Power and Channel Allocation for Non-orthogonal Multiple Access in 5G Systems: Tractability and Computation
Network capacity calls for significant increase for 5G cellular systems. A
promising multi-user access scheme, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with
successive interference cancellation (SIC), is currently under consideration.
In NOMA, spectrum efficiency is improved by allowing more than one user to
simultaneously access the same frequency-time resource and separating
multi-user signals by SIC at the receiver. These render resource allocation and
optimization in NOMA different from orthogonal multiple access in 4G. In this
paper, we provide theoretical insights and algorithmic solutions to jointly
optimize power and channel allocation in NOMA. For utility maximization, we
mathematically formulate NOMA resource allocation problems. We characterize and
analyze the problems' tractability under a range of constraints and utility
functions. For tractable cases, we provide polynomial-time solutions for global
optimality. For intractable cases, we prove the NP-hardness and propose an
algorithmic framework combining Lagrangian duality and dynamic programming
(LDDP) to deliver near-optimal solutions. To gauge the performance of the
obtained solutions, we also provide optimality bounds on the global optimum.
Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithmic solution can
significantly improve the system performance in both throughput and fairness
over orthogonal multiple access as well as over a previous NOMA resource
allocation scheme.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, revisio
Uplink CoMP under a Constrained Backhaul and Imperfect Channel Knowledge
Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) is known to be a key technology for next
generation mobile communications systems, as it allows to overcome the burden
of inter-cell interference. Especially in the uplink, it is likely that
interference exploitation schemes will be used in the near future, as they can
be used with legacy terminals and require no or little changes in
standardization. Major drawbacks, however, are the extent of additional
backhaul infrastructure needed, and the sensitivity to imperfect channel
knowledge. This paper jointly addresses both issues in a new framework
incorporating a multitude of proposed theoretical uplink CoMP concepts, which
are then put into perspective with practical CoMP algorithms. This
comprehensive analysis provides new insight into the potential usage of uplink
CoMP in next generation wireless communications systems.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications in February

Stochastic resource allocation with a backhaul constraint for the uplink
We propose a novel stochastic radio resource alloca-
tion strategy for the uplink that achieves long-term fairness in
terms of similar bitrates considering backhaul and air-interface
capacity limitations. We focus on a single cell scenario based
on WCDMA technology. We propose to use a maximin criteria
to introduce fairness among the different users’ throughputs.
An stochastic approximation is implemented to obtain an online
algorithm where the Lagrange multipliers are estimated at each
scheduling period. Our results show that the proposed scheme
achieves higher fairness among the users and, in some cases, a
higher sum-rate compared with the well-known proportional fair
scheduler.Postprint (author's final draft
Distortion Exponent in MIMO Fading Channels with Time-Varying Source Side Information
Transmission of a Gaussian source over a time-varying multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) channel is studied under strict delay constraints.
Availability of a correlated side information at the receiver is assumed, whose
quality, i.e., correlation with the source signal, also varies over time. A
block-fading model is considered for the states of the time-varying channel and
the time-varying side information; and perfect state information at the
receiver is assumed, while the transmitter knows only the statistics. The high
SNR performance, characterized by the \textit{distortion exponent}, is studied
for this joint source-channel coding problem. An upper bound is derived and
compared with lowers based on list decoding, hybrid digital-analog
transmission, as well as multi-layer schemes which transmit successive
refinements of the source, relying on progressive and superposed transmission
with list decoding. The optimal distortion exponent is characterized for the
single-input multiple-output (SIMO) and multiple-input single-output (MISO)
scenarios by showing that the distortion exponent achieved by multi-layer
superpositon encoding with joint decoding meets the proposed upper bound. In
the MIMO scenario, the optimal distortion exponent is characterized in the low
bandwidth ratio regime, and it is shown that the multi-layer superposition
encoding performs very close to the upper bound in the high bandwidth expansion
regime.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
