Half-integrality, LP-branching and FPT Algorithms
A recent trend in parameterized algorithms is the application of polytope
tools (specifically, LP-branching) to FPT algorithms (e.g., Cygan et al., 2011;
Narayanaswamy et al., 2012). However, although interesting results have been
achieved, the methods require the underlying polytope to have very restrictive
properties (half-integrality and persistence), which are known only for few
problems (essentially Vertex Cover (Nemhauser and Trotter, 1975) and Node
Multiway Cut (Garg et al., 1994)). Taking a slightly different approach, we
view half-integrality as a \emph{discrete} relaxation of a problem, e.g., a
relaxation of the search space from to such that
the new problem admits a polynomial-time exact solution. Using tools from CSP
(in particular Thapper and \v{Z}ivn\'y, 2012) to study the existence of such
relaxations, we provide a much broader class of half-integral polytopes with
the required properties, unifying and extending previously known cases.
In addition to the insight into problems with half-integral relaxations, our
results yield a range of new and improved FPT algorithms, including an
-time algorithm for node-deletion Unique Label Cover with
label set and an -time algorithm for Group Feedback Vertex
Set, including the setting where the group is only given by oracle access. All
these significantly improve on previous results. The latter result also implies
the first single-exponential time FPT algorithm for Subset Feedback Vertex Set,
answering an open question of Cygan et al. (2012).
Additionally, we propose a network flow-based approach to solve some cases of
the relaxation problem. This gives the first linear-time FPT algorithm to

Smooth heaps and a dual view of self-adjusting data structures
We present a new connection between self-adjusting binary search trees (BSTs)
and heaps, two fundamental, extensively studied, and practically relevant
families of data structures. Roughly speaking, we map an arbitrary heap
algorithm within a natural model, to a corresponding BST algorithm with the
same cost on a dual sequence of operations (i.e. the same sequence with the
roles of time and key-space switched). This is the first general transformation
between the two families of data structures.
There is a rich theory of dynamic optimality for BSTs (i.e. the theory of
competitiveness between BST algorithms). The lack of an analogous theory for
heaps has been noted in the literature. Through our connection, we transfer all
instance-specific lower bounds known for BSTs to a general model of heaps,
initiating a theory of dynamic optimality for heaps.
On the algorithmic side, we obtain a new, simple and efficient heap
algorithm, which we call the smooth heap. We show the smooth heap to be the
heap-counterpart of Greedy, the BST algorithm with the strongest proven and
conjectured properties from the literature, widely believed to be
instance-optimal. Assuming the optimality of Greedy, the smooth heap is also
optimal within our model of heap algorithms. As corollaries of results known
for Greedy, we obtain instance-specific upper bounds for the smooth heap, with
applications in adaptive sorting.
Intriguingly, the smooth heap, although derived from a non-practical BST
algorithm, is simple and easy to implement (e.g. it stores no auxiliary data
besides the keys and tree pointers). It can be seen as a variation on the
popular pairing heap data structure, extending it with a "power-of-two-choices"

Network Sparsification for Steiner Problems on Planar and Bounded-Genus Graphs
We propose polynomial-time algorithms that sparsify planar and bounded-genus
graphs while preserving optimal or near-optimal solutions to Steiner problems.
Our main contribution is a polynomial-time algorithm that, given an unweighted
graph embedded on a surface of genus and a designated face bounded
by a simple cycle of length , uncovers a set of size
polynomial in and that contains an optimal Steiner tree for any set of
terminals that is a subset of the vertices of .
We apply this general theorem to prove that: * given an unweighted graph
embedded on a surface of genus and a terminal set , one
can in polynomial time find a set that contains an optimal
Steiner tree for and that has size polynomial in and ; * an
analogous result holds for an optimal Steiner forest for a set of terminal
pairs; * given an unweighted planar graph and a terminal set , one can in polynomial time find a set that contains
an optimal (edge) multiway cut separating and that has size polynomial
in .
In the language of parameterized complexity, these results imply the first
polynomial kernels for Steiner Tree and Steiner Forest on planar and
bounded-genus graphs (parameterized by the size of the tree and forest,
respectively) and for (Edge) Multiway Cut on planar graphs (parameterized by
the size of the cutset). Additionally, we obtain a weighted variant of our main
contribution
Optimal Binary Search Trees with Near Minimal Height
Suppose we have n keys, n access probabilities for the keys, and n+1 access
probabilities for the gaps between the keys. Let h_min(n) be the minimal height
of a binary search tree for n keys. We consider the problem to construct an
optimal binary search tree with near minimal height, i.e.\ with height h <=
h_min(n) + Delta for some fixed Delta. It is shown, that for any fixed Delta
optimal binary search trees with near minimal height can be constructed in time
O(n^2). This is as fast as in the unrestricted case.
So far, the best known algorithms for the construction of height-restricted
optimal binary search trees have running time O(L n^2), whereby L is the
maximal permitted height. Compared to these algorithms our algorithm is at
least faster by a factor of log n, because L is lower bounded by log n
Fixed-parameter tractability of multicut parameterized by the size of the cutset
Given an undirected graph , a collection of
pairs of vertices, and an integer , the Edge Multicut problem ask if there
is a set of at most edges such that the removal of disconnects
every from the corresponding . Vertex Multicut is the analogous
problem where is a set of at most vertices. Our main result is that
both problems can be solved in time , i.e.,
fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the size of the cutset in the
solution. By contrast, it is unlikely that an algorithm with running time of
the form exists for the directed version of the problem, as
we show it to be W[1]-hard parameterized by the size of the cutset
QoS Constrained Optimal Sink and Relay Placement in Planned Wireless Sensor Networks
We are given a set of sensors at given locations, a set of potential
locations for placing base stations (BSs, or sinks), and another set of
potential locations for placing wireless relay nodes. There is a cost for
placing a BS and a cost for placing a relay. The problem we consider is to
select a set of BS locations, a set of relay locations, and an association of
sensor nodes with the selected BS locations, so that number of hops in the path
from each sensor to its BS is bounded by hmax, and among all such feasible
networks, the cost of the selected network is the minimum. The hop count bound
suffices to ensure a certain probability of the data being delivered to the BS
within a given maximum delay under a light traffic model. We observe that the
problem is NP-Hard, and is hard to even approximate within a constant factor.
For this problem, we propose a polynomial time approximation algorithm
(SmartSelect) based on a relay placement algorithm proposed in our earlier
work, along with a modification of the greedy algorithm for weighted set cover.
We have analyzed the worst case approximation guarantee for this algorithm. We
have also proposed a polynomial time heuristic to improve upon the solution
provided by SmartSelect. Our numerical results demonstrate that the algorithms
provide good quality solutions using very little computation time in various
randomly generated network scenarios
