    A review of information flow diagrammatic models for product-service systems

    A product-service system (PSS) is a combination of products and services to create value for both customers and manufacturers. Modelling a PSS based on function orientation offers a useful way to distinguish system inputs and outputs with regards to how data are consumed and information is used, i.e. information flow. This article presents a review of diagrammatic information flow tools, which are designed to describe a system through its functions. The origin, concept and applications of these tools are investigated, followed by an analysis of information flow modelling with regards to key PSS properties. A case study of selection laser melting technology implemented as PSS will then be used to show the application of information flow modelling for PSS design. A discussion based on the usefulness of the tools in modelling the key elements of PSS and possible future research directions are also presented

    Modelling and controlling traffic behaviour with continuous Petri nets

    Traffic systems are discrete systems that can be heavily populated. One way of overcoming the state explosion problem inherent to heavily populated discrete systems is to relax the discrete model. Continuous Petri nets (PN) represent a relaxation of the original discrete Petri nets that leads to a compositional formalism to model traffic behaviour. This paper introduces some new features of continuous Petri nets that are useful to obtain realistic but compact models for traffic systems. Combining these continuous PN models with discrete PN models of traffic lights leads to a hybrid Petri net model that is appropriate for predicting traffic behaviour, and for designing trac light controllers that minimize the total delay of the vehicles in the system

    Continuous flow Systems and Control Methodology Using Hybrid Petri nets

    International audienceIn this paper, we consider the controller synthesis for continuous flow systems. These lasts are a sub-class of hybrid dynamic systems. Their main characteristics are positiveness and linearity. Transport, manufacturing, communication and biological systems are examples of continuous flow systems. Numerous tools and techniques exist in the literature for modelling and analyzing such systems. As positiveness is a hard constraint, an appropriate tool integrating naturally this constraint is strongly needed. Hybrid Petri Nets are an elegant modeling tool of positive systems, while Hybrid Automata are a powerful tool giving formally the reachable dynamic space. Combining these two tools aim to a sound approach for control synthesis of continuous flow systems. We start by considering the process to control and compute its reachable state space using specialized software like PHAVer. Algebraic inequalities define this reachable state space. The constrained behaviour is obtained by restricting this state space into a smaller desired space. This reduction is expressed in term of linear constraints only over the continuous variables; while the control is given by the discrete transitions (occurrence dates of controllable events). The controller synthesis methodology is based on the control of a hybrid system modelled by a D-elementary hybrid Petri Net. The control consists in modifying the guard of the controllable transitions so as the reachable controlled state space is maximally permissive

    Design and Simulation of a Supervisory Control System for Hybrid Manufacturing

    The research teams of Dr. Bill Hamel, Dr. Bradley Jared and Dr. Tony Schmitz were tasked by the Office of Naval Research to create a hybrid manufacturing process for a reduced scale model of a naval ship propeller. The base structure of the propeller is created using Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), which is then scanned to compare created geometry to desired geometry. The propeller is then machined down to match the desired geometry. This process is iterated upon until the final product meets design tolerances. Due to the complex nature and numerous industrial machines used in the process, it is desirable to create a control system for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA). This supervisory control system is necessary in order to ensure safe operations and logging of system data to document successful trials. The goal of this thesis is to outline the design and simulation of a supervisory control system for this hybrid manufacturing cell. The design and implementation is focused on a simulation of the control of relevant boolean states of the system. This is accomplished through a Human Machine Interface (HMI) created in LabVIEW accompanied by appropriate data flow diagrams, models and communication specifications between machines. The creation of a digital twin of this hybrid manufacturing system was successful and useful in the implementation of physical components

    On Minimum-time Control of Continuous Petri nets: Centralized and Decentralized Perspectives

    Muchos sistemas artificiales, como los sistemas de manufactura, de logística, de telecomunicaciones o de tráfico, pueden ser vistos "de manera natural" como Sistemas Dinámicos de Eventos Discretos (DEDS). Desafortunadamente, cuando tienen grandes poblaciones, estos sistemas pueden sufrir del clásico problema de la explosión de estados. Con la intención de evitar este problema, se pueden aplicar técnicas de fluidificación, obteniendo una relajación fluida del modelo original discreto. Las redes de Petri continuas (CPNs) son una aproximación fluida de las redes de Petri discretas, un conocido formalismo para los DEDS. Una ventaja clave del empleo de las CPNs es que, a menudo, llevan a una substancial reducción del coste computacional. Esta tesis se centra en el control de Redes de Petri continuas temporizadas (TCPNs), donde las transiciones tienen una interpretación temporal asociada. Se asume que los sistemas siguen una semántica de servidores infinitos (velocidad variable) y que las acciones de control aplicables son la disminución de la velocidad del disparo de las transiciones. Se consideran dos interesantes problemas de control en esta tesis: 1) control del marcado objetivo, donde el objetivo es conducir el sistema (tan rápido como sea posible) desde un estado inicial a un estado final deseado, y es similar al problema de control set-point para cualquier sistema de estado continuo; 2) control del flujo óptimo, donde el objetivo es conducir el sistema a un flujo óptimo sin conocimiento a priori del estado final. En particular, estamos interesados en alcanzar el flujo máximo tan rápido como sea posible, lo cual suele ser deseable en la mayoría de sistemas prácticos. El problema de control del marcado objetivo se considera desde las perspectivas centralizada y descentralizada. Proponemos varios controladores centralizados en tiempo mínimo, y todos ellos están basados en una estrategia ON/OFF. Para algunas subclases, como las redes Choice-Free (CF), se garantiza la evolución en tiempo mínimo; mientras que para redes generales, los controladores propuestos son heurísticos. Respecto del problema de control descentralizado, proponemos en primer lugar un controlador descentralizado en tiempo mínimo para redes CF. Para redes generales, proponemos una aproximación distribuida del método Model Predictive Control (MPC); sin embargo en este método no se considera evolución en tiempo mínimo. El problema de control de flujo óptimo (en nuestro caso, flujo máximo) en tiempo mínimo se considera para redes CF. Proponemos un algoritmo heurístico en el que calculamos los "mejores" firing count vectors que llevan al sistema al flujo máximo, y aplicamos una estrategia de disparo ON/OFF. También demostramos que, debido a que las redes CF son persistentes, podemos reducir el tiempo que tarda en alcanzar el flujo máximo con algunos disparos adicionales. Los métodos de control propuestos se han implementado e integrado en una herramienta para Redes de Petri híbridas basada en Matlab, llamada SimHPN

    Simulating Train Dispatching Logic with High-Level Petri Nets

    Railway simulation is commonly used as a tool for planning and analysis of railway traffic in operational, tactical and strategical level. During the simulation, a typical problem is a deadlock, i.e. a specific composition of trains on a simulated section positioned in such a way that they are blocking each other\u27s paths. Deadlock avoidance is very important in the simulation of railways because deadlock can stop the simulation, and significantly affect the simulation results. Simulation of train movements on a single track line requires implantation of additional rules and principles of train spacing and movement as train paths are more often in conflict than on a double track line. A High-level Petri Nets simulation model that detects and manages train path conflicts on a single track railway line is presented. Module for train management is connected to other modules on a hierarchical High-level Petri net. The model was tested on a busy single track mainline between Hrpelje-Kozina and Koper in south-western Slovenia

    Minimum-time control for structurally persistent continuous Petri nets and the application in distributed Control

    In this report, we first address the minimum-time control problem of structurally persistent timed continuous Petri Net systems (ContPN). In particular, an ON-OFF controller is proposed to drive the system from a given initial marking to the final marking in minimum-time. The controller is developed first for the discrete-time system ensuring that all transitions are fired as fast as possible in each sampling period until the required total firing counts are reached. After that, they are stopped suddenly. By taking the limit of the sampling period, the controller for continuous-time systems is obtained. Simplicity and the fact that it ensures minimum-time are the main advantages of the controller. A manufacturing system is taken as case study to illustrate the control strategy. In a distributed controlled system, normally a complex dynamic system, the controllers are not centralized in one location, but are distributed in subsystems. We try to apply the ON-OFF controller into the distributed control of large scale systems modeled with timed continuous Petri net. The original net system is first structurally decompose into smaller subnets through sets of places. Then the ON-OFF controller is applied in controlling each subsystem. Algorithms are proposed to compute admissible control laws for the local subsystems in a distributed way. It is proved that with that control laws, the final state can be reached in minimum time

    Contribution to the evaluation and optimization of passengers' screening at airports

    Security threats have emerged in the past decades as a more and more critical issue for Air Transportation which has been one of the main ressource for globalization of economy. Reinforced control measures based on pluridisciplinary research and new technologies have been implemented at airports as a reaction to different terrorist attacks. From the scientific perspective, the efficient screening of passengers at airports remain a challenge and the main objective of this thesis is to open new lines of research in this field by developing advanced approaches using the resources of Computer Science. First this thesis introduces the main concepts and definitions of airport security and gives an overview of the passenger terminal control systems and more specifically the screening inspection positions are identified and described. A logical model of the departure control system for passengers at an airport is proposed. This model is transcribed into a graphical view (Controlled Satisfiability Graph-CSG) which allows to test the screening system with different attack scenarios. Then a probabilistic approach for the evaluation of the control system of passenger flows at departure is developped leading to the introduction of Bayesian Colored Petri nets (BCPN). Finally an optimization approach is adopted to organize the flow of passengers at departure as best as possible given the probabilistic performance of the elements composing the control system. After the establishment of a global evaluation model based on an undifferentiated serial processing of passengers, is analyzed a two-stage control structure which highlights the interest of pre-filtering and organizing the passengers into separate groups. The conclusion of this study points out for the continuation of this theme

Social and legal pressures have increased the demands for verifying the safety of chemical plants during their design and operation. Complete identification and accurate assessment of the hazard potential in the early design stages is therefore very important so that preventative or protective measures can be integrated into future design without adversely affecting processing and control complexity or capital and operational costs.
