Meta-heuristic based Construction Supply Chain Modelling and Optimization

    Get PDF
Driven by the severe competition within the construction industry, the necessity of improving and optimizing the performance of construction supply chain has been aroused. This thesis proposes three problems with regard to the construction supply chain optimization from three perspectives, namely, deterministic single objective optimization, stochastic optimization and multi-objective optimization respectively. Mathematical models for each problem are constructed accordingly and meta-heuristic algorithms are developed and applied for resolving these three problems

Today, the flow of electricity is bidirectional, and not all electricity is centrally produced in large power plants. With the growing emergence of prosumers and microgrids, the amount of electricity produced by sources other than large, traditional power plants is ever-increasing. These alternative sources include photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), geothermal, and biomass renewable generation plants. Some renewable energy resources (solar PV and wind turbine generation) are highly dependent on natural processes and parameters (wind speed, wind direction, temperature, solar irradiation, humidity, etc.). Thus, the outputs are so stochastic in nature. New data-science-inspired real-time solutions are needed in order to co-develop digital twins of large intermittent renewable plants whose services can be globally delivered

The climate changes that are becoming visible today are a challenge for the global research community. In this context, renewable energy sources, fuel cell systems, and other energy generating sources must be optimally combined and connected to the grid system using advanced energy transaction methods. As this reprint presents the latest solutions in the implementation of fuel cell and renewable energy in mobile and stationary applications, such as hybrid and microgrid power systems based on the Energy Internet, Blockchain technology, and smart contracts, we hope that they will be of interest to readers working in the related fields mentioned above

Power system reliability enhancement with reactive power compensation and operational risk assessment with smart maintenance for power generators

Modern power systems incorporate advanced contingency measures with the aim of enhancing system performance. Among them, the strategical installation of reactive power compensators into a power system is commonly practised to minimize power losses and improve system reliability. Such a practice requires a robust optimization technique that could reduce the computational burden and provide optimal planning and operation of the compensators. This thesis proposes an advanced optimization technique, named as Accelerated Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization (AQPSO) to determine the optimal placement, sizing and dispatch strategy of the reactive power compensators with the aim of improving the system level reliability. The uniqueness of the technique is the incorporation of the concept ‘best observation’, which accelerates the search towards the optimal solution. The implementation of advanced maintenance strategies is another common contingency measure used to enhance system performance. In this context, this thesis proposes a novel Smart Maintenance (SM) strategy for power generators that maximize the generation adequacy and provide increased economic benefits in a framework of system reliability. The uniqueness of the SM approach is the incorporation of the ‘obsolescence’ state through the stages of the bathtub curve and half-arch shape to model the aging process and then quantify the operational risk of the generators using fuzzy logic theory. Further, SM combines the proposed AQPSO and Sequential Median Latin Hypercube to obtain a comprehensive maintenance schedule. The investigation presented in this thesis contributes with novel AQPSO-based algorithms to enhance power system reliability with the operation of reactive power compensation; a more realistic and accurate aging reliability model of power generators; a detailed SM mathematical framework and an algorithm for the scheduling of proactive maintenance of generators of small and large-power systems. The proposed models are significant in the journey to the smart operation of a power system with diverse levels of applications

    Microgrids/Nanogrids Implementation, Planning, and Operation

Today’s power system is facing the challenges of increasing global demand for electricity, high-reliability requirements, the need for clean energy and environmental protection, and planning restrictions. To move towards a green and smart electric power system, centralized generation facilities are being transformed into smaller and more distributed ones. As a result, the microgrid concept is emerging, where a microgrid can operate as a single controllable system and can be viewed as a group of distributed energy loads and resources, which can include many renewable energy sources and energy storage systems. The energy management of a large number of distributed energy resources is required for the reliable operation of the microgrid. Microgrids and nanogrids can allow for better integration of distributed energy storage capacity and renewable energy sources into the power grid, therefore increasing its efficiency and resilience to natural and technical disruptive events. Microgrid networking with optimal energy management will lead to a sort of smart grid with numerous benefits such as reduced cost and enhanced reliability and resiliency. They include small-scale renewable energy harvesters and fixed energy storage units typically installed in commercial and residential buildings. In this challenging context, the objective of this book is to address and disseminate state-of-the-art research and development results on the implementation, planning, and operation of microgrids/nanogrids, where energy management is one of the core issues

Optimisation, Optimal Control and Nonlinear Dynamics in Electrical Power, Energy Storage and Renewable Energy Systems

The electrical power system is undergoing a revolution enabled by advances in telecommunications, computer hardware and software, measurement, metering systems, IoT, and power electronics. Furthermore, the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, energy storage devices, and electric vehicles and the drive for energy efficiency have pushed power systems to modernise and adopt new technologies. The resulting smart grid is characterised, in part, by a bi-directional flow of energy and information. The evolution of the power grid, as well as its interconnection with energy storage systems and renewable energy sources, has created new opportunities for optimising not only their techno-economic aspects at the planning stages but also their control and operation. However, new challenges emerge in the optimization of these systems due to their complexity and nonlinear dynamic behaviour as well as the uncertainties involved. This volume is a selection of 20 papers carefully made by the editors from the MDPI topic “Optimisation, Optimal Control and Nonlinear Dynamics in Electrical Power, Energy Storage and Renewable Energy Systems”, which was closed in April 2022. The selected papers address the above challenges and exemplify the significant benefits that optimisation and nonlinear control techniques can bring to modern power and energy systems
