. This article intends to show how profound this influence was by looking at letters, minutes of church councils, war diaries and several other relevant sources. His pastoral care in the camp all but ceased after seven months when his wife arrived in Ceylon and he was granted parole to live elsewhere. The reason for this is explored.Petrus Postma rendered esteemed and valuable work as pastor during the Anglo-Boer War in the Diyatalawa Camp in Ceylon. Taking the final report of the HSRC’s exploratory study on family murder as a point of departure, the involvement of clergy and church regarding the phenomenon of family murder is discussed in this article. After highlighting some of the findings of the exploratory study, specific problematic aspects are addressed. The implications of the Christian message of hope to people in the situation of hopelessness, murder and suicide implicit in the phenomenon of family murder, are also evaluated. Likewise, the problematic relationship between the consequences of the gospel and the requirements for mental health is also touched upon. This relationship is looked at from the perspective of certain aspects of the empirical research done in this field. Furthermore, the possible supportive role of the church is stressed: this 'ecology of care’ and the church's message of hope ought to be functional in the situation of hopelessness accompanying family murder. In conclusion, certain preventative actions, in which the church may be instrumental, are pointed out

Called to work: A descriptive analysis of Call42’s research on faith and work in South Africa

Very little empirical research has been conducted into faith and work, particularly as it relates to the experience and expectations of Christians in the world of work in South Africa. This article discusses the most recent research of this kind that was conducted by Call42. Call42 conducted an empirical research project on faith, calling, and the world of work between 2011 and 2012. The findings were released to the public after July 2012. Not only is this the most up to date data on this subject at present; the research findings and research process are also worthy of academic consideration. The Call42 research was initiated and commissioned by a group of young Christian professionals (mainly engineers) and as such it brings a perspective on faith and work from within the primary context of the world of work, rather than the theological academy or the church. The findings of the research have implications for the church and its officers (priests, pastors and leaders). It also arrives at some conclusions for Christians in the world of work, students who are contemplating a vocation or career path, and companies and organisations that have an explicit or implicit Christian orientation

This research forms part of the Church's call for compassion and focus on that aspect of the ministry that is concerned with the welfare of the eighty plus elderly in particular. A qualitative study within a practical theological framework through in-depth interviews among the eighty plus elderly, religious leaders and nursing staff involved in eldercare, were conducted in Mossel Bay. Building relationships, conducting a meaningful and dignified existence, to be understood and unconditionally accepted, clearly emerged from the results. This research compels the congregation to rethink the aging process and how a holistic approach to eldercare can result in empathic pastoral support where the retired through empowerment programs receive the necessary skills to develop their ability to care for each other. In this article the characteristics of Aids are touched upon and then the (rather difficult) question whether Aids should be seen as God’s judgement over the sin (immorality) of man is discussed. Some typical aspects (sexual, medical, political and personal) are discussed and furthermore the line of argumentation is continued by elaborating on the calling of the church, the task of authorities and society as well as the responsibility of the family and the individual. The conclusion arrived at is that however serious the case of Aids may be, there is no room for pessimism, because Christians expect and await the full realisation of the kingdom of God This expectation does not nullify but maximises man’s responsibilty to fight Aids with all moral means at his disposal

AIDS is a fatal disease which is at present incurable. It is spread mainly through extra-marital heterosexual and homosexual intercourse. The distinctive feature of AIDS is that it destroys the immunity system of the human body. The victim subsequently dies of any common disease. At present AIDS is spreading extremely rapidly: world-wide, the number of people contracting the disease is doubled every ten months. The most important ways in which AIDS is contracted and spread, can be ascribed to sinful actions and ways of living, because these patterns of conduct are forbidden by God. Firstly, this means that if sexual intercourse were practised within lawful matrimony according to God's will, AIDS would not be a threat of any significance. Secondly, it means that people contracting AIDS through a promiscuous lifestyle, should see the disease as a punishment of God. In those instances where AIDS is contracted in other ways, it should be regarded as a sore trial. AIDS sufferers should not be stigmatised or ostracised, but should be actively supported and helped, especially by the churches. The way in which Christians behave towards sufferers of AIDS should reflect the compassion and charity of Christ towards sinners
