Pattern-Avoiding Involutions: Exact and Asymptotic Enumeration

We consider the enumeration of pattern-avoiding involutions, focusing in particular on sets defined by avoiding a single pattern of length 4. As we demonstrate, the numerical data for these problems demonstrates some surprising behavior. This strange behavior even provides some very unexpected data related to the number of 1324-avoiding permutations

    Combinatorial operads from monoids

    Get PDF
We introduce a functorial construction which, from a monoid, produces a set-operad. We obtain new (symmetric or not) operads as suboperads or quotients of the operads obtained from usual monoids such as the additive and multiplicative monoids of integers and cyclic monoids. They involve various familiar combinatorial objects: endofunctions, parking functions, packed words, permutations, planar rooted trees, trees with a fixed arity, Schr\"oder trees, Motzkin words, integer compositions, directed animals, and segmented integer compositions. We also recover some already known (symmetric or not) operads: the magmatic operad, the associative commutative operad, the diassociative operad, and the triassociative operad. We provide presentations by generators and relations of all constructed nonsymmetric operads.Comment: 42 pages. Complete version of the extended abstracts arXiv:1208.0920 and arXiv:1208.092

The Brownian limit of separable permutations

We study random uniform permutations in an important class of pattern-avoiding permutations: the separable permutations. We describe the asymptotics of the number of occurrences of any fixed given pattern in such a random permutation in terms of the Brownian excursion. In the recent terminology of permutons, our work can be interpreted as the convergence of uniform random separable permutations towards a "Brownian separable permuton".Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures, incorporating referee's suggestion

We enumerate the pattern class Av(2143, 4231) and completely describe its permutations. The main tools are simple permutations and monotone grid classes

Next-to-Leading Order Transport Coefficients from the Four-Particle Irreducible Effective Action

Transport coefficients can be obtained from 2-point correlators using the Kubo formulae. It has been shown that the full leading order result for electrical conductivity and (QCD) shear viscosity is contained in the re-summed 2-point function that is obtained from the 3-loop 3PI re-summed effective action. The theory produces all leading order contributions without the necessity for power counting, and in this sense it provides a natural framework for the calculation. In this article we study the 4-loop 4PI effective action for a scalar theory with cubic and quartic interactions in the presence of spontaneous symmetry breaking. We obtain a set of integral equations that determine the re-summed 2-point vertex function. A next-to-leading order contribution to the viscosity could be obtained from this set of coupled equations.Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures. Added references and minor rewordings: published versio

Operads from posets and Koszul duality

    Get PDF
We introduce a functor As{\sf As} from the category of posets to the category of nonsymmetric binary and quadratic operads, establishing a new connection between these two categories. Each operad obtained by the construction As{\sf As} provides a generalization of the associative operad because all of its generating operations are associative. This construction has a very singular property: the operads obtained from As{\sf As} are almost never basic. Besides, the properties of the obtained operads, such as Koszulity, basicity, associative elements, realization, and dimensions, depend on combinatorial properties of the starting posets. Among others, we show that the property of being a forest for the Hasse diagram of the starting poset implies that the obtained operad is Koszul. Moreover, we show that the construction As{\sf As} restricted to a certain family of posets with Hasse diagrams satisfying some combinatorial properties is closed under Koszul duality.Comment: 40 page
