Smartphone-based geolocation of Internet hosts
The location of Internet hosts is frequently used in distributed applications and networking services. Examples include customized advertising, distribution of content, and position-based security. Unfortunately the relationship between an IP address and its position is in general very weak. This motivates the study of measurement-based IP geolocation techniques, where the position of the target host is actively estimated using the delays between a number of landmarks and the target itself. This paper discusses an IP geolocation method based on crowdsourcing where the smartphones of users operate as landmarks. Since smartphones rely on wireless connections, a specific delay-distance model was derived to capture the characteristics of this novel operating scenario
Enhancing distributed systems through web services
The concept of Web Services has, throughout the last few years, become one of the most discussed in the academic, as well as the business world. Many hail it as a revolutionary concept, while others look at it in a sceptic manner. The fact remains that the developers of the most diffused programming languages are giving great importance to integrating and supporting the creation and utilisation of Web Services. The main advantage of Web Services is that they are based completely on XML, which gives them a very high degree of flexibility and, above all, platform independence. Systems written using one particular language, can transparently access exposed services on other systems written using different languages. This particular feature of Web Services puts them in an ideal position to be utilised as the driving force behind distributed systems. The Internet is a jungle of computers, each with their particular features, operating system and hardware platform. Such a scenario makes it very difficult to create a system, distributed over various machines, which easily adapts to such an environment and communicates with other machines in this environment. Using Web Services, this problem is naturally solved. This project aims at analysing the ways in which Web Services may be used to enhance distributed systems over the Internet framework. There are various issues which should be considered, including the software required and the security of data being transmitted.peer-reviewe
Management and Service-aware Networking Architectures (MANA) for Future Internet Position Paper: System Functions, Capabilities and Requirements
Future Internet (FI) research and development threads have recently been gaining momentum all over the world and as such the international race to create a new generation Internet is in full swing: GENI, Asia Future Internet, Future Internet Forum Korea, European Union Future Internet Assembly (FIA). This is a position paper identifying the research orientation with a time horizon of 10 years, together with the key challenges for the capabilities in the Management and Service-aware Networking Architectures (MANA) part of the Future Internet (FI) allowing for parallel and federated Internet(s)
Context-Awareness Enhances 5G Multi-Access Edge Computing Reliability
The fifth generation (5G) mobile telecommunication network is expected to
support Multi- Access Edge Computing (MEC), which intends to distribute
computation tasks and services from the central cloud to the edge clouds.
Towards ultra-responsive, ultra-reliable and ultra-low-latency MEC services,
the current mobile network security architecture should enable a more
decentralized approach for authentication and authorization processes. This
paper proposes a novel decentralized authentication architecture that supports
flexible and low-cost local authentication with the awareness of context
information of network elements such as user equipment and virtual network
functions. Based on a Markov model for backhaul link quality, as well as a
random walk mobility model with mixed mobility classes and traffic scenarios,
numerical simulations have demonstrated that the proposed approach is able to
achieve a flexible balance between the network operating cost and the MEC
reliability.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Access on Feb. 02, 201
Middleware Technologies for Cloud of Things - a survey
The next wave of communication and applications rely on the new services
provided by Internet of Things which is becoming an important aspect in human
and machines future. The IoT services are a key solution for providing smart
environments in homes, buildings and cities. In the era of a massive number of
connected things and objects with a high grow rate, several challenges have
been raised such as management, aggregation and storage for big produced data.
In order to tackle some of these issues, cloud computing emerged to IoT as
Cloud of Things (CoT) which provides virtually unlimited cloud services to
enhance the large scale IoT platforms. There are several factors to be
considered in design and implementation of a CoT platform. One of the most
important and challenging problems is the heterogeneity of different objects.
This problem can be addressed by deploying suitable "Middleware". Middleware
sits between things and applications that make a reliable platform for
communication among things with different interfaces, operating systems, and
architectures. The main aim of this paper is to study the middleware
technologies for CoT. Toward this end, we first present the main features and
characteristics of middlewares. Next we study different architecture styles and
service domains. Then we presents several middlewares that are suitable for CoT
based platforms and lastly a list of current challenges and issues in design of
CoT based middlewares is discussed.Comment: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352864817301268,

Cross-middleware Interoperability in Distributed Concurrent Engineering
Secure, distributed collaboration between different organizations is a key challenge in Grid computing today. The GDCD project has produced a Grid-based demonstrator Virtual Collaborative Facility (VCF) for the European Space Agency. The purpose of this work is to show the potential of Grid technology to support fully distributed concurrent design, while addressing practical considerations including network security, interoperability, and integration of legacy applications. The VCF allows domain engineers to use the concurrent design methodology in a distributed fashion to perform studies for future space missions. To demonstrate the interoperability and integration capabilities of Grid computing in concurrent design, we developed prototype VCF components based on ESA’s current Excel-based Concurrent Design Facility (a non-distributed environment), using a STEP-compliant database that stores design parameters. The database was exposed as a secure GRIA 5.1 Grid service, whilst a .NET/WSE3.0-based library was developed to enable secure communication between the Excel client and STEP database
Policy based roles for distributed systems security
Distributed systems are increasingly being used in commercial environments necessitating the development of trustworthy and reliable security mechanisms. There is often no clear informal or formal specification of enterprise authorisation policies and no tools to translate policy specifications to access control implementation mechanisms such as capabilities or Access Control Lists. It is thus difficult to analyse the policy to detect conflicts or flaws and it is difficult to verify that the implementation corresponds to the policy specification. We present in this paper a framework for the specification of management policies. We are concerned with two types of policies: obligations which specify what activities a manager or agent must or must not perform on a set of target objects and authorisations which specify what activities a subject (manager or agent) can or can not perform on the set of target objects. Management policies are then grouped into roles reflecting the organisation..
