Structured backward errors for eigenvalues of linear port-Hamiltonian descriptor systems
When computing the eigenstructure of matrix pencils associated with the
passivity analysis of perturbed port-Hamiltonian descriptor system using a
structured generalized eigenvalue method, one should make sure that the
computed spectrum satisfies the symmetries that corresponds to this structure
and the underlying physical system. We perform a backward error analysis and
show that for matrix pencils associated with port-Hamiltonian descriptor
systems and a given computed eigenstructure with the correct symmetry structure
there always exists a nearby port-Hamiltonian descriptor system with exactly
that eigenstructure. We also derive bounds for how near this system is and show
that the stability radius of the system plays a role in that bound
A Perturbation Scheme for Passivity Verification and Enforcement of Parameterized Macromodels
This paper presents an algorithm for checking and enforcing passivity of
behavioral reduced-order macromodels of LTI systems, whose frequency-domain
(scattering) responses depend on external parameters. Such models, which are
typically extracted from sampled input-output responses obtained from numerical
solution of first-principle physical models, usually expressed as Partial
Differential Equations, prove extremely useful in design flows, since they
allow optimization, what-if or sensitivity analyses, and design centering.
Starting from an implicit parameterization of both poles and residues of the
model, as resulting from well-known model identification schemes based on the
Generalized Sanathanan-Koerner iteration, we construct a parameter-dependent
Skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian matrix pencil. The iterative extraction of purely
imaginary eigenvalues ot fhe pencil, combined with an adaptive sampling scheme
in the parameter space, is able to identify all regions in the
frequency-parameter plane where local passivity violations occur. Then, a
singular value perturbation scheme is setup to iteratively correct the model
coefficients, until all local passivity violations are eliminated. The final
result is a corrected model, which is uniformly passive throughout the
parameter range. Several numerical examples denomstrate the effectiveness of
the proposed approach.Comment: Submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging and

Smart Embedded Passive Acoustic Devices for Real-Time Hydroacoustic Surveys
This paper describes cost-efficient, innovative and interoperable ocean passive acoustics sensors systems, developed within the European FP7 project NeXOS (Next generation Low-Cost Multifunctional Web Enabled Ocean Sensor Systems Empowering Marine, Maritime and Fisheries Management) These passive acoustic sensors consist of two low power, innovative digital hydrophone systems with embedded processing of acoustic data, A1 and A2, enabling real-time measurement of the underwater soundscape. An important part of the effort is focused on achieving greater dynamic range and effortless integration on autonomous platforms, such as gliders and profilers. A1 is a small standalone, compact, low power, low consumption digital hydrophone with embedded pre-processing of acoustic data, suitable for mobile platforms with limited autonomy and communication capability. A2 consists of four A1 digital hydrophones with Ethernet interface and one master unit for data processing, enabling real-time measurement of underwater noise and soundscape sources. In this work the real-time acoustic processing algorithms implemented for A1 and A2 are described, including computational load evaluations of the algorithms. The results obtained from the real time test done with the A2 assembly at OBSEA observatory collected during the verification phase of the project are presented.Postprint (author's final draft
Guaranteed passive parameterized macromodeling by using Sylvester state-space realizations
A novel state-space realization for parameterized macromodeling is proposed in this paper. A judicious choice of the state-space realization is required in order to account for the assumed smoothness of the state-space matrices with respect to the design parameters. This technique is used in combination with suitable interpolation schemes to interpolate a set of state-space matrices, and hence the poles and residues indirectly, in order to build accurate parameterized macromodels. The key points of the novel state-space realizations are the choice of a proper pivot matrix and a well-conditioned solution of a Sylvester equation. Stability and passivity are guaranteed by construction over the design space of interest. Pertinent numerical examples validate the proposed Sylvester realization for parameterized macromodeling
Guaranteed passive parameterized model order reduction of the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method
The decrease of IC feature size and the increase of operating frequencies require 3-D electromagnetic methods, such as the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method, for the analysis and design of high-speed circuits. Very large systems of equations are often produced by 3-D electromagnetic methods. During the circuit synthesis of large-scale digital or analog applications, it is important to predict the response of the system under study as a function of design parameters, such as geometrical and substrate features, in addition to frequency (or time). Parameterized model order reduction (PMOR) methods become necessary to reduce large systems of equations with respect to frequency and other design parameters. We propose an innovative PMOR technique applicable to PEEC analysis, which combines traditional passivity-preserving model order reduction methods and positive interpolation schemes. It is able to provide parametric reduced-order models, stable, and passive by construction over a user-defined range of design parameter values. Numerical examples validate the proposed approach
