    The Use of a Bony Kernel for CT-Brain in Head Trauma

    A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Medicine in Diagnostic Radiology Johannesburg, 2017.Introduction: Head trauma is a common cause of mortality and computed tomography of the brain (CT-Brain) remains the gold standard investigation for head injuries. Locally a bony kernel is reconstructed routinely in addition to a brain kernel on the assumption that it improves fracture detection. This additional kernel increases scanning time, reporting time and storage required on picture archiving and communication systems (PACS). Aim: The aim was to determine if a bony kernel is superior to a brain kernel for detecting fractures of the skull. Objectives: Objectives were to document patient and fracture characteristics seen locally, to identify patient and fracture characteristics that may require the use of a bony kernel and to determine if the bony kernel needs to be stored on a PACS. Methods: A retrospective study was undertaken. 216 CT-Brains were collected with associated demographic data and mechanisms of injury, attempting to match fracture cases to controls. Two expert readers in consensus formed a gold standard by evaluating all studies. The majority decision between three general readers was then used to test for a difference between the kernels for fracture detection. Results: There was no significant difference in the sensitivity or specificity between the two kernels (p=0.74 and 1.00). Interpersonal violence between adult males and pedestrian vehicle accidents in ambulant children were noted to be common indications for CT-Brain requests locally. Conclusions: The use of only the brain kernel is advised in adults, resulting in decreased scanner time, reporting time and required storage space on PACS. Further research is suggested to investigate its use in younger patients.LG201

    A Framework for a Self-Sustained Traffic Operations System Using V2V Communications

    abstract: This study explores an innovative framework for a self-sustained traffic operations system using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications alone. The proposed framework is envisioned as the foundation to an alternative or supplemental traffic operation and management system, which could be particularly helpful under abnormal traffic conditions caused by unforeseen disasters and special events. Its two major components, a distributed traffic monitoring and platoon information aggregation system and a platoon-based automated intersection control system, are investigated in this study. The distributed traffic monitoring and platoon information aggregation system serves as the foundation. Specifically, each equipped vehicle, through the distributed protocols developed, keeps track of the average traffic density and speed within a certain range, flags itself as micro-discontinuity in traffic if appropriate, and cross-checks its flag status with its immediate up- and down-stream vehicles. The micro-discontinuity flags define vehicle groups with similar traffic states, for initiating and terminating traffic information aggregation. The impact of market penetration rate (MPR) is also investigated with a new methodology for performance evaluation under multiple traffic scenarios. In addition to MPR, the performance of the distributed traffic monitoring and platoon information aggregation system depends on the spatial distribution of equipped vehicles in the road network as well. The latter is affected by traffic dynamics. Traffic signal controls at intersections play a significant role in governing traffic dynamics and will in turn impact the distributed monitoring system. The performance of the monitoring framework is investigated with different g/C ratios under multiple traffic scenarios. With the distributed traffic monitoring and platoon information aggregation system, platoons can be dynamically identified on the network in real time. This enables a platoon-based automated intersection control system for connected and autonomous vehicles. An exploratory study on such a control system with two control stages are proposed. At Stage I, vehicles of each platoon will synchronize into a target speed through cooperative speed harmonization. Then, a platoon of vehicles with the same speed can be treated as a single vehicle for speed profile planning at Stage II. Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 242, 105427. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.applanim.2021.105427Sleep is important for animal health and welfare and there are many factors, for example, the environment, illness, or stress, that are likely to have an impact on cow sleep and consequently affect their welfare. Polysomnography (PSG) is considered the gold standard for precise identification of sleep stages. It consists of electrophysiological recordings of the brain activity, eye movements and muscle activity but is costly and difficult to use with cows on farm. Accordingly, the study of sleep in cows may be limited due to the impracticability of PSG. Alternative methods of assessing sleep have been developed for humans. Some such work has been conducted for cows, but this has yet to be validated with PSG. The main aim of this thesis was to investigate alternative methods to PSG to accurately detect sleep stages in dairy cows. Specifically, I aimed to develop a detailed 5-stage scoring system for assessing sleep stages from the cow PSG, to investigate the suitability of using lying postures and heart rate (HR) measures to assess sleep stages and to develop a model to accurately predict sleep stages using non-invasive measures in dairy cows compared with PSG. Two studies were conducted using 6 non-lactating dairy cows in an indoor housed environment in Scotland, and outdoors at pasture in New Zealand. PSG was recorded with each cow over a period of seven days. From these data a 5-stage sleep-scoring criteria with good reliability was developed which identified two stages of light sleep, two stages of deep sleep as well as awake and rumination stages. Video was recorded during sleep recordings and the cow’s behaviour was analysed and compared with the scored sleep stages from the PSG. Some sleep stages were found to occur mainly in specific lying postures; however, overall, postures were not useful indicators of sleep stages. Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured using a Polar HR monitor ii and data logging device. Differences in the HR and HRV measures were found between the sleep stages, and the patterns of these changes were similar between both Scottish and NZ cows. Finally, machine learning models were developed using supervised learning methods to predict sleep stage from the HR and HRV measures as well as the surface EMG data recorded during PSG. The models were able to learn to recognize and accurately predict sleep stages compared with the PSG scoring. This research demonstrates that non-invasive alternatives can be used to identify sleep stages accurately in dairy cows compared with PSG. Further research is necessary with larger sample sizes and cows of various breeds and life stages; however, the success of the methods developed during this thesis demonstrates their suitability for the future measurement of sleep in cows and in the assessment of cow welfare

    Reduced-complexity Digital Predistortion in Flexible Radio Spectrum Access

    Wireless communications is nowadays seen as one of the main foundations of technological advancements in, e.g., healthcare, education, agriculture, transportation, computing, personal communications, media, and entertainment. This requires major technological developments and advances at different levels of the wireless communication systems and networks. In particular, it is required to utilize the currently available frequency spectrum in a more and more efficient way, while also adopting new spectral bands. Moreover, it is required that cheaper and smaller electronic components are used to build future wireless communication systems to facilitate increasingly cost-effective solutions. Meanwhile, energy efficiency becomes extremely important in wide scale deployments of the networks both from a running cost point of view, and from an environmental impact point of view. This is the big picture, or the so called ‘bird’s eye view’ of the challenges that are yet to be met in this very interesting and fast developing field of science.The power amplifier (PA) is the most power-hungry component in most RF transmitters. Consequently, its energy efficiency significantly contributes to the overall energy efficiency of the transmitter, and in fact the whole wireless network. Unfortunately, energy efficiency enhancement implies operating the PA closer to its saturation region, which typically results in severe nonlinear distortion that can deteriorate the signal quality and cause interference to neighboring users, both of which negatively impact the system spectral efficiency. Moreover, in flexible spectrum access scenarios, which are essential for improving the spectral efficiency, particular in the form of non-contiguous radio spectrum access, the nonlinear distortion due to the PA becomes even more severe and can significantly impact the overall network performance. For example, in noncontiguous carrier aggregation (CA) in LTE-Advanced, it has been demonstrated that in addition to the classical in-band distortion and regrowth around the main carriers, harmful spurious emission components are generated which can easily violate the spurious emission limits even in the case of user equipment (UE) transmitters.Technological advances in the digital electronics domain have enabled us to approach this problem from a digital signal processing point of view in the form of widely-adopted and researched digital predistortion (DPD) technology. However, when the signal bandwidth gets larger, and flexible or non-contiguous spectrum access is introduced, the complexity of the DPD increases and the power consumed in the digital domain by the DPD itself becomes higher and higher, to the extent that it might be close to, or even surpass, the energy savings achieved from using a more efficient PA. The problem becomes even more challenging at the UE side which has relatively limited computational capabilities and lower transmit power. This dilemma can be resolved by developing novel reduced-complexity DPD solutions in such flexible spectrum access and/or wide bandwidth scenarios while not sacrificing the DPD performance, which is the main topic area that this thesis work contributes to.The first contribution of this thesis is the development of a spur-injection based sub-band DPD structure for spurious emission mitigation in noncontiguous transmission scenarios. A novel and effective learning algorithm is also introduced, for the proposed sub-band DPD, based on the decorrelation principle. Mathematical models of the unwanted emissions are formulated based on realistic PA models with memory, followed by developing an efficient DPD structure for mitigating these emissions with reducedcomplexity in both the DPD main processing and learning paths while providing excellent spurious emission suppression. In the special case when the spurious emissions overlap with the own RX band in frequency division duplexing (FDD) transceivers, a novel subband DPD solution is also developed that uses the main RX for DPD learning without requiring any additional observation RX, thus further reducing the DPD complexity.The second contribution is the development of a novel reduced-complexity concurrent DPD, with a single-feedback receiver path, for carrier aggregation-like scenarios. The proposed solution is based on a simple and flexible DPD structure with decorrelationbased parameter learning. Practical simulations and RF measurements demonstrate that the proposed concurrent DPD provides excellent linearization performance, in terms of in-band error vector magnitude (EVM) and adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR), when compared to state-of-the-art concurrent DPD solutions, despite its reduced computational complexity in both the DPD main path processing and parameter learning.The third contribution is the development of a new and novel frequency-optimized DPD solution which can tailor its linearization capabilities to any particular regions of the spectrum. Detailed mathematical expressions of the power spectrum at the PA output as a function of the DPD coefficients are formulated. A Newton-Raphson optimization routine is then utilized to optimize the suppression of unwanted emissions at arbitrary pre-specified frequencies at the PA output. From a complexity reduction perspective, this means that for a given linearization performance at a particular frequency range, an optimized and reduced-complexity DPD can be used.Detailed quantitative complexity analysis, of all the proposed DPD solutions, is performed in this thesis. The complexity and linearization performance are also compared to state-of-the-art DPD solutions in the literature to validate and demonstrate the complexity reduction aspect without sacrificing the linearization performance. Moreover, all the DPD solutions developed in this thesis are tested in practical RF environments using real cellular power amplifiers that are commercially used in the latest wireless communication systems, both at the base station side and at the mobile terminal side. These experiments, along with the strong theoretical foundation of the developed DPD solutions prove that they can be commercially used as such to enhance the performance, energy efficiency, and cost effectiveness of next generation wireless transmitters
