Cascaded Scene Flow Prediction using Semantic Segmentation
Given two consecutive frames from a pair of stereo cameras, 3D scene flow
methods simultaneously estimate the 3D geometry and motion of the observed
scene. Many existing approaches use superpixels for regularization, but may
predict inconsistent shapes and motions inside rigidly moving objects. We
instead assume that scenes consist of foreground objects rigidly moving in
front of a static background, and use semantic cues to produce pixel-accurate
scene flow estimates. Our cascaded classification framework accurately models
3D scenes by iteratively refining semantic segmentation masks, stereo
correspondences, 3D rigid motion estimates, and optical flow fields. We
evaluate our method on the challenging KITTI autonomous driving benchmark, and
show that accounting for the motion of segmented vehicles leads to

Simultaneous Stereo Video Deblurring and Scene Flow Estimation
Videos for outdoor scene often show unpleasant blur effects due to the large
relative motion between the camera and the dynamic objects and large depth
variations. Existing works typically focus monocular video deblurring. In this
paper, we propose a novel approach to deblurring from stereo videos. In
particular, we exploit the piece-wise planar assumption about the scene and
leverage the scene flow information to deblur the image. Unlike the existing
approach [31] which used a pre-computed scene flow, we propose a single
framework to jointly estimate the scene flow and deblur the image, where the
motion cues from scene flow estimation and blur information could reinforce
each other, and produce superior results than the conventional scene flow
estimation or stereo deblurring methods. We evaluate our method extensively on
two available datasets and achieve significant improvement in flow estimation

Unsupervised Adversarial Depth Estimation using Cycled Generative Networks
While recent deep monocular depth estimation approaches based on supervised
regression have achieved remarkable performance, costly ground truth
annotations are required during training. To cope with this issue, in this
paper we present a novel unsupervised deep learning approach for predicting
depth maps and show that the depth estimation task can be effectively tackled
within an adversarial learning framework. Specifically, we propose a deep
generative network that learns to predict the correspondence field i.e. the
disparity map between two image views in a calibrated stereo camera setting.
The proposed architecture consists of two generative sub-networks jointly
trained with adversarial learning for reconstructing the disparity map and
organized in a cycle such as to provide mutual constraints and supervision to
each other. Extensive experiments on the publicly available datasets KITTI and
Cityscapes demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and competitive
results with state of the art methods. The code and trained model are available

An evaluation framework for stereo-based driver assistance
This is the post-print version of the Article - Copyright @ 2012 Springer VerlagThe accuracy of stereo algorithms or optical flow methods is commonly assessed by comparing the results against the Middlebury
database. However, equivalent data for automotive or robotics applications
rarely exist as they are difficult to obtain. As our main contribution, we introduce an evaluation framework tailored for stereo-based driver assistance able to deliver excellent performance measures while
circumventing manual label effort. Within this framework one can combine several ways of ground-truthing, different comparison metrics, and use large image databases.
Using our framework we show examples on several types of ground truthing techniques: implicit ground truthing (e.g. sequence recorded without a crash occurred), robotic vehicles with high precision sensors, and to a small extent, manual labeling. To show the effectiveness of our evaluation framework we compare three different stereo algorithms on
pixel and object level. In more detail we evaluate an intermediate representation
called the Stixel World. Besides evaluating the accuracy of the Stixels, we investigate the completeness (equivalent to the detection rate) of the StixelWorld vs. the number of phantom Stixels. Among many findings, using this framework enables us to reduce the number of phantom Stixels by a factor of three compared to the base parametrization. This base parametrization has already been optimized by test driving vehicles for distances exceeding 10000 km
How do neural networks see depth in single images?
Deep neural networks have lead to a breakthrough in depth estimation from
single images. Recent work often focuses on the accuracy of the depth map,
where an evaluation on a publicly available test set such as the KITTI vision
benchmark is often the main result of the article. While such an evaluation
shows how well neural networks can estimate depth, it does not show how they do
this. To the best of our knowledge, no work currently exists that analyzes what
these networks have learned.
In this work we take the MonoDepth network by Godard et al. and investigate
what visual cues it exploits for depth estimation. We find that the network
ignores the apparent size of known obstacles in favor of their vertical
position in the image. Using the vertical position requires the camera pose to
be known; however we find that MonoDepth only partially corrects for changes in
camera pitch and roll and that these influence the estimated depth towards
obstacles. We further show that MonoDepth's use of the vertical image position
allows it to estimate the distance towards arbitrary obstacles, even those not
appearing in the training set, but that it requires a strong edge at the ground
contact point of the object to do so. In future work we will investigate
whether these observations also apply to other neural networks for monocular
