    Oil Spills and Slicks imaged by Synthetic Aperture Radar

    Oil spills and slicks occur in the ocean around the world due to natural seeps, oil extraction, transportation, and consumption. Satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has proven to be an efficient tool for identifying and classifying oil on the sea surface. This information can be used to monitor areas for potential illegal marine discharge or to respond to an oil spill incident. When used to monitor shipping lanes or drilling platforms, timely analysis can identify offending parties and lead to prosecution. Following an oil spill such as that from the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, SAR can be used to direct response activities and optimize available resources

    Offshore oil seepage visible from space : a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) based automatic detection, mapping and quantification system

    Offshore oil seepage is believed to be the largest source of marine oil, yet very few of their locations and seepage fluxes have been discovered and reported. Natural oil seep sites are important as they serve as potential energy sources and because they are hosts to a very varied marine ecosystem. These seeps can also be associated with gas hydrates and methane emissions and hence, locating natural oil seeps can provide locations where the sources of greenhouse gases could be studied and quantified. A quantification of the amount of crude oil released from natural oil seeps is important as it can be used to set a background against which the excess anthropogenic sources of marine oil can be checked. This will provide an estimate of the 'contamination' of marine waters from anthropogenic sources. Until the onset of remote sensing techniques, field measurements and techniques like hydroacoustic measurements or piston core analysis were used to obtain knowledge about the geological settings of the seeps. The remote sensing techniques either involved manual or semi-automatic image analysis. An automatic algorithm that could quantitatively and qualitatively estimate the locations of oil seeps around the world would reduce the time and costs involved by a considerable margin. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors provide an illumination and weather independent source of ocean images that can be used to detect offshore oil seeps. Oil slicks on the ocean surface dampen the small wind driven waves present on the ocean surface and appear darker against the brighter ocean surface. They can, hence, be detected in SAR image. With the launch of the latest Sentinel-1 satellite aimed at providing free SAR data, an algorithm that detects oil slicks and estimates seep location is very beneficial. The global data coverage and the reduction of processing times for the large amounts of SAR data would be unmatchable. The aim of this thesis was to create such an algorithm that could automatically detect oil slicks in SAR images, map the location of the estimated oil seeps and quantify their seepage fluxes. The thesis consists of three studies that are compiled into one of more manuscripts that are published, accepted for publication or ready for submission. The first study of this thesis involves the creation of the Automatic Seep Location Estimator (ASLE) which detects oil slicks in marine SAR images and estimates offshore oil seepage sites. This, the first fully automatic oil seep location estimation algorithm, has been implemented in the programming language Python and has been tested and validated on ENVISAT images of the Black Sea. The second study reported in this thesis focuses on the optimisation of the created ASLE and comparison of the ASLE with other existing algorithms. It also describes the efficiency of the ASLE with respect to other existing algorithms and the results show that the ASLE can successfully detect seeps of active seepages. The third study aimed to provide the status of the offshore seepage in the southern Gulf of Mexico estimated from the ASLE using SAR images from ENVISAT and RADARSAT-1. The ASLE was used to detect natural oil slicks from SAR images and estimate the locations of feeding seeps. The estimated seep locations and the slicks contributing to these estimations were then analysed to quantify their seepage fluxes and rates. The three case studies illustrate that an automatic offshore seepage detection and estimation system such as the Automatic Seep Location Estimator (ASLE) is very beneficial in order to locate global oil seeps and estimate global seepage fluxes. It provides a technique to detect offshore seeps and their seepage fluxes in a fast and highly efficient manner by using Synthetic Aperture Radar images. This allows global accessibility of offshore oil seepage sites. The availability of large amounts of historic SAR datasets, the presence of 5 active SAR satellites and the latest launch of the European Space Agency satellite Sentinel-1, which provides free data, shows that there is no shortage in the availability of SAR data. The result of the work done in this thesis provides a means to utilise this large SAR dataset for the purpose of offshore oil seepage detection and offshore seepage related geophysical applications. The created system will be an important tool in the future not just to estimate offshore seepage in local seas but in global oceans that are otherwise challenging for field analysis

    Offshore oil spill detection using synthetic aperture radar

    Among the different types of marine pollution, oil spill has been considered as a major threat to the sea ecosystems. The source of the oil pollution can be located on the mainland or directly at sea. The sources of oil pollution at sea are discharges coming from ships, offshore platforms or natural seepage from sea bed. Oil pollution from sea-based sources can be accidental or deliberate. Different sensors to detect and monitor oil spills could be onboard vessels, aircraft, or satellites. Vessels equipped with specialised radars, can detect oil at sea but they can cover a very limited area. One of the established ways to monitor sea-based oil pollution is the use of satellites equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR).The aim of the work presented in this thesis is to identify optimum set of feature extracted parameters and implement methods at various stages for oil spill detection from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. More than 200 images of ERS-2, ENVSAT and RADARSAT 2 SAR sensor have been used to assess proposed feature vector for oil spill detection methodology, which involves three stages: segmentation for dark spot detection, feature extraction and classification of feature vector. Unfortunately oil spill is not only the phenomenon that can create a dark spot in SAR imagery. There are several others meteorological and oceanographic and wind induced phenomena which may lead to a dark spot in SAR imagery. Therefore, these dark objects also appear similar to the dark spot due to oil spill and are called as look-alikes. These look-alikes thus cause difficulty in detecting oil spill spots as their primary characteristic similar to oil spill spots. To get over this difficulty, feature extraction becomes important; a stage which may involve selection of appropriate feature extraction parameters. The main objective of this dissertation is to identify the optimum feature vector in order to segregate oil spill and ‘look-alike’ spots. A total of 44 Feature extracted parameters have been studied. For segmentation, four methods; based on edge detection, adaptive theresholding, artificial neural network (ANN) segmentation and the other on contrast split segmentation have been implemented. Spot features are extracted from both the dark spots themselves and their surroundings. Classification stage was performed using two different classification techniques, first one is based on ANN and the other based on a two-stage processing that combines classification tree analysis and fuzzy logic. A modified feature vector, including both new and improved features, is suggested for better description of different types of dark spots. An ANN classifier using full spectrum of feature parameters has also been developed and evaluated. The implemented methodology appears promising in detecting dark spots and discriminating oil spills from look-alikes and processing time is well below any operational service requirements

    Oil spill detection using optical sensors: a multi-temporal approach

    Oil pollution is one of the most destructive consequences due to human activities in the marine environment. Oil wastes come from many sources and take decades to be disposed of. Satellite based remote sensing systems can be implemented into a surveillance and monitoring network. In this study, a multi-temporal approach to the oil spill detection problem is investigated. Change Detection (CD) analysis was applied to MODIS/Terra and Aqua and OLI/Landsat 8 images of several reported oil spill events, characterized by different geographic location, sea conditions, source and extension of the spill. Toward the development of an automatic detection algorithm, a Change Vector Analysis (CVA) technique was implemented to carry out the comparison between the current image of the area of interest and a dataset of reference image, statistically analyzed to reduce the sea spectral variability between different dates. The proposed approach highlights the optical sensors’ capabilities in detecting oil spills at sea. The effectiveness of different sensors’ resolution towards the detection of spills of different size, and the relevance of the sensors’ revisiting time to track and monitor the evolution of the event is also investigated

    Deflection of natural oil droplets through the water column in deep-water environments: The case of the Lower Congo Basin

    International audienceNumerous recurrent seep sites were identified in the deep-water environment of the Lower Congo Basin from the analysis of an extensive dataset of satellite-based synthetic-aperture radar images. The integration of current data was used to link natural oil slicks with active seep-related seafloor features. Acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements across the water column provided an efficient means to evaluate the horizontal deflection of oil droplets rising through the water column. Eulerian propagation model based on a range of potential ascension velocities helped to approximate the path for rising oil plume through the water column using two complementary methods. The first method consisted in simulating the reversed trajectory of oil droplets between sea-surface oil slick locations observed during current measurements and seep-related seafloor features while considering a range of ascension velocities. The second method compared the spatial spreading of natural oil slicks from 21 years of satellite monitoring observations for water depths ranging from 1200 to 2700 m against the modeled deflections during the current measurement period. The mapped oil slick origins are restricted to a 2.5 km radius circle from associated seep-related seafloor features. The two methods converge towards a range of ascension velocities for oil droplets through the water column, estimated between 3 and 8 cm s-1. The low deflection values validate that the sub-vertical projection of the average surface area of oil slicks at the sea surface can be used to identify the origin of expelled hydrocarbon from the seafloor, which expresses as specific seafloor disturbances (i.e. pockmarks or mounds) known to expel fluids

    학위논문 (박사)-- 서울대학교 대학원 : 과학교육과 (지구과학전공), 2016. 8. 박경애.In this thesis, the applicability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to interpretation of oceanic phenomena at the coastal regions around Korea peninsula is presented. For that, the spatial and temporal variations of SAR-derived coastal wind fields and evolution of disastrous oil spills on SAR images were analyzed in relation to atmospheric and oceanic environmental factors using in-situ measurement and satellite observations. The SAR wind fields retrieved from the east coast of Korea in August 2007 during the upwelling period revealed a spatial distinction between near and offshore regions. Low wind speeds were associated with cold water regions with dominant coastal upwelling. Time series of in-situ measurements of both wind speed and water temperature indicated that the upwelling was induced by the wind field. SAR data at the present upwelling region showed a relatively large backscattering attenuation to SST ratio of 1.2 dB ºC−1 compared the known dependence of the water viscosity on the radar backscattering. In addition, wind speed magnitude showed a positive correlation with the difference between SST and air temperature. It implies that the low wind field from SAR was mainly induced by changes in atmospheric stability due to air-sea temperature differences. Oil spills at the Hebei Spirit accident off the coast of Korea in the Yellow Sea were identified using SAR data and their evolution was investigated. To quantitatively analyze the spatial and temporal variations of oil spills, objective detection methods based on adaptive thresholding and a neural network were applied. Prior to applying, the results from two methods were compared for verification. It showed good agreement enough for the estimation of the extent of oil patches and their trajectories, with the exception of negligible errors at the boundaries. Quantitative analyses presented that the detected oil slicks moved southeastward, corresponding to the prevailing wind and tidal currents, and gradually dissipated during the spill, except for an extraordinary rapid decrease in onshore regions at the initial stage. It was identified that the initial dissipation of the spilt oil was induced by strong tidal mixing in the tidal front zone from comparison with the tidal mixing index. The spatial and temporal variations of the oil slicks confirmed the influence of atmospheric and oceanic environmental factors. The overall horizontal migration of the oil spills detected from consecutive SAR images was mainly driven by Ekman drift during the winter monsoon rather than the tidal residual current.Chapter 1.     Oil spills distribution in the Middle and Southern Adriatic Sea as a result of intensive ship traffic

    Detekcija uljnih mrlja sintetičkim satelitskim radarom (SAR) provjerena je i najčešće korištena operativna tehnika, koja je pokazala kako je Sredozemno more često zagađeno uljem i sličnim proizvodima. Zahvaljujući nekolicini projekata Envisat i Radarsat-1 SAR slike su za razdoblje 2003-2011 bile dostupne za analizu. Analizirano je oko 300 SAR slika srednjeg i južnog Jadrana, kako bi se otkrile pojave naftnih mrlja i druge pojave koje imaju sličan signal na satelitskim snimcima. Otkrivena su mnoga izlijevanja nafte u Jadranu, čije su površine bile između 0,1 km2 i 108 km2. Većina izlijevanja je smještena uz glavne brodske rute, osobito u brodskom koridoru duž osi Jadranskog mora. To su vjerojatno ulja namjerno izlivena s brodova tijekom prijevoza ili ribolovnih operacija, a najčešći slučajevi izlijevanja su pranje brodskih spremnika ili nedozvoljena pražnjenja tankova.Oil slick detection by synthetic aperture radars (SAR) is a proven and commonly used operational technique, which showed that the seas of the Mediterranean are often polluted by oil and oily products. For the period 2003-2011, the Envisat and Radarsat-1 SAR images were available for analysis, thanks to the several projects. About 300 SAR images have been analysed over the Middle and Southern Adriatic Sea, in order to detect marine oil spills and other phenomena causing similar signatures. Analysing many oil spills detected in the Adriatic Sea, their sizes were determined between 0.1 km2 and 108 km2. Most of the spills were located along the main shipping routes, especially in the ship corridor along the Adriatic Sea axis. They were, most probably deliberate slicks released from ships during transportation or fishing operations, while suspected source of the largest spills is tank washing or illegal discharges

    The Turkish Straits Sea Area (TSSA) is a long water passage that is consisted of the Sea of Marmara, an inland sea within Turkey's borders, and two narrow straits connected to neighboring seas. With a strategic location between the Balkans and Anatolia, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and dominated by the continental climate, the region hosted many civilizations throughout the centuries. This makes the region among the busiest routes in the world, with sea traffic three times higher than that in the Suez Canal. The straits are the most difficult waterways to navigate and witnessed many hazardous and important collisions and accidents throughout history. In addition, this area has vital roles as a biological corridor and barrier among three distinctive marine realms.
