Ontology Based Method Engineering
We need conceptual modelling languages to gain domain knowledge in the requirements engineering and analysis phases of an IS development project. These languages should serve an IS expert as means of communication between him or her and the domain expert. Many different modelling languages have been used for conceptual modelling. Consequently, questions relating to the quality of these languages have arisen. Wand, Weber and others have evaluated these languages using an ontology. Each of the languages was found to contain certain deficits. Because our aim is to construct a language without such deficits, we propose the opposite technique. We develop an ontologically clear modelling language for process modelling with the help of the BWW representational model. In addition to this modelling language, we introduce a process model which guides model creation. Both components form a conceptual modelling method
Towards Common Ground in SME: An Ontology of Method Descriptors
Part 3: Method Engineering FoundationsInternational audienceThe Method Engineering (ME) community is a prolific research domain where competing Situational Method Engineering (SME) approaches have been defined and used for composing, adapting or/and configuring a method into modular constructs according to their own modularization vision. This diversity shows the richness of the ME domain but implies some drawback like unnecessary confusion for non ME expert, lack of standard & interoperability, lack of implementation tool. However, researchers are agreed that a common ground in SME is a hot matter of discussion. Assuming that the differences between SME approaches are purposeful, we propose to reach a semantic common ground on what types of core concepts constitute a method descriptor. To achieve it, an ontology-based approach is applied in SME to design an ontology of method descriptors as a domain ontology. The semantics of the six most popular SME approaches modular constructs are defined according to this ontology in order to show its usage and its relevance. Finally, usage scenarios have been sketched to show that the ontology can be the start up phase for reducing the ME drawbacks mentioned above
Justifying design decisions with theory-based design principles
Although the role of theories in design research is recognized, we show that little attention has been
paid on how to use theories when designing new artifacts. We introduce design principles as a new
methodological approach to address this problem. Design principles extend the notion of design
rationales that document how a design decision emerged. We extend the concept of design rationales
by using theoretical hypotheses to support or object to design decisions. At the example of developing
a new conceptual modeling grammar we demonstrate two main benefits of using design principles.
First, the link between theory and design decision enables the design researcher to reason about the
resulting behavior of the IT artifact prior to instantiation. Second, design principles allow deducing
empirically testable hypotheses to foster the rigorous evaluation of IT artifacts
Extensibility of Enterprise Modelling Languages
