Intelligent optic disc segmentation using improved particle swarm optimization and evolving ensemble models

    Get PDF
In this research, we propose Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-enhanced ensemble deep neural networks for optic disc (OD) segmentation using retinal images. An improved PSO algorithm with six search mechanisms to diversify the search process is introduced. It consists of an accelerated super-ellipse action, a refined super-ellipse operation, a modified PSO operation, a random leader-based search operation, an average leader-based search operation and a spherical random walk mechanism for swarm leader enhancement. Owing to the superior segmentation capabilities of Mask R-CNN, transfer learning with a PSO-based hyper-parameter identification method is employed to generate the fine-tuned segmenters for OD segmentation. Specifically, we optimize the learning parameters, which include the learning rate and momentum of the transfer learning process, using the proposed PSO algorithm. To overcome the bias of single networks, an ensemble segmentation model is constructed. It incorporates the results of distinctive base segmenters using a pixel-level majority voting mechanism to generate the final segmentation outcome. The proposed ensemble network is evaluated using the Messidor and Drions data sets and is found to significantly outperform other deep ensemble networks and hybrid ensemble clustering models that are incorporated with both the original and state-of-the-art PSO variants. Additionally, the proposed method statistically outperforms existing studies on OD segmentation and other search methods for solving diverse unimodal and multimodal benchmark optimization functions and the detection of Diabetic Macular Edema

A novel face recognition system in unconstrained environments using a convolutional neural network

    Get PDF
The performance of most face recognition systems (FRS) in unconstrained environments is widely noted to be sub-optimal. One reason for this poor performance may be due to the lack of highly effective image pre-processing approaches, which are typically required before the feature extraction and classification stages. Furthermore, it is noted that only minimal face recognition issues are typically considered in most FRS, thus limiting the wide applicability of most FRS in real-life scenarios. Thus, it is envisaged that developing more effective pre-processing techniques, in addition to selecting the correct features for classification, will significantly improve the performance of FRS. The thesis investigates different research works on FRS, its techniques and challenges in unconstrained environments. The thesis proposes a novel image enhancement technique as a pre-processing approach for FRS. The proposed enhancement technique improves on the overall FRS model resulting into an increased recognition performance. Also, a selection of novel hybrid features has been presented that is extracted from the enhanced facial images within the dataset to improve recognition performance. The thesis proposes a novel evaluation function as a component within the image enhancement technique to improve face recognition in unconstrained environments. Also, a defined scale mechanism was designed within the evaluation function to evaluate the enhanced images such that extreme values depict too dark or too bright images. The proposed algorithm enables the system to automatically select the most appropriate enhanced face image without human intervention. Evaluation of the proposed algorithm was done using standard parameters, where it is demonstrated to outperform existing image enhancement techniques both quantitatively and qualitatively. The thesis confirms the effectiveness of the proposed image enhancement technique towards face recognition in unconstrained environments using the convolutional neural network. Furthermore, the thesis presents a selection of hybrid features from the enhanced image that results in effective image classification. Different face datasets were selected where each face image was enhanced using the proposed and existing image enhancement technique prior to the selection of features and classification task. Experiments on the different face datasets showed increased and better performance using the proposed approach. The thesis shows that putting an effective image enhancement technique as a preprocessing approach can improve the performance of FRS as compared to using unenhanced face images. Also, the right features to be extracted from the enhanced face dataset as been shown to be an important factor for the improvement of FRS. The thesis made use of standard face datasets to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. On the LFW face dataset, an improved performance recognition rate was obtained when considering all the facial conditions within the face dataset.Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2018.CSIR-DST Inter programme bursaryElectrical, Electronic and Computer EngineeringPhDUnrestricte

    Applied Metaheuristic Computing

For decades, Applied Metaheuristic Computing (AMC) has been a prevailing optimization technique for tackling perplexing engineering and business problems, such as scheduling, routing, ordering, bin packing, assignment, facility layout planning, among others. This is partly because the classic exact methods are constrained with prior assumptions, and partly due to the heuristics being problem-dependent and lacking generalization. AMC, on the contrary, guides the course of low-level heuristics to search beyond the local optimality, which impairs the capability of traditional computation methods. This topic series has collected quality papers proposing cutting-edge methodology and innovative applications which drive the advances of AMC

A Parametric Sound Object Model for Sound Texture Synthesis

This thesis deals with the analysis and synthesis of sound textures based on parametric sound objects. An overview is provided about the acoustic and perceptual principles of textural acoustic scenes, and technical challenges for analysis and synthesis are considered. Four essential processing steps for sound texture analysis are identifi ed, and existing sound texture systems are reviewed, using the four-step model as a guideline. A theoretical framework for analysis and synthesis is proposed. A parametric sound object synthesis (PSOS) model is introduced, which is able to describe individual recorded sounds through a fi xed set of parameters. The model, which applies to harmonic and noisy sounds, is an extension of spectral modeling and uses spline curves to approximate spectral envelopes, as well as the evolution of parameters over time. In contrast to standard spectral modeling techniques, this representation uses the concept of objects instead of concatenated frames, and it provides a direct mapping between sounds of diff erent length. Methods for automatic and manual conversion are shown. An evaluation is presented in which the ability of the model to encode a wide range of di fferent sounds has been examined. Although there are aspects of sounds that the model cannot accurately capture, such as polyphony and certain types of fast modulation, the results indicate that high quality synthesis can be achieved for many different acoustic phenomena, including instruments and animal vocalizations. In contrast to many other forms of sound encoding, the parametric model facilitates various techniques of machine learning and intelligent processing, including sound clustering and principal component analysis. Strengths and weaknesses of the proposed method are reviewed, and possibilities for future development are discussed

Medical imaging represents the organs, tissues and structures underneath the outer layers of skin and bones etc. and stores information on normal anatomical structures for abnormality detection and diagnosis. In this thesis, tools and techniques are used to automate the analysis of medical images, emphasizing the detection of brain tumor anomalies from brain MRIs, Covid infections from lung CT images and pancreatic tumor from pancreatic CT images. Image processing methods such as filtering and thresholding models, geometry models, graph models, region-based analysis, connected component analysis, machine learning models, and recent deep learning models are used. The following problems for medical images : abnormality detection, abnormal region segmentation, interactive user interface to represent the results of detection and segmentation while receiving feedbacks from healthcare professionals to improve the analysis procedure, and finally report generation, are considered in this research. Complete interactive systems containing conventional models, machine learning, and deep learning methods for different types of medical abnormalities have been proposed and developed in this thesis. The experimental results show promising outcomes that has led to the incorporation of the methods for the proposed solutions based on the observations of the performance metrics and their comparisons. Although currently separate systems have been developed for brain tumor, Covid and pancreatic cancer, the success of the developed systems show a promising potential to combine them to form a generalized system for analyzing medical imaging of different types collected from any organs to detect any type of abnormalities
