Meeting the IT Skills Crisis: An Interdisciplinary Response

    Get PDF
The pervasiveness of computers in modern life has created a need for greater diversity in the knowledge and skills of information/technology professionals. We, as well as others, have identified an IT education gap between the technical focus of computer science degrees and the business focus of MIS concentrations. We describe a new interdisciplinary curriculum (a Bachelor of Science in Information Science) that Northeastern University has developed to fill the IT education gap. The new degree draws from computer science, business, and behavioral science, offering a balance between the technical, functional, and human dimensions of information/system analysis and design not found in other undergraduate programs. It encompasses three broad content areas: computer technology, information systems and human/organizational context. In addition, students acquire the analytical models and tools needed to approach the content areas from a conceptual perspective. An experiential learning requirement enables students to apply their classroom knowledge and skills in relevant productive work. In the future, academics and practitioners need to work together to better articulate new career paths for information/technology professionals and the appropriate educational programs to serve their needs

The article substantiates the structural and functional model of formation of the readiness of future specialists in computer technologies for professional activity by means of digital technologies. To achieve the goal of the article, the methodology is applied, which consists in conducting an analysis of the research of the problem of pedagogical modeling of the formation of the readiness of future specialists in computer technologies for professional activities in the field of digital technologies. On the basis of the conducted analysis, the concept of «structural-functional model», its structure and prospects of introduction into the educational process of future specialists in computer technologies are defined. It has been established that models in pedagogical science are successfully used for high-quality planning of the educational process, management of cognitive activity of students and optimization of the structure of educational material. In order to build a structural-functional model, its main constituent elements were determined, combined into logical blocks corresponding to the stages of the educational process (target, content, organizational, diagnostic-resultative) and complex application of modern digital technologies at all stages. The effectiveness of the implementation of the model was ensured by predefined organizational and pedagogical conditions

This research study aims to delve into the complexities of transformation dynamics by examining the outcomes of a survey that involved 55 participants, with diverse backgrounds. The introduction places this research within the context of the changing landscape of transformation. To gain an understanding of how computer science and organizational change intersect the study begins with a review of relevant literature. The methodology employed includes gathering data through a survey and quantitative analysis was used to explore the detailed responses provided by participants. The findings shed light on aspects such as demographics, beliefs regarding the role of computer science challenges faced, and opportunities identified. Through an analysis, the discussion provides interpretations of these findings. One key recommendation from this study is to prioritize training as a crucial solution. In conclusion, this comprehensive study offers insights for navigating digital transformation and contributes to the ongoing conversation, in this transformative field

Leveraging Big Data Analytics to Improve Quality of Care In Health Care: A fsQCA Approach

    Get PDF
Academics across disciplines such as information systems, computer science and healthcare informatics highlight that big data analytics (BDA) have the potential to provide tremendous benefits for healthcare industries. Nevertheless, healthcare organizations continue to struggle to make progress on their BDA initiatives. Drawing on the configuration theory, this paper proposes a conceptual framework to explore the impact of BDA on improving quality of care in health care. Specifically, we investigate how BDA capabilities interact with complementary organizational resources and organizational capabilities in multiple configurations to achieve higher quality of care. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), which is a relatively new approach, was employed to identify five different configurations that lead to higher quality of care. These findings offer evidence to suggest that a range of solutions leading to better healthcare performance can indeed be identified through the effective use of BDA and other organizational elements

Social Network Analysis and Visualization with R

In industrial revolution 4.0 period, social network Service (SNS) usage is rising. In this circumstance, Social network analysis has emerged as a key technique in modern sociology. It has also gained a significant following in anthropology, biology, communication studies, business management, economics, geography, history, information science, organizational studies, political science, social psychology, development studies, sociolinguistics, and computer science and is now commonly available as a consumer tool. SNA is a branch of Network Science, which is an attempt to understand networks emerging in nature, technology and society using R. Researcher can find hub and node for practical application. And word cloud is the representative tool for visualization of communication. The resulting networks, which can contain thousands of nodes, are then analyzed by using R from network theory to identify the key actors, the key communities or parties, and general properties such as robustness or structural stability of the overall network, or centrality of certain nodes

A Reclassification of IS Security Analysis Approaches

    Get PDF
The role of security management in the development and operation of information systems has a long tradition of research in computer science, information systems and management science. Integrating the economic, organizational, and technical aspects of information systems security analysis and assessment requires a bridging of these different research streams. We examined major articles published concerning IS security using a new classification scheme for IS security analysis and assessment approaches. We looked at approaches discussed in recent publications as well those examined as in past articles that have attempted to classify various approaches to IS security. This paper therefore organizes a diverse collection of literature into a cohesive whole with the aim of providing IS management with an overview of current security analysis approaches, thereby offering management an effective aide for selecting the methods best suited to their needs. Furthermore, this work structures IS security research into a classification scheme that can also be used in future research and practice

Digital Transformation in the Public Administrations: A Guided Tour for Computer Scientists

    Get PDF
The goal of Digital Transformation of the Public Sector is the achievement of a better quality of life for citizens, via a more responsive and transparent administration and governance. By now it is clear that technological innovation, both in terms of computer architectures and software systems, is a crucial component of it, yet not sufficient. Indeed, a cultural, organizational and legal shift in how public organizations operate and relate to the citizens is also required. Nevertheless, computer scientists can play a key role in such a transformation and, given its impact on Society, it is essential to achieve a broader level of awareness of it and involvement in it of those scientific and professional figures. To this end, a technical map specifically designed for computer scientists, but properly placed in the context of the cultural, organizational and legal changes mentioned above, would be highly beneficial. To date, such a map is missing, to the best of our knowledge. The main contribution of this Tutorial is to provide it, together with a guided tour describing which key technological aspects enable and drive such a transformation. More specifically, based on a careful analysis of the available scholarly literature, that does not seem to include any Computer Science textbook material, a model of such a transformation is proposed, together with carefully selected examples incarnating it to show its validity: the cities of Barcelona and Chicago. Finally, a look at the future of this area is also provided

Link Between Planning, Learning, and Performance

For my Capstone I worked on a project studying the link between organizational planning, learning and performance. In the study I looked at four different industries in the Midwest. These industries were financial services, manufacturing of electronics parts, newspapers, and metal stamping. A survey was sent to each of the companies in these four industries after a phone call was made to each of them. As the surveys were received they were entered into a computer program for regression analysis. There were four main hypotheses that were looked at and the following are the results of those hypotheses. A strong support was shown for a relationship between strategic planning and level of organizational learning. There was also a positive relationship between learning and performance. No relationship was found between strategic type and the learning/performance relationship. There was a relationship between level of environmental hostility and learning, but not for environmental hostility and sales.B.S. (Bachelor of Science
