A stochastic approximation algorithm for stochastic semidefinite programming
Motivated by applications to multi-antenna wireless networks, we propose a
distributed and asynchronous algorithm for stochastic semidefinite programming.
This algorithm is a stochastic approximation of a continous- time matrix
exponential scheme regularized by the addition of an entropy-like term to the
problem's objective function. We show that the resulting algorithm converges
almost surely to an -approximation of the optimal solution
requiring only an unbiased estimate of the gradient of the problem's stochastic
objective. When applied to throughput maximization in wireless multiple-input
and multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the proposed algorithm retains its
convergence properties under a wide array of mobility impediments such as user
update asynchronicities, random delays and/or ergodically changing channels.
Our theoretical analysis is complemented by extensive numerical simulations
which illustrate the robustness and scalability of the proposed method in
realistic network conditions.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure
Joint Pilot Design and Uplink Power Allocation in Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems
This paper considers pilot design to mitigate pilot contamination and provide
good service for everyone in multi-cell Massive multiple input multiple output
(MIMO) systems. Instead of modeling the pilot design as a combinatorial
assignment problem, as in prior works, we express the pilot signals using a
pilot basis and treat the associated power coefficients as continuous
optimization variables. We compute a lower bound on the uplink capacity for
Rayleigh fading channels with maximum ratio detection that applies with
arbitrary pilot signals. We further formulate the max-min fairness problem
under power budget constraints, with the pilot signals and data powers as
optimization variables. Because this optimization problem is non-deterministic
polynomial-time hard due to signomial constraints, we then propose an algorithm
to obtain a local optimum with polynomial complexity. Our framework serves as a
benchmark for pilot design in scenarios with either ideal or non-ideal
hardware. Numerical results manifest that the proposed optimization algorithms
are close to the optimal solution obtained by exhaustive search for different
pilot assignments and the new pilot structure and optimization bring large
gains over the state-of-the-art suboptimal pilot design.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. Accepted to publish at IEEE Transactions on

Joint Beamforming and Power Control in Coordinated Multicell: Max-Min Duality, Effective Network and Large System Transition
This paper studies joint beamforming and power control in a coordinated
multicell downlink system that serves multiple users per cell to maximize the
minimum weighted signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. The optimal solution
and distributed algorithm with geometrically fast convergence rate are derived
by employing the nonlinear Perron-Frobenius theory and the multicell network
duality. The iterative algorithm, though operating in a distributed manner,
still requires instantaneous power update within the coordinated cluster
through the backhaul. The backhaul information exchange and message passing may
become prohibitive with increasing number of transmit antennas and increasing
number of users. In order to derive asymptotically optimal solution, random
matrix theory is leveraged to design a distributed algorithm that only requires
statistical information. The advantage of our approach is that there is no
instantaneous power update through backhaul. Moreover, by using nonlinear
Perron-Frobenius theory and random matrix theory, an effective primal network
and an effective dual network are proposed to characterize and interpret the
asymptotic solution.Comment: Some typos in the version publised in the IEEE Transactions on

Low-Complexity Hybrid Beamforming for Massive MIMO Systems in Frequency-Selective Channels
Hybrid beamforming for frequency-selective channels is a challenging problem
as the phase shifters provide the same phase shift to all of the subcarriers.
The existing approaches solely rely on the channel's frequency response and the
hybrid beamformers maximize the average spectral efficiency over the whole
frequency band. Compared to state-of-the-art, we show that substantial sum-rate
gains can be achieved, both for rich and sparse scattering channels, by jointly
exploiting the frequency and time domain characteristics of the massive
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. In our proposed approach, the
radio frequency (RF) beamformer coherently combines the received symbols in the
time domain and, thus, it concentrates signal's power on a specific time
sample. As a result, the RF beamformer flattens the frequency response of the
"effective" transmission channel and reduces its root mean square delay spread.
Then, a baseband combiner mitigates the residual interference in the frequency
domain. We present the closed-form expressions of the proposed beamformer and
its performance by leveraging the favorable propagation condition of massive
MIMO channels and we prove that our proposed scheme can achieve the performance
of fully-digital zero-forcing when number of employed phase shifter networks is
twice the resolvable multipath components in the time domain.Comment: Accepted to IEEE Acces
