Experimental optical fiber communications link
An optical fiber communications link 1.5 kilometers in length was installed between the Interim Frequency Standard Test Facility and the Timing and Frequency Systems Research Laboratory at JPL. It is being used to develop optical fiber technology for use in the DSN and particularly for precise time and frequency distribution
Information Rates and post-FEC BER Prediction in Optical Fiber Communications
Information-theoretic metrics to analyze optical fiber communications systems
with binary and nonbinary soft-decision FEC are reviewed. The numerical
evaluation of these metrics in both simulations and experiments is also
discussed. Ready-to-use closed-form approximations are presented.Comment: Invited paper, OFC 201
Enabling Technology in Optical Fiber Communications: From Device, System to Networking
This book explores the enabling technology in optical fiber communications. It focuses on the state-of-the-art advances from fundamental theories, devices, and subsystems to networking applications as well as future perspectives of optical fiber communications. The topics cover include integrated photonics, fiber optics, fiber and free-space optical communications, and optical networking
Partially Ordered Statistics Demapping for Multi-Dimensional Modulation Formats
We propose a very low-complexity and high-performance algorithm for
soft-demapping of multi-dimensional modulation formats. We assess its
performance over the linear channel for four 8D formats, generated using binary
arithmetics. This solution outperforms current algorithms in terms of
complexity without loss in performances.Comment: Accepted in the Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC) 201
Nonlinear Frequency-Division Multiplexing in the Focusing Regime
Achievable rates of the nonlinear frequency-division multiplexing (NFDM) and
wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) subject to the same power and bandwidth
constraints are computed as a function of transmit power in the standard
single-mode fiber. NFDM achieves higher rates than WDM.Comment: Invited paper to be presented at The Optical Fiber Communications
Conference and Exposition (OFC), March 201
Spatially Coupled Codes and Optical Fiber Communications: An Ideal Match?
In this paper, we highlight the class of spatially coupled codes and discuss
their applicability to long-haul and submarine optical communication systems.
We first demonstrate how to optimize irregular spatially coupled LDPC codes for
their use in optical communications with limited decoding hardware complexity
and then present simulation results with an FPGA-based decoder where we show
that very low error rates can be achieved and that conventional block-based
LDPC codes can be outperformed. In the second part of the paper, we focus on
the combination of spatially coupled LDPC codes with different demodulators and
detectors, important for future systems with adaptive modulation and for
varying channel characteristics. We demonstrate that SC codes can be employed
as universal, channel-agnostic coding schemes.Comment: Invited paper to be presented in the special session on "Signal
