    Security is becoming an increasingly more important concern both at the desktop level and at the network level. This article discusses several approaches to authenticating individuals through the use of biometric devices. While libraries might not implement such devices, they may appear in the near future of desktop computing, particularly for access to institutional computers or for access to sensitive information. Other approaches to computer security focus on protecting the contents of electronic transmissions and verification of individual users. After a brief overview of encryption technologies, the article examines public-key cryptography which is getting a lot of attention in the business world in what is called public key infrastructure. It also examines other efforts, such as IBM’s Cryptolope, the Secure Sockets Layer of Web browsers, and Digital Certificates and Signatures. Secure electronic transmissions are an important condition for conducting business on the Net. These business transactions are not limited to purchase orders, invoices, and contracts. This could become an important tool for information vendors and publishers to control access to the electronic resources they license. As license negotiators and contract administrators, librarians need to be aware of what is happening in these new technologies and the impact that will have on their operations

    Representation, Recognition and Collaboration with Digital Ink

    Pen input for computing devices is now widespread, providing a promising interaction mechanism for many purposes. Nevertheless, the diverse nature of digital ink and varied application domains still present many challenges. First, the sampling rate and resolution of pen-based devices keep improving, making input data more costly to process and store. At the same time, existing applications typically record digital ink either in proprietary formats, which are restricted to single platforms and consequently lack portability, or simply as images, which lose important information. Moreover, in certain domains such as mathematics, current systems are now achieving good recognition rates on individual symbols, in general recognition of complete expressions remains a problem due to the absence of an effective method that can reliably identify the spatial relationships among symbols. Last, but not least, existing digital ink collaboration tools are platform-dependent and typically allow only one input method to be used at a time. Together with the absence of recognition, this has placed significant limitations on what can be done. In this thesis, we investigate these issues and make contributions to each. We first present an algorithm that can accurately approximate a digital ink curve by selecting a certain subset of points from the original trace. This allows a compact representation of digital ink for efficient processing and storage. We then describe an algorithm that can automatically identify certain important features in handwritten symbols. Identifying the features can help us solve a number of problems such as improving two-dimensional mathematical recognition. Last, we present a framework for multi-user online collaboration in a pen-based and graphical environment. This framework is portable across multiple platforms and allows multimodal interactions in collaborative sessions. To demonstrate our ideas, we present InkChat, a whiteboard application, which can be used to conduct collaborative sessions on a shared canvas. It allows participants to use voice and digital ink independently and simultaneously, which has been found useful in remote collaboration

    Combining appearance and context for multi-domain sketch recognition

Wouldn't it be great if we could talk, write, and draw to a computer just like we do with each other? This thesis addresses the drawing aspect of that vision: enabling computers to understand the meaning and semantics of free-hand diagrams. We present a novel framework for sketch recognition that seamlessly combines a rich representation of local visual appearance with a probabilistic graphical model for capturing higher level relationships. This joint model makes our system less sensitive to noise and drawing variations, improving accuracy and robustness. The result is a recognizer that is better able to handle the wide range of drawing styles found in messy freehand sketches. To preserve the fluid process of sketching on paper, our interface allows users to draw diagrams just as they would on paper, using the same notations and conventions. For the isolated symbol recognition task our method exceeds state-of-the-art performance in three domains: handwritten digits, PowerPoint shapes, and electrical circuit symbols. For the complete diagram recognition task it was able to achieve excellent performance on both chemistry and circuit diagrams, improving on the best previous results. Furthermore, in an on-line study our new interface was on average over twice as fast as the existing CAD-based method for authoring chemical diagrams, even for novice users who had little or no experience using a tablet.     Embedded Platform For Online Signature Verification

    in my project the proposed system is used for verifying the signature of particular person with help of embedded plat form on mobile devices. This paper studies online signature verification on PC interface-based mobile devices. A simple and effective method for signature verification is developed. An online signature is represented with a discriminative feature vector derived from attributes of several histograms that can be computed in linear time. The resulting signature template is compact and requires constant space. The algorithm used in this project is SVM (support vector machine). The signatures are acquired using a digitizing tablet which captures both dynamic and spatial information of the writing. After preprocessing the signature, several features are extracted. The authenticity of a writer is determined by comparing an input signature to a stored reference set (template) consisting of three signatures. The similarity between an input signature and the reference set is computed using string matching and the similarity value is compared to a threshold. Several approaches for obtaining the optimal threshold value from the reference set are investigated. The results demonstrate the problem of within-user variation of signatures across multiple signatures and the effectiveness of cross session training strategies to alleviate these problems

    A Support System for Graphics for Visually Impaired People

    As the Internet plays an important role in today’s society, graphics is widely used to present, convey and communicate information in many different areas. Complex information is often easier to understand and analyze by graphics. Even though graphics plays an important role, accessibility support is very limited for web graphics. Web graphics accessibility is not only for people with disabilities, but also for people who want to get and use information in ways different from the ones originally intended. One of the problems regarding graphics for blind people is that we have few data on how a blind person draws or how he/she receives graphical information. Based on Katz’s pupils’ research, one concludes that blind people can draw in outline and that they have a good sense of three-dimensional shape and space. In this thesis, I propose and develop a system, which can serve as a tool to be used by researchers investigating these and related issues. Our support system is built to collect the drawings from visually impaired people by finger movement on Braille devices or touch devices, such as tablets. When the drawing data is collected, the system will automatically generate the graphical XML data, which are easily accessed by applications and web services. The graphical XML data are stored locally or remotely. Compared to other support systems, our system is the first automatic system to provide web services to collect and access such data. The system also has the capability to integrate into cloud computing so that people can use the system anywhere to collect and access the data

    Figures are either re-used with permission, or abstracted with permission from the source article.Sketch recognition of digital ink diagrams is the process of automatically identifying hand-drawn elements in a diagram. This research focuses on the simultaneous grouping and recognition of shapes in digital ink diagrams. In order to recognise a shape, we need to group strokes belonging to a shape, however, strokes cannot be grouped until the shape is identiïŹed. Therefore, we treat grouping and recognition as a simultaneous task. Our grouping technique uses spatial proximity to hypothesise shape candidates. Many of the hypothesised shape candidates are invalid, therefore we need a way to reject them. We present a novel rejection technique based on novelty detection. The rejection method uses proximity measures to validate a shape candidate. In addition, we investigate on improving the accuracy of the current shape recogniser by adding extra features. We also present a novel connector recognition system that localises connector heads around recognised shapes. We perform a full comparative study on two datasets. The results show that our approach is signiïŹcantly more accurate in ïŹnding shapes and faster on process diagram compared to Stahovich et al. (2014), which the results show the superiority of our approach in terms of computation time and accuracy. Furthermore, we evaluate our system on two public datasets and compare our results with other approaches reported in the literature that have used these dataset. The results show that our approach is more accurate in ïŹnding and recognising the shapes in the FC dataset (by ïŹnding and recognising 91.7% of the shapes) compared to the reported results in the literature
