    Parameterized Algorithms for Directed Maximum Leaf Problems

    We prove that finding a rooted subtree with at least kk leaves in a digraph is a fixed parameter tractable problem. A similar result holds for finding rooted spanning trees with many leaves in digraphs from a wide family L\cal L that includes all strong and acyclic digraphs. This settles completely an open question of Fellows and solves another one for digraphs in L\cal L. Our algorithms are based on the following combinatorial result which can be viewed as a generalization of many results for a `spanning tree with many leaves' in the undirected case, and which is interesting on its own: If a digraph DLD\in \cal L of order nn with minimum in-degree at least 3 contains a rooted spanning tree, then DD contains one with at least (n/2)1/51(n/2)^{1/5}-1 leaves

    Beyond Bidimensionality: Parameterized Subexponential Algorithms on Directed Graphs

    We develop two different methods to achieve subexponential time parameterized algorithms for problems on sparse directed graphs. We exemplify our approaches with two well studied problems. For the first problem, {\sc kk-Leaf Out-Branching}, which is to find an oriented spanning tree with at least kk leaves, we obtain an algorithm solving the problem in time 2O(klogk)n+nO(1)2^{O(\sqrt{k} \log k)} n+ n^{O(1)} on directed graphs whose underlying undirected graph excludes some fixed graph HH as a minor. For the special case when the input directed graph is planar, the running time can be improved to 2O(k)n+nO(1)2^{O(\sqrt{k})}n + n^{O(1)}. The second example is a generalization of the {\sc Directed Hamiltonian Path} problem, namely {\sc kk-Internal Out-Branching}, which is to find an oriented spanning tree with at least kk internal vertices. We obtain an algorithm solving the problem in time 2O(klogk)+nO(1)2^{O(\sqrt{k} \log k)} + n^{O(1)} on directed graphs whose underlying undirected graph excludes some fixed apex graph HH as a minor. Finally, we observe that for any ϵ>0\epsilon>0, the {\sc kk-Directed Path} problem is solvable in time O((1+ϵ)knf(ϵ))O((1+\epsilon)^k n^{f(\epsilon)}), where ff is some function of \ve. Our methods are based on non-trivial combinations of obstruction theorems for undirected graphs, kernelization, problem specific combinatorial structures and a layering technique similar to the one employed by Baker to obtain PTAS for planar graphs

    Data Reductions and Combinatorial Bounds for Improved Approximation Algorithms

    Kernelization algorithms in the context of Parameterized Complexity are often based on a combination of reduction rules and combinatorial insights. We will expose in this paper a similar strategy for obtaining polynomial-time approximation algorithms. Our method features the use of approximation-preserving reductions, akin to the notion of parameterized reductions. We exemplify this method to obtain the currently best approximation algorithms for \textsc{Harmless Set}, \textsc{Differential} and \textsc{Multiple Nonblocker}, all of them can be considered in the context of securing networks or information propagation

    Parameterized Algorithms for Modular-Width

    It is known that a number of natural graph problems which are FPT parameterized by treewidth become W-hard when parameterized by clique-width. It is therefore desirable to find a different structural graph parameter which is as general as possible, covers dense graphs but does not incur such a heavy algorithmic penalty. The main contribution of this paper is to consider a parameter called modular-width, defined using the well-known notion of modular decompositions. Using a combination of ILPs and dynamic programming we manage to design FPT algorithms for Coloring and Partitioning into paths (and hence Hamiltonian path and Hamiltonian cycle), which are W-hard for both clique-width and its recently introduced restriction, shrub-depth. We thus argue that modular-width occupies a sweet spot as a graph parameter, generalizing several simpler notions on dense graphs but still evading the "price of generality" paid by clique-width.Comment: to appear in IPEC 2013. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1304.5479 by other author

    On the Equivalence among Problems of Bounded Width

    In this paper, we introduce a methodology, called decomposition-based reductions, for showing the equivalence among various problems of bounded-width. First, we show that the following are equivalent for any α>0\alpha > 0: * SAT can be solved in O(2αtw)O^*(2^{\alpha \mathrm{tw}}) time, * 3-SAT can be solved in O(2αtw)O^*(2^{\alpha \mathrm{tw}}) time, * Max 2-SAT can be solved in O(2αtw)O^*(2^{\alpha \mathrm{tw}}) time, * Independent Set can be solved in O(2αtw)O^*(2^{\alpha \mathrm{tw}}) time, and * Independent Set can be solved in O(2αcw)O^*(2^{\alpha \mathrm{cw}}) time, where tw and cw are the tree-width and clique-width of the instance, respectively. Then, we introduce a new parameterized complexity class EPNL, which includes Set Cover and Directed Hamiltonicity, and show that SAT, 3-SAT, Max 2-SAT, and Independent Set parameterized by path-width are EPNL-complete. This implies that if one of these EPNL-complete problems can be solved in O(ck)O^*(c^k) time, then any problem in EPNL can be solved in O(ck)O^*(c^k) time.Comment: accepted to ESA 201

    Kernelizations for the hybridization number problem on multiple nonbinary trees

    Given a finite set XX, a collection T\mathcal{T} of rooted phylogenetic trees on XX and an integer kk, the Hybridization Number problem asks if there exists a phylogenetic network on XX that displays all trees from T\mathcal{T} and has reticulation number at most kk. We show two kernelization algorithms for Hybridization Number, with kernel sizes 4k(5k)t4k(5k)^t and 20k2(Δ+1)20k^2(\Delta^+-1) respectively, with tt the number of input trees and Δ+\Delta^+ their maximum outdegree. Experiments on simulated data demonstrate the practical relevance of these kernelization algorithms. In addition, we present an nf(k)tn^{f(k)}t-time algorithm, with n=Xn=|X| and ff some computable function of kk

    Subset feedback vertex set is fixed parameter tractable

    The classical Feedback Vertex Set problem asks, for a given undirected graph G and an integer k, to find a set of at most k vertices that hits all the cycles in the graph G. Feedback Vertex Set has attracted a large amount of research in the parameterized setting, and subsequent kernelization and fixed-parameter algorithms have been a rich source of ideas in the field. In this paper we consider a more general and difficult version of the problem, named Subset Feedback Vertex Set (SUBSET-FVS in short) where an instance comes additionally with a set S ? V of vertices, and we ask for a set of at most k vertices that hits all simple cycles passing through S. Because of its applications in circuit testing and genetic linkage analysis SUBSET-FVS was studied from the approximation algorithms perspective by Even et al. [SICOMP'00, SIDMA'00]. The question whether the SUBSET-FVS problem is fixed-parameter tractable was posed independently by Kawarabayashi and Saurabh in 2009. We answer this question affirmatively. We begin by showing that this problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parametrized by |S|. Next we present an algorithm which reduces the given instance to 2^k n^O(1) instances with the size of S bounded by O(k^3), using kernelization techniques such as the 2-Expansion Lemma, Menger's theorem and Gallai's theorem. These two facts allow us to give a 2^O(k log k) n^O(1) time algorithm solving the Subset Feedback Vertex Set problem, proving that it is indeed fixed-parameter tractable.Comment: full version of a paper presented at ICALP'1

    Parameterized Complexity of Graph Constraint Logic

    Graph constraint logic is a framework introduced by Hearn and Demaine, which provides several problems that are often a convenient starting point for reductions. We study the parameterized complexity of Constraint Graph Satisfiability and both bounded and unbounded versions of Nondeterministic Constraint Logic (NCL) with respect to solution length, treewidth and maximum degree of the underlying constraint graph as parameters. As a main result we show that restricted NCL remains PSPACE-complete on graphs of bounded bandwidth, strengthening Hearn and Demaine's framework. This allows us to improve upon existing results obtained by reduction from NCL. We show that reconfiguration versions of several classical graph problems (including independent set, feedback vertex set and dominating set) are PSPACE-complete on planar graphs of bounded bandwidth and that Rush Hour, generalized to k×nk\times n boards, is PSPACE-complete even when kk is at most a constant
