Improving automation standards via semantic modelling: Application to ISA88
Standardization is essential for automation. Extensibility, scalability, and reusability are important features for automation software that rely in the efficient modelling of the addressed systems. The work presented here is from the ongoing development of a methodology for semi-automatic ontology construction methodology from technical documents. The main aim of this work is to systematically check the consistency of technical documents and support the improvement of technical document consistency. The formalization of conceptual models and the subsequent writing of technical standards are simultaneously analyzed, and guidelines proposed for application to future technical standards. Three paradigms are discussed for the development of domain ontologies from technical documents, starting from the current state of the art, continuing with the intermediate method presented and used in this paper, and ending with the suggested paradigm for the future. The ISA88 Standard is taken as a representative case study. Linguistic techniques from the semi-automatic ontology construction methodology is applied to the ISA88 Standard and different modelling and standardization aspects that are worth sharing with the automation community is addressed. This study discusses different paradigms for developing and sharing conceptual models for the subsequent development of automation software, along with presenting the systematic consistency checking methodPeer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Design, modelling, simulation and integration of cyber physical systems: Methods and applications
The main drivers for the development and evolution of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) are the reduction of development costs and time along with the enhancement of the designed products. The aim of this survey paper is to provide an overview of different types of system and the associated transition process from mechatronics to CPS and cloud-based (IoT) systems. It will further consider the requirement that methodologies for CPS-design should be part of a multi-disciplinary development process within which designers should focus not only on the separate physical and computational components, but also on their integration and interaction. Challenges related to CPS-design are therefore considered in the paper from the perspectives of the physical processes, computation and integration respectively. Illustrative case studies are selected from different system levels starting with the description of the overlaying concept of Cyber Physical Production Systems (CPPSs). The analysis and evaluation of the specific properties of a sub-system using a condition monitoring system, important for the maintenance purposes, is then given for a wind turbine
An autonomous satellite architecture integrating deliberative reasoning and behavioural intelligence
This paper describes a method for the design of autonomous spacecraft, based upon behavioral approaches to intelligent robotics. First, a number of previous spacecraft automation projects are reviewed. A methodology for the design of autonomous spacecraft is then presented, drawing upon both the European Space Agency technological center (ESTEC) automation and robotics methodology and the subsumption architecture for autonomous robots. A layered competency model for autonomous orbital spacecraft is proposed. A simple example of low level competencies and their interaction is presented in order to illustrate the methodology. Finally, the general principles adopted for the control hardware design of the AUSTRALIS-1 spacecraft are described. This system will provide an orbital experimental platform for spacecraft autonomy studies, supporting the exploration of different logical control models, different computational metaphors within the behavioral control framework, and different mappings from the logical control model to its physical implementation
Systematic Comparison of Software Agents and Digital Twins: Differences, Similarities, and Synergies in Industrial Production
To achieve a highly agile and flexible production, it is envisioned that
industrial production systems gradually become more decentralized,
interconnected, and intelligent. Within this vision, production assets
collaborate with each other, exhibiting a high degree of autonomy. Furthermore,
knowledge about individual production assets is readily available throughout
their entire life-cycles. To realize this vision, adequate use of information
technology is required. Two commonly applied software paradigms in this context
are Software Agents (referred to as Agents) and Digital Twins (DTs). This work
presents a systematic comparison of Agents and DTs in industrial applications.
The goal of the study is to determine the differences, similarities, and
potential synergies between the two paradigms. The comparison is based on the
purposes for which Agents and DTs are applied, the properties and capabilities
exhibited by these software paradigms, and how they can be allocated within the
Reference Architecture Model Industry 4.0. The comparison reveals that Agents
are commonly employed in the collaborative planning and execution of production
processes, while DTs typically play a more passive role in monitoring
production resources and processing information. Although these observations
imply characteristic sets of capabilities and properties for both Agents and
DTs, a clear and definitive distinction between the two paradigms cannot be
made. Instead, the analysis indicates that production assets utilizing a
combination of Agents and DTs would demonstrate high degrees of intelligence,
autonomy, sociability, and fidelity. To achieve this, further standardization
is required, particularly in the field of DTs.Comment: Manuscript submitted to Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing,

Survey on Additive Manufacturing, Cloud 3D Printing and Services
Cloud Manufacturing (CM) is the concept of using manufacturing resources in a
service oriented way over the Internet. Recent developments in Additive
Manufacturing (AM) are making it possible to utilise resources ad-hoc as
replacement for traditional manufacturing resources in case of spontaneous
problems in the established manufacturing processes. In order to be of use in
these scenarios the AM resources must adhere to a strict principle of
transparency and service composition in adherence to the Cloud Computing (CC)
paradigm. With this review we provide an overview over CM, AM and relevant
domains as well as present the historical development of scientific research in
these fields, starting from 2002. Part of this work is also a meta-review on
the domain to further detail its development and structure

An agent-based fuzzy cognitive map approach to the strategic marketing planning for industrial firms
This is the post-print version of the final paper published in Industrial Marketing Management. The published article is available from the link below. Changes resulting from the publishing process, such as peer review, editing, corrections, structural formatting, and other quality control mechanisms may not be reflected in this document. Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. Copyright @ 2013 Elsevier B.V.Industrial marketing planning is a typical example of an unstructured decision making problem due to the large number of variables to consider and the uncertainty imposed on those variables. Although abundant studies identified barriers and facilitators of effective industrial marketing planning in practice, the literature still lacks practical tools and methods that marketing managers can use for the task. This paper applies fuzzy cognitive maps (FCM) to industrial marketing planning. In particular, agent based inference method is proposed to overcome dynamic relationships, time lags, and reusability issues of FCM evaluation. MACOM simulator also is developed to help marketing managers conduct what-if scenarios to see the impacts of possible changes on the variables defined in an FCM that represents industrial marketing planning problem. The simulator is applied to an industrial marketing planning problem for a global software service company in South Korea. This study has practical implication as it supports marketing managers for industrial marketing planning that has large number of variables and their cause–effect relationships. It also contributes to FCM theory by providing an agent based method for the inference of FCM. Finally, MACOM also provides academics in the industrial marketing management discipline with a tool for developing and pre-verifying a conceptual model based on qualitative knowledge of marketing practitioners.Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Korea
Eco‐Holonic 4.0 Circular Business Model to Conceptualize Sustainable Value Chain Towards Digital Transition
The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize a circular business model based on an Eco-Holonic Architecture, through the integration of circular economy and holonic principles. A conceptual model is developed to manage the complexity of integrating circular economy principles, digital transformation, and tools and frameworks for sustainability into business models. The proposed architecture is multilevel and multiscale in order to achieve the instantiation of the sustainable value chain in any territory. The architecture promotes the incorporation of circular economy and holonic principles into new circular business models. This integrated perspective of business model can support the design and upgrade of the manufacturing companies in their respective industrial sectors. The conceptual model proposed is based on activity theory that considers the interactions between technical and social systems and allows the mitigation of the metabolic rift that exists between natural and social metabolism. This study contributes to the existing literature on circular economy, circular business models and activity theory by considering holonic paradigm concerns, which have not been explored yet. This research also offers a unique holonic architecture of circular business model by considering different levels, relationships, dynamism and contextualization (territory) aspects
