    Multimodal information presentation for high-load human computer interaction

    This dissertation addresses the question: given an application and an interaction context, how can interfaces present information to users in a way that improves the quality of interaction (e.g. a better user performance, a lower cognitive demand and a greater user satisfaction)? Information presentation is critical to the quality of interaction because it guides, constrains and even determines cognitive behavior. A good presentation is particularly desired in high-load human computer interactions, such as when users are under time pressure, stress, or are multi-tasking. Under a high mental workload, users may not have the spared cognitive capacity to cope with the unnecessary workload induced by a bad presentation. In this dissertation work, the major presentation factor of interest is modality. We have conducted theoretical studies in the cognitive psychology domain, in order to understand the role of presentation modality in different stages of human information processing. Based on the theoretical guidance, we have conducted a series of user studies investigating the effect of information presentation (modality and other factors) in several high-load task settings. The two task domains are crisis management and driving. Using crisis scenario, we investigated how to presentation information to facilitate time-limited visual search and time-limited decision making. In the driving domain, we investigated how to present highly-urgent danger warnings and how to present informative cues that help drivers manage their attention between multiple tasks. The outcomes of this dissertation work have useful implications to the design of cognitively-compatible user interfaces, and are not limited to high-load applications

    The first version of the “Human factor guidelines for the design of safe in-car traffic information services” was compiled in 2014. In 2016 the guidelines were updated by Connecting Mobility/ DITCM, and the present version is a further update of that version. New systems have been introduced into the marked, and the role of apps on smartphones has increased. This report was updated to include recent developments such as gesture control. The guidelines are aimed at in-car traffic information services

    GETTING ACTIVE WITH PASSIVE CROSSINGS: INVESTIGATING THE EFFICACY OF IN-VEHICLE AUDITORY ALERTS FOR RAIL ROAD CROSSINGS

    Train-vehicle collisions at highway-rail grade crossings continue to be a major issue in the US and across the world. Installing additional hardware at individual crossings is expensive, time consuming, and potentially ineffective. To prevent recent trends in safety improvement from plateauing, experts are turning towards novel warning devices that can be applied to all crossings with minimal cost. In-vehicle auditory alerts (IVAAs) could potentially remedy many of the human factor issues related to crossing safety in a cost effective manner. This thesis presents a series of experiments designing and testing an IVAA system for grade level railroad (RR) crossings. Study 1 collected subjective data on a pool of potential in-vehicle auditory alerts from 31 undergraduate participants. The type of IVAAs was varied along a number of dimensions (pitch, repetition, wave shape, wording, voice, etc.). Results from study 1 were used to design a prototype IVAA crossing notification system. A pilot study was conducted to calibrate the simulated driving scenario featuring multiple RR crossings and a compliance behavior coding procedure. Compliance behavior was operationalized as an amount of visual scanning and pedal depression. Study 2 recruited 20 undergraduate participants to drive in a medium fidelity driving simulator featuring four types of RR crossings with and without IVAAs. Results suggest that IVAAs not only inform and remind drivers of how to comply at RR crossings, but also have a lasting effect on driver behavior after the IVAA is no longer presented. Compliance scores were highest among novel RR crossing visual warnings such as crossbucks featuring STOP or YIELD signs. Compliance was lowest for crossbucks alone and active gates in the off position. IVAAs had the largest impact on compliance scores at crossbucks and gates. The discussion includes implications for designing IVAA systems for RR crossings, and the potential implementation of prototype systems as a smartphone application

    An advanced driver warning framework incorporating educational warnings

The measures currently being taken are not very successful in preventing accidents. To reduce the number of accidents, driver support and warning systems are built. Part of their solution is the use of education, in the form of educational warning systems. However, issuing warnings might distract the driver from the driving task exactly when the stress level is high and immediate action is required. This work concentrates on educational warning systems in the framework of cars and driving. It proposes an innovative design that is demonstrated via a prototype of an educational warning system. One of the main objectives of the research presented here is to test if delaying warnings and feedback (to prevent stress and distraction) improves the learning ability and the performance of drivers using them. Are delayed (educational) warnings superior to immediate warnings? Using the 300M IT Edition, an experiment to test the effects of delayed feedback on the learning process in two driving tasks was carried out. The findings showed significant evidence of better performance overall, while yielding marginal significant of improvement in task understanding, and some indication, although not significant, of faster and stronger improvement in task performance of the delayed feedback group. The main impact of the work is some evidence that delayed warnings in driver learning tasks are superior. More importantly, it is not evident that it is inferior, which makes it preferable to immediate feedback that may distract the driver from the driving task.by Taly Sharon.S.M

    Passing crisis and emergency risk communications: the effects of communication channel, information type, and repetition.

    Three experiments explore several factors which influence information transmission when warning messages are passed from person to person. In Experiment 1, messages were passed down chains of participants using five different modes of communication. Written communication channels resulted in more accurate message transmission than verbal. In addition, some elements of the message endured further down the chain than others. Experiment 2 largely replicated these effects and also demonstrated that simple repetition of a message eliminated differences between written and spoken communication. In a final field experiment, chains of participants passed information however they wanted to, with the proviso that half of the chains could not use telephones. Here, the lack of ability to use a telephone did not affect accuracy, but did slow down the speed of transmission from the recipient of the message to the last person in the chain. Implications of the findings for crisis and emergency risk communication are discussed

    In-Vehicle Dynamic Curve-Speed Warnings at High-Risk Rural Curves

    Lane-departure crashes at horizontal curves represent a significant portion of fatal crashes on rural Minnesota roads. Because of this, solutions are needed to aid drivers in identifying upcoming curves and inform them of a safe speed at which they should navigate the curve. One method for achieving this that avoids costly infrastructure-based methods is to use in-vehicle technology to display dynamic curve-speed warnings to the driver. Such a system would consist of a device located in the vehicle capable of providing a visual and auditory warning to the driver when approaching a potentially hazardous curve at an unsafe speed. This project seeks to determine the feasibility of in-vehicle dynamic curve-speed warnings as deployed on a smartphone app. The system was designed to maximize safety and efficacy to ensure that system warnings are appropriate, timely, and non-distracting to the driver. The developed system was designed and implemented based on the results of a literature survey and a usability study. The developed system was evaluated by 24 Minnesota drivers in a controlled pilot study at the Minnesota Highway Safety and Research Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The results of the pilot study showed that, overall, the pilot study participants liked the system and found it useful. Analysis of quantitative driver behavior metrics showed that when receiving appropriately placed warnings, drivers navigated horizontal curves 8-10% slower than when not using the system. These findings show that such a curve-speed warning system would be useful, effective, and safe for Minnesota drivers
