On the Relative Expressiveness of Argumentation Frameworks, Normal Logic Programs and Abstract Dialectical Frameworks
We analyse the expressiveness of the two-valued semantics of abstract
argumentation frameworks, normal logic programs and abstract dialectical
frameworks. By expressiveness we mean the ability to encode a desired set of
two-valued interpretations over a given propositional signature using only
atoms from that signature. While the computational complexity of the two-valued
model existence problem for all these languages is (almost) the same, we show

Abstract Argumentation / Persuasion / Dynamics
The act of persuasion, a key component in rhetoric argumentation, may be
viewed as a dynamics modifier. We extend Dung's frameworks with acts of
persuasion among agents, and consider interactions among attack, persuasion and
defence that have been largely unheeded so far. We characterise basic notions
of admissibilities in this framework, and show a way of enriching them through,
effectively, CTL (computation tree logic) encoding, which also permits
importation of the theoretical results known to the logic into our
argumentation frameworks. Our aim is to complement the growing interest in

Extending Modular Semantics for Bipolar Weighted Argumentation (Technical Report)
Weighted bipolar argumentation frameworks offer a tool for decision support
and social media analysis. Arguments are evaluated by an iterative procedure
that takes initial weights and attack and support relations into account. Until
recently, convergence of these iterative procedures was not very well
understood in cyclic graphs. Mossakowski and Neuhaus recently introduced a
unification of different approaches and proved first convergence and divergence
results. We build up on this work, simplify and generalize convergence results
and complement them with runtime guarantees. As it turns out, there is a
tradeoff between semantics' convergence guarantees and their ability to move
strength values away from the initial weights. We demonstrate that divergence
problems can be avoided without this tradeoff by continuizing semantics.
Semantically, we extend the framework with a Duality property that assures a
symmetric impact of attack and support relations. We also present a Java
implementation of modular semantics and explain the practical usefulness of the
theoretical ideas
Bipolarity in argumentation graphs: Towards a better understanding

Among them, bipolar frameworks make use of both attack and support relations between arguments. However, there is no single interpretation of the support, and the handling of bipolarity cannot avoid a deeper analysis of the notion of support.In this paper we consider three recent proposals for specializing the support relation in abstract argumentation: the deductive support, the necessary support and the evidential support. These proposals have been developed independently within different frameworks. We restate these proposals in a common setting, which enables us to undertake a comparative study of the modellings obtained for the three variants of the support. We highlight relationships and differences between these variants, namely a kind of duality between the deductive and the necessary interpretations of the support
Advanced Algorithms for Abstract Dialectical Frameworks based on Complexity Analysis of Subclasses and SAT Solving
dialectical frameworks (ADFs) constitute one of the most powerful formalisms in abstract argumentation. Their high computational complexity poses, however, certain challenges when designing efficient systems. In this paper, we tackle this issue by (i) analyzing the complexity of ADFs under structural restrictions, (ii) presenting novel algorithms which make use of these insights, and (iii) implementing these algorithms via (multiple) calls to SAT solvers. An empirical evaluation of the resulting implementation on ADF benchmarks generated from ICCMA competitions shows that our solver is able to outperform state-of-the-art ADF systems. Change in abstract bipolar argumentation systems (SUM 2015)
International audienceAn argumentation system can undergo changes (addition or removal of arguments/interactions), particularly in multiagent systems. In this paper, we are interested in dynamics of abstract bipolar argumentation systems, i.e. argumentation systems using two kinds of interaction: attacks and supports. We propose change characterizations that use and extend previous results defined in the case of Dung abstract argumentation systems
An Axiomatic Approach to Support in Argumentation
International audienceIn the context of bipolar argumentation (argumentation with two kinds of interaction, attacks and supports), we present an axiomatic approach for taking into account a special interpretation of the support relation, the necessary support. We propose constraints that should be imposed to a bipolar argumentation system using this interpretation. Some of these constraints concern the new attack relations, others concern acceptability. We extend basic Dungâs framework in different ways in order to propose frameworks suitable for encoding these constraints. By the way, we propose a formal study of properties of necessary support
Towards a Benchmark of Natural Language Arguments
The connections among natural language processing and argumentation theory
are becoming stronger in the latest years, with a growing amount of works going
in this direction, in different scenarios and applying heterogeneous
techniques. In this paper, we present two datasets we built to cope with the
combination of the Textual Entailment framework and bipolar abstract
argumentation. In our approach, such datasets are used to automatically
identify through a Textual Entailment system the relations among the arguments
(i.e., attack, support), and then the resulting bipolar argumentation graphs
are analyzed to compute the accepted arguments
