A general theory of action languages
We present a general theory of action-based languages as a paradigm, for the description, of those computational
systems which include elements of concurrency and networking, and extend this approach
to describe dist.ributed systems and also t,o describe the interaction of a system, with an environment.
As part of this approach we introduce the Action Language as a common model for the class of nondeterministic
concurrent programming languages and define its intensional and interaction semantics
in terrors of continuous transformation of environment behavior. This semantics i.s specialized for
programs with stores, and extended to describe distributed computations

Percolation scheduling for non-VLIW machines
Percolation Scheduling, a technique for compile-time code parallelization, has proven very successful for exploiting fine-grain irregular parallelism in ordinary programs. Currently, this technology is targeted only to VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) machines, which have the advantages of 'free' synchronization and communication. Shared memory multi-processors can simulate the execution characteristics of VLIW machines with the use of static barriers. Preliminary results show that Percolation Scheduling can be used with good results on this type of architecture by increasing the granularity from operation level to source statement level, removing any redundant synchronization, and providing an efficient implementation of multi-way jumps
Efficient and Reasonable Object-Oriented Concurrency
Making threaded programs safe and easy to reason about is one of the chief
difficulties in modern programming. This work provides an efficient execution
model for SCOOP, a concurrency approach that provides not only data race
freedom but also pre/postcondition reasoning guarantees between threads. The
extensions we propose influence both the underlying semantics to increase the
amount of concurrent execution that is possible, exclude certain classes of
deadlocks, and enable greater performance. These extensions are used as the
basis an efficient runtime and optimization pass that improve performance 15x
over a baseline implementation. This new implementation of SCOOP is also 2x
faster than other well-known safe concurrent languages. The measurements are
based on both coordination-intensive and data-manipulation-intensive benchmarks

Safe Concurrency Introduction through Slicing
Traditional refactoring is about modifying the structure of existing code without changing its behaviour, but with the aim of making code easier to understand, modify, or reuse. In this paper, we introduce three novel refactorings for retrofitting concurrency to Erlang applications, and demonstrate how the use of program slicing makes the automation of these refactorings possible
Quantifying the benefits of SPECint distant parallelism in simultaneous multithreading architectures
We exploit the existence of distant parallelism that future compilers could detect and characterise its performance under simultaneous multithreading architectures. By distant parallelism we mean parallelism that cannot be captured by the processor instruction window and that can produce threads suitable for parallel execution in a multithreaded processor. We show that distant parallelism can make feasible wider issue processors by providing more instructions from the distant threads, thus better exploiting the resources from the processor in the case of speeding up single integer applications. We also investigate the necessity of out-of-order processors in the presence of multiple threads of the same program. It is important to notice at this point that the benefits described are totally orthogonal to any other architectural techniques targeting a single thread.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
