    Handling Defeasibilities in Action Domains

    Representing defeasibility is an important issue in common sense reasoning. In reasoning about action and change, this issue becomes more difficult because domain and action related defeasible information may conflict with general inertia rules. Furthermore, different types of defeasible information may also interfere with each other during the reasoning. In this paper, we develop a prioritized logic programming approach to handle defeasibilities in reasoning about action. In particular, we propose three action languages {\cal AT}^{0}, {\cal AT}^{1} and {\cal AT}^{2} which handle three types of defeasibilities in action domains named defeasible constraints, defeasible observations and actions with defeasible and abnormal effects respectively. Each language with a higher superscript can be viewed as an extension of the language with a lower superscript. These action languages inherit the simple syntax of {\cal A} language but their semantics is developed in terms of transition systems where transition functions are defined based on prioritized logic programs. By illustrating various examples, we show that our approach eventually provides a powerful mechanism to handle various defeasibilities in temporal prediction and postdiction. We also investigate semantic properties of these three action languages and characterize classes of action domains that present more desirable solutions in reasoning about action within the underlying action languages.Comment: 49 pages, 1 figure, to be appeared in journal Theory and Practice Logic Programmin

    Accepting the natural order of rules in a logic program with preferences

    Preference is a natural part of common sense reasoning. It allows us to select preferred conclusions from broader range of alternative conclusions. It is typically specified on parts of conclusions or on rules. Different semantics have been proposed that deal with preference on rules. None fully meets our requirements. We are interested in a descriptive approach to preference handling in logic programs under answer set semantics that always selects preferred answer set when standard one exists. Existing semantics that meet this criterion also give non intuitive conclusions on some programs. We think this kind of problem is related to the problem of not accepting natural order of rules induced by underlying answer set semantics. Our goal is to define semantics that would always select preferred answer set when standard one exists, accept natural order on rules, and satisfy principles for preference handling

    Statistical modeling techniques, specifically regression line analysis have become important analytical tools and are contributing immensely to the field of epidemiology. However, many users do not understand their effective use and applications. Underlying epidemiological concepts and not the statistics should govern or justify the proper use and application of any modeling exercise. Main utility of the regression line analysis lies in its ability to provide a general but practical conceptual framework for casual problems, explaining and evaluating the role of biases, confounders and effect modifiers. Successful modeling of complex data is a part science, part statistics and part experience, but the major part is logic or common sense. Findings of this research article focuses on the contributions of regression analysis towards the pedagogical study of epidemiological models by enhancing the research process and serving as an effective tool for communicating findings to public health managers and policymakers and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration

    Based on the foundational aspects which have been discussed as consequences of ongoing research on loop quantum gravity in the first part of this paper, the holistic aspects of the latter are discussed in this second part, aiming at a consistent and systematic approach to eventually model a hierarchically ordered architecture of the world which is encompassing all of what there actually is. The idea is to clarify the explicit relationship between physics and philosophy on the one hand, and philosophy and the sciences in general, on the other. It is shown that the ontological determination of worldliness is practically identical with its epistemological determination so that the (scientific) activity of modelling and representing the world can be visualized itself as a (worldly) mode of being.Comment: 20 page
