Bio-Inspired Robotics
Modern robotic technologies have enabled robots to operate in a variety of unstructured and dynamically-changing environments, in addition to traditional structured environments. Robots have, thus, become an important element in our everyday lives. One key approach to develop such intelligent and autonomous robots is to draw inspiration from biological systems. Biological structure, mechanisms, and underlying principles have the potential to provide new ideas to support the improvement of conventional robotic designs and control. Such biological principles usually originate from animal or even plant models, for robots, which can sense, think, walk, swim, crawl, jump or even fly. Thus, it is believed that these bio-inspired methods are becoming increasingly important in the face of complex applications. Bio-inspired robotics is leading to the study of innovative structures and computing with sensory–motor coordination and learning to achieve intelligence, flexibility, stability, and adaptation for emergent robotic applications, such as manipulation, learning, and control. This Special Issue invites original papers of innovative ideas and concepts, new discoveries and improvements, and novel applications and business models relevant to the selected topics of ``Bio-Inspired Robotics''. Bio-Inspired Robotics is a broad topic and an ongoing expanding field. This Special Issue collates 30 papers that address some of the important challenges and opportunities in this broad and expanding field
Combining omnidirectional vision with polarization vision for robot navigation
La polarisation est le phénomène qui décrit les orientations des oscillations des ondes lumineuses qui sont limitées en direction. La lumière polarisée est largement utilisée dans le règne animal,à partir de la recherche de nourriture, la défense et la communication et la navigation. Le chapitre (1) aborde brièvement certains aspects importants de la polarisation et explique notre problématique de recherche. Nous visons à utiliser un capteur polarimétrique-catadioptrique car il existe de nombreuses applications qui peuvent bénéficier d'une telle combinaison en vision par ordinateur et en robotique, en particulier pour l'estimation d'attitude et les applications de navigation. Le chapitre (2) couvre essentiellement l'état de l'art de l'estimation d'attitude basée sur la vision.Quand la lumière non-polarisée du soleil pénètre dans l'atmosphère, l'air entraine une diffusion de Rayleigh, et la lumière devient partiellement linéairement polarisée. Le chapitre (3) présente les motifs de polarisation de la lumière naturelle et couvre l'état de l'art des méthodes d'acquisition des motifs de polarisation de la lumière naturelle utilisant des capteurs omnidirectionnels (par exemple fisheye et capteurs catadioptriques). Nous expliquons également les caractéristiques de polarisation de la lumière naturelle et donnons une nouvelle dérivation théorique de son angle de polarisation.Notre objectif est d'obtenir une vue omnidirectionnelle à 360 associée aux caractéristiques de polarisation. Pour ce faire, ce travail est basé sur des capteurs catadioptriques qui sont composées de surfaces réfléchissantes et de lentilles. Généralement, la surface réfléchissante est métallique et donc l'état de polarisation de la lumière incidente, qui est le plus souvent partiellement linéairement polarisée, est modifiée pour être polarisée elliptiquement après réflexion. A partir de la mesure de l'état de polarisation de la lumière réfléchie, nous voulons obtenir l'état de polarisation incident. Le chapitre (4) propose une nouvelle méthode pour mesurer les paramètres de polarisation de la lumière en utilisant un capteur catadioptrique. La possibilité de mesurer le vecteur de Stokes du rayon incident est démontré à partir de trois composants du vecteur de Stokes du rayon réfléchi sur les quatre existants.Lorsque les motifs de polarisation incidents sont disponibles, les angles zénithal et azimutal du soleil peuvent être directement estimés à l'aide de ces modèles. Le chapitre (5) traite de l'orientation et de la navigation de robot basées sur la polarisation et différents algorithmes sont proposés pour estimer ces angles dans ce chapitre. A notre connaissance, l'angle zénithal du soleil est pour la première fois estimé dans ce travail à partir des schémas de polarisation incidents. Nous proposons également d'estimer l'orientation d'un véhicule à partir de ces motifs de polarisation.Enfin, le travail est conclu et les possibles perspectives de recherche sont discutées dans le chapitre (6). D'autres exemples de schémas de polarisation de la lumière naturelle, leur calibrage et des applications sont proposées en annexe (B).Notre travail pourrait ouvrir un accès au monde de la vision polarimétrique omnidirectionnelle en plus des approches conventionnelles. Polarized light has multiple uses in the animal kingdom ranging from foraging, defense and communication to orientation and navigation. Chapter (1) briefly covers some important aspects of polarization and explains our research problem. We are aiming to use a polarimetric-catadioptric sensor since there are many applications which can benefit from such combination in computer vision and robotics specially robot orientation (attitude estimation) and navigation applications. Chapter (2) mainly covers the state of art of visual based attitude estimation.As the unpolarized sunlight enters the Earth s atmosphere, it is Rayleigh-scattered by air, and it becomes partially linearly polarized. This skylight polarization provides a signi cant clue to understanding the environment. Its state conveys the information for obtaining the sun orientation. Robot navigation, sensor planning, and many other applications may bene t from using this navigation clue. Chapter (3) covers the state of art in capturing the skylight polarization patterns using omnidirectional sensors (e.g fisheye and catadioptric sensors). It also explains the skylight polarization characteristics and gives a new theoretical derivation of the skylight angle of polarization pattern. Our aim is to obtain an omnidirectional 360 view combined with polarization characteristics. Hence, this work is based on catadioptric sensors which are composed of reflective surfaces and lenses. Usually the reflective surface is metallic and hence the incident skylight polarization state, which is mostly partially linearly polarized, is changed to be elliptically polarized after reflection. Given the measured reflected polarization state, we want to obtain the incident polarization state. Chapter (4) proposes a method to measure the light polarization parameters using a catadioptric sensor. The possibility to measure the incident Stokes is proved given three Stokes out of the four reflected Stokes. Once the incident polarization patterns are available, the solar angles can be directly estimated using these patterns. Chapter (5) discusses polarization based robot orientation and navigation and proposes new algorithms to estimate these solar angles where, to the best of our knowledge, the sun zenith angle is firstly estimated in this work given these incident polarization patterns. We also propose to estimate any vehicle orientation given these polarization patterns. Finally the work is concluded and possible future research directions are discussed in chapter (6). More examples of skylight polarization patterns, their calibration, and the proposed applications are given in appendix (B). Our work may pave the way to move from the conventional polarization vision world to the omnidirectional one. It enables bio-inspired robot orientation and navigation applications and possible outdoor localization based on the skylight polarization patterns where given the solar angles at a certain date and instant of time may infer the current vehicle geographical location.DIJON-BU Doc.électronique (212319901) / SudocSudocFranceF
Functional Soft Robotic Actuators Based on Dielectric Elastomers
Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are a promising soft actuator technology for robotics. Adding robotic functionalities--folding, variable stiffness, and adhesion--into their actuator design is a novel method to create functionalized robots with simplified actuator configurations. We first propose a foldable actuator that has a simple antagonistic DEA configuration allowing bidirectional actuation and passive folding. To prove the concept, a foldable elevon actuator with outline size of 70 mm × 130 mm is developed with a performance specification matched to a 400 mm wingspan micro air vehicle (MAV) of mass 130 g. The developed actuator exhibits actuation angles up to ± 26 ° and a torque of 2720 mN·mm in good agreement with a prediction model. During a flight, two of these integrated elevon actuators well controlled the MAV, as proven by a strong correlation of 0.7 between the control signal and the MAV motion. We next propose a variable stiffness actuator consisting of a pre-stretched DEA bonded on a low-melting-point alloy (LMPA) embedded silicone substrate. The phase of the LMPA changes between liquid and solid enabling variable stiffness of the structure, between soft and rigid states, while the DEA generates a bending actuation. A proof-of-concept actuator with dimension 40 mm length × 10mm width × 1mm thickness and a mass of 1 g is fabricated and characterized. Actuation is observed up to 47.5 ° angle and yielding up to 2.4 mN of force in the soft state. The stiffness in the rigid state is ~90 × larger than an actuator without LMPA. We develop a two-finger gripper in which the actuators act as the fingers. The rigid state allows picking up an object mass of 11 g (108 mN), to be picked up even though the actuated grasping force is only 2.4 mN. We finally propose an electroadhesion actuator that has a DEA design simultaneously maximizing electroadhesion and electrostatic actuation, while allowing self-sensing by employing an interdigitated electrode geometry. The concept is validated through development of a two-finger soft gripper, and experimental samples are characterized to address an optimal design. We observe that the proposed DEA design generates 10 × larger electroadhesion force compared to a conventional DEA design, equating to a gripper with a high holding force (3.5 N shear force for 1 cm^2) yet a low grasping force (1 mN). These features make the developed simple gripper to handle a wide range of challenging objects such as highly-deformable water balloons (35.6 g), flat paper (0.8 g), and a raw chicken egg (60.9 g), with its lightweight (1.5 g) and fast movement (100 ms to close fingers). Towards UAV-assisted monitoring of onshore geological CO2 storage site
Scientists all over the world look for solutions to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to achieve proclaimed
emissions reduction targets. An intriguing candidate with the
potential to make a substantial contribution to this attempt is
carbon capture and storage (CCS). The key advantage of CCS is
that it provides the possibility to make a significant impact on
the reduction of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
from power plants and carbon-rich industry processes while
maintaining existing fossil fuel energy infrastructure. The
technique could therefore be used as a transitional solution
until fossil fuels can be eliminated from the energy generation
mix, and the energy efficiency of industrial processes as well as
appliances and products is further improved.
Like other technologies, CCS comes with its risks and rewards. To
minimize possible negative impacts on humans as well as on the
environment, it is necessary to understand the risks and to
address them accordingly. A range of monitoring solutions for
geological CO2 storage sites is available. However, a
cost-effective solution for the regular observation of
atmospheric CO2 concentrations (or tracer concentrations) of
large areas above onshore geological CO2 storage sites has yet to
be developed.
This thesis discusses the use of a helicopter unmanned aerial
vehicle (UAV) to fill this gap. The robot platform and its
autopilot are designed to cope with ongoing sensor developments
in addition to providing safety features necessary for the beyond
line-of-sight operation of the UAV. The design focuses on the use
of commercial off-the-shelf components for the aerial platform in
order to shorten the development time and to reduce costs. The
autopilot does neither enforce a specific helicopter model nor
defines a set position estimation unit to be used. Access to the
control loop enables low-level extensions like obstacle avoidance
to be implemented. The developed solution allows the monitoring
of an area of approximately 750m2 with one set of batteries in
one altitude with a spatial resolution of 2m by 2m. Experiments
show that point source leaks of as low as 100kg CO2 per day can
be detected and their source located.
As opposed to autonomous take-offs of the helicopter UAV,
autonomous landings on small dedicated helipads require an
accurate localization system. A time difference of arrival (TDOA)
based acoustic localization system which is based on planar
microphone arrays with at least four microphones is proposed. The
system can be embedded into the landing platform and provides the
accuracy necessary to land the UAV on a helipad of the size of 1m
by 1m. A review of existing TDOA-based approaches is given.
Simulations show that the developed approach outperforms its
direct competitors for the targeted task. Furthermore,
experimental results with the developed UAV confirm the
feasibility of the introduced method. The effects of the sensor
arrangement onto the quality of the calculated position estimates
are also discussed.
In order to combine robotic-assisted monitoring solutions and
other monitoring strategies (e.g. sensor networks and individual
sensors) into a single solution, it is necessary to have a
framework which allows next to the measurement data analysis also
the management (path changes, robot behavior changes, monitoring
of internal robot state) of possibly multiple heterogeneous
mobile robotic systems. A modular user interface (UI) framework
is proposed which allows robots from different vendors and with
various configurations next to individual sensors and sensor
networks to be managed from a single application. The software
system introduces a strict separation between the robot control
software and UIs. UI implementations inside the UI framework can
be reused across robot platforms, which can reduce the
integration time of new robots significantly. The end user
benefits by being able to manage a fleet of robots from various
vendors and being able to analyze all the measurement data
together in a single solution
Climbing and Walking Robots
With the advancement of technology, new exciting approaches enable us to render mobile robotic systems more versatile, robust and cost-efficient. Some researchers combine climbing and walking techniques with a modular approach, a reconfigurable approach, or a swarm approach to realize novel prototypes as flexible mobile robotic platforms featuring all necessary locomotion capabilities. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the latest wide-range achievements in climbing and walking robotic technology to researchers, scientists, and engineers throughout the world. Different aspects including control simulation, locomotion realization, methodology, and system integration are presented from the scientific and from the technical point of view. This book consists of two main parts, one dealing with walking robots, the second with climbing robots. The content is also grouped by theoretical research and applicative realization. Every chapter offers a considerable amount of interesting and useful information
Dynamic Modeling and Control of Spherical Robots
In this work, a rigorous framework is developed for the modeling and control of spherical robotic vehicles. Motivation for this work stems from the development of Moball, which is a self-propelled sensor platform that harvests kinetic energy from local wind fields. To study Moball's dynamics, the processes of Lagrangian reduction and reconstruction are extended to robotic systems with symmetry-breaking potential energies, in order to simplify the resulting dynamic equations and expose mathematical structures that play an important role in subsequent control-theoretic tasks. These results apply to robotic systems beyond spherical robots. A formulaic procedure is introduced to derive the reduced equations of motion of most spherical robots from inspection of the Lagrangian. This adaptable procedure is applied to a diverse set of robotic systems, including multirotor aerial vehicles.
Small time local controllability (STLC) results are derived for barycentric spherical robots (BSR), which are spherical vehicles whose locomotion depends on actuating the vehicle's center of mass (COM) location. STLC theorems are introduced for an arbitrary BSR on flat, sloped, or smooth terrain. I show that STLC depends on the surjectivity of a simple steering matrix. An STLC theorem is also derived for a class of commonly encountered multirotor vehicles.
Feedback linearizing and PID controllers are proposed to stabilize an arbitrary spherical robot to a desired trajectory over smooth terrain, and direct collocation is used to develop a feedforward controller for Moball specifically. Moball's COM is manipulated by a novel system of magnets and solenoids, which are actuated by a "ballistic-impulse" controller that is also presented. Lastly, a motion planner is developed for energy-harvesting vehicles. This planner charts a path over smooth terrain while balancing the desire to achieve scientific objectives, avoid hazards, and the imperative of exposing the vehicle to environmental sources of energy such as local wind fields and topology. Moball's design details and experimental results establishing Moball's energy-harvesting performance (7W while rolling at a speed of 2 m/s), are contained in an Appendix.</p
