Society has been very concern about the important of safety and security that leads the manufacturing company to design several of security systems ranging from the simple to complex systems. This report present information on the research involves in Vehicle Surveillance Alarm System, which is purposely design for vehicle security and safety since most of the road transportation lack of security and safety features, which may cause vehicle fatalities that increase from year to year. Hence, the function of the Vehicle Surveillance Alarm System is to trigger an alarm if any abnormal condition happens to inform and alert the vehicle driver about the situation through the use of advance warning messages. This research covers the studies of the application software that involves with manipulating data from the serial port and displaying the data into a proper GUI design. This report features the introduction that explains the background of study, problem statement, significant of the project, objectives and the scope of study of the project research. The author also writes the literature review or theory from several researchers for supporting information or reference to support the project research. The software development methodology use by the author for the project research is taken from several steps of Software Development Life Cycle and Waterfall Model in order to suit the research needs, which also used the concept of static data applied in the prototype. Procedure identification is briefly discussed in order to complete the research and describe tools of hardware and software use to design the product. The author visualize the results of the findings and discusses more details on the serial interface, database storage and GUI interface of the system including the software chosen to accomplish the project of the Vehicle Surveillance Alarm System. The author writes the conclusions and recommendations for further research and future enhancement that includes in the final chapter of the report. The end-result of the research is the static vehicle alarm system software prototype that satisfies the basic needs of vehicle alarm system. The prototype visualize how the vehicle alarm system enables the vehicle driver to be alert by any uncertainty behaviors from the vehicle component, retrieve and view available data of the surveillance history records through the system

An object-oriented view of backend databases in a mobile environment for navy and marine corps applications

A Database Management System (DBMS) is system software for managing a large amount of data in secondary memory. The standard DBMS used today in both industry and the military is the Relational DBMS (RDBMS). The RDBMS is based upon the relational paradigm, whereas modern software development technologies that interact with the RDBMS are based upon the object-oriented paradigm. This difference in paradigms presents a conceptual mismatch which greatly reduces programmer and developer productivity. Additionally, wireless handheld devices have become ubiquitous both in the military and in the community at large. These handheld devices provide a convenient means of information access. To date, the military has failed to capitalize on the use of handheld devices as a convenient means of information access with respect to the large amounts of information stored in its databases. This thesis investigates various database application architectures and proposes an architecture that will not only overcome the conceptual mismatch between the relational and object-oriented paradigms, but also allows handheld device access to the database. A proof-of-concept prototype database application that provides handheld device access to a military personnel database is built to show the viability of the proposed architecture.http://archive.org/details/anobjectoriented109452577Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Efficient AIS Data Processing for Environmentally Safe Shipping

Reducing ship accidents at sea is important to all economic, environmental, and cultural sectors of Greece. Despite an increase in traffic and national monitoring, ships formulate routes according to their best judgment risking an accident. In this study we take a dataset spanning in 3 years from the AIS (Automatic Identification System) network, which is transmitting in public a ship's identity and location with an interval of seconds, and we load it in a trajectory database supported by the Hermes Moving Objects Database (MOD) system. Presented analysis begins by extracting statistics for the dataset, both general (number of ships and position reports) as well as safety related ones. Simple queries on the dataset illustrate the capabilities of Hermes and allow to gain insight on how the ships move in the Greek Seas. Analysis of movement based on an Origin-Destination matrix between interesting areas in the Greek territory is presented. One of the newest challenges that emerged during this process is that the amount of the positioning data is becoming more and more massive. As a conclusion, a preliminary review of possible solutions to this challenge along with others such as dealing with the noise in AIS data is mentioned and we also briefly discuss the need for interdisciplinary cooperation. This research was partially supported by AMINESS project funded by the Greek government (www.aminess.eu). Cyril Ray was supported by a Short Term Scientific Mission performed at the University of Piraeus by the COST Action IC0903 on “Knowledge Discovery from Moving Objects” (http://www.move-cost.info). IMIS Hellas (www.imishel las.gr) kindly provided the AIS dataset for research purposes

Model-driven generative programming for BIS mobile applications

The burst on the availability of smart phones based on the Android platform calls for cost-effective techniques to generate mobile apps for general purpose, distributed business information systems (BIS). To mitigate this problem our research aims at applying model-driven techniques to automatically generate usable prototypes with a sound, maintainable, architecture. Following three base principles: model-based generation, separation of concerns, paradigm seamlessness, we try to answer the main guiding question – how to reduce development time and cost by transforming a given domain model into an Android application? To answer this question we propose to develop an application that follows a generative approach for mobile BIS apps that will mitigate the identified problems. Its input is a platform independent model (PIM), with business rules specified in OCL (Object Constraint Language). We adopted the Design Science Research methodology, that helps gaining problem understanding, identifying systemically appropriate solutions, and in effectively evaluating new and innovative solutions. To better evaluate our solution, besides resorting to third party tools to test specific components integration, we demonstrated its usage and evaluated how well it mitigates a subset of the identified problems in an observational study (we presented our generated apps to an outside audience in a controlled environment to study our model-based centered and, general apps understandability) and communicated its effectiveness to researchers and practitioners.O grande surto de disponibilidade de dispositivos móveis para a plataforma Android requer, técnicas generativas de desenvolvimento de aplicações para sistemas comuns e/ou distribuídos de informação empresariais/negócio, que otimizem a relação custo-benefício.
