Joint & Progressive Learning from High-Dimensional Data for Multi-Label Classification
Despite the fact that nonlinear subspace learning techniques (e.g. manifold
learning) have successfully applied to data representation, there is still room
for improvement in explainability (explicit mapping), generalization
(out-of-samples), and cost-effectiveness (linearization). To this end, a novel
linearized subspace learning technique is developed in a joint and progressive
way, called \textbf{j}oint and \textbf{p}rogressive \textbf{l}earning
str\textbf{a}teg\textbf{y} (J-Play), with its application to multi-label
classification. The J-Play learns high-level and semantically meaningful
feature representation from high-dimensional data by 1) jointly performing
multiple subspace learning and classification to find a latent subspace where
samples are expected to be better classified; 2) progressively learning
multi-coupled projections to linearly approach the optimal mapping bridging the
original space with the most discriminative subspace; 3) locally embedding
manifold structure in each learnable latent subspace. Extensive experiments are
performed to demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed
method in comparison with previous state-of-the-art methods.Comment: accepted in ECCV 201

The fundamentals of unimodal palmprint authentication based on a biometric system: A review
Biometric system can be defined as the automated method of identifying or authenticating the identity of a living person based on physiological or behavioral traits. Palmprint biometric-based authentication has gained considerable attention in recent years. Globally, enterprises have been exploring biometric authorization for some time, for the purpose of security, payment processing, law enforcement CCTV systems, and even access to offices, buildings, and gyms via the entry doors. Palmprint biometric system can be divided into unimodal and multimodal. This paper will investigate the biometric system and provide a detailed overview of the palmprint technology with existing recognition approaches. Finally, we introduce a review of previous works based on a unimodal palmprint system using different databases
Multispectral palmprint recognition using Pascal coefficients-based LBP and PHOG descriptors with random sampling
Local binary pattern (LBP) algorithm and its variants have been used extensively to analyse the local textural features of digital images with great success. Numerous extensions of LBP descriptors have been suggested, focusing on improving their robustness to noise and changes in image conditions. In our research, inspired by the concepts of LBP feature descriptors and a random sampling subspace, we propose an ensemble learning framework, using a variant of LBP constructed from Pascal’s coefficients of n-order and referred to as a multiscale local binary pattern. To address the inherent overfitting problem of linear discriminant analysis, PCA was applied to the training samples. Random sampling was used to generate multiple feature subsets. In addition, in this work, we propose a new feature extraction technique that combines the pyramid histogram of oriented gradients and LBP, where the features are concatenated for use in the classification. Its performance in recognition was evaluated using the Hong Kong Polytechnic University database. Extensive experiments unmistakably show the superiority of the proposed approach compared to state-of-the-art techniques

Deep learning approach for Touchless Palmprint Recognition based on Alexnet and Fuzzy Support Vector Machine
Due to stable and discriminative features, palmprint-based biometrics has been gaining popularity in recent years. Most of the traditional palmprint recognition systems are designed with a group of hand-crafted features that ignores some additional features. For tackling the problem described above, a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) model inspired by Alex-net that learns the features from the ROI images and classifies using a fuzzy support vector machine is proposed. The output of the CNN is fed as input to the fuzzy Support vector machine. The CNN\u27s receptive field aids in extracting the most discriminative features from the palmprint images, and Fuzzy SVM results in a robust classification. The experiments are conducted on popular contactless datasets such as IITD, POLYU2, Tongji, and CASIA databases. Results demonstrate our approach outperformers several state-of-art techniques for palmprint recognition. Using this approach, we obtain 99.98% testing accuracy for the Tongji dataset and 99.76 % for the POLYU-II datasets
