Decision-Feedback Detection Strategy for Nonlinear Frequency-Division Multiplexing

By exploiting a causality property of the nonlinear Fourier transform, a novel decision-feedback detection strategy for nonlinear frequency-division multiplexing (NFDM) systems is introduced. The performance of the proposed strategy is investigated both by simulations and by theoretical bounds and approximations, showing that it achieves a considerable performance improvement compared to previously adopted techniques in terms of Q-factor. The obtained improvement demonstrates that, by tailoring the detection strategy to the peculiar properties of the nonlinear Fourier transform, it is possible to boost the performance of NFDM systems and overcome current limitations imposed by the use of more conventional detection techniques suitable for the linear regime

Some Useful Coding Techniques for Binary Communication Systems

An introduction to coding theory and a discussion of specific coding techniques are given as applied to digital communication systems. The place of coding in a communication system is illustrated and the various approaches to coding are discussed. The information theory concepts required are presented along with the First and Second Fundamental Theorems of Shannon, The relation between Shannon’s theorems and coding for the noisy and noiseless channel is discussed. For the noiseless channel the techniques of Shannon, Fano, Huffman, Gilbert-More, Karp and others are discussed. For the noisy channel, the techniques of Hamming, Slepian, Elias, Cowell, Bose-Chaudhuri, Reed-Muller, Fire, and Wozencraft are presented. The relationships between the various codes are given and the advantages and disadvantages of each indicated. Numerous examples illustrating the use of the codes are given and areas of further research outlined

    Joint source-channel coding with feedback

This paper quantifies the fundamental limits of variable-length transmission of a general (possibly analog) source over a memoryless channel with noiseless feedback, under a distortion constraint. We consider excess distortion, average distortion and guaranteed distortion (dd-semifaithful codes). In contrast to the asymptotic fundamental limit, a general conclusion is that allowing variable-length codes and feedback leads to a sizable improvement in the fundamental delay-distortion tradeoff. In addition, we investigate the minimum energy required to reproduce kk source samples with a given fidelity after transmission over a memoryless Gaussian channel, and we show that the required minimum energy is reduced with feedback and an average (rather than maximal) power constraint.Comment: To appear in IEEE Transactions on Information Theor

PPM demodulation: On approaching fundamental limits of optical communications

We consider the problem of demodulating M-ary optical PPM (pulse-position modulation) waveforms, and propose a structured receiver whose mean probability of symbol error is smaller than all known receivers, and approaches the quantum limit. The receiver uses photodetection coupled with optimized phase-coherent optical feedback control and a phase-sensitive parametric amplifier. We present a general framework of optical receivers known as the conditional pulse nulling receiver, and present new results on ultimate limits and achievable regions of spectral versus photon efficiency tradeoffs for the single-spatial-mode pure-loss optical communication channel.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, IEEE ISIT, Austin, TX (2010

    Vector quantization

During the past ten years Vector Quantization (VQ) has developed from a theoretical possibility promised by Shannon's source coding theorems into a powerful and competitive technique for speech and image coding and compression at medium to low bit rates. In this survey, the basic ideas behind the design of vector quantizers are sketched and some comments made on the state-of-the-art and current research efforts
