Ubiquitous Internet in an integrated satellite-terrestrial environment: The SUITED solution
yesThe current Internet architecture appears to
not be particularly suited to addressing the
emerging needs of new classes of users who wish
to gain access to multimedia services made available
by ISPs, regardless of their location, while
in motion and with a guaranteed level of quality.
One of the main objectives of so-called nextgeneration
systems is to overcome the limitations
of todayÂżs available Internet by adopting an
approach based on the integration of different
mobile and fixed networks. The SUITED project
moves in this direction since it aims at contributing
to the design and deployment of the global
mobile broadband system (GMBS), a unique
satellite/terrestrial infrastructure ensuring
nomadic users access to Internet services with a
negotiated QoS. A description of the main features
of the GMBS architecture, characterized
by the integration of a multisegment access network
with a federated ISP network is given in
this article. The GMBS multimode terminal is
schematically described, and an overview of the
so-called QoS-aware mobility management
scheme, devised for such a heterogeneous scenario,is provided
An analysis on decentralized adaptive MAC protocols for Cognitive Radio networks
The scarcity of bandwidth in the radio spectrum has become more vital since the demand for more and more wireless applications has increased. Most of the spectrum bands have been allocated although many studies have shown that these bands are significantly underutilized most of the time. The problem of unavailability of spectrum and inefficiency in its utilization has been smartly addressed by the Cognitive Radio (CR) Technology which is an opportunistic network that senses the environment, observes the network changes, and then using knowledge gained from the prior interaction with the network, makes intelligent decisions by dynamically adapting their transmission characteristics. In this paper some of the decentralized adaptive MAC protocols for CR networks have been critically analyzed and a novel adaptive MAC protocol for CR networks, DNG-MAC which is decentralized and non-global in nature, has been proposed. The results show the DNG-MAC out performs other CR MAC protocols in terms of time and energy efficiency
Uncoordinated access schemes for the IoT: approaches, regulations, and performance
Internet of Things (IoT) devices communicate using a variety of protocols,
differing in many aspects, with the channel access method being one of the most
important. Most of the transmission technologies explicitly designed for IoT
and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication use either an ALOHA-based channel
access or some type of Listen Before Talk (LBT) strategy, based on carrier
sensing. In this paper, we provide a comparative overview of the uncoordinated
channel access methods for IoT technologies, namely ALOHA-based and LBT
schemes, in relation with the ETSI and FCC regulatory frameworks. Furthermore,
we provide a performance comparison of these access schemes, both in terms of
successful transmissions and energy efficiency, in a typical IoT deployment.
Results show that LBT is effective in reducing inter-node interference even for
long-range transmissions, though the energy efficiency can be lower than that
provided by ALOHA methods. The adoption of rate-adaptation schemes,
furthermore, lowers the energy consumption while improving the fairness among
nodes at different distances from the receiver. Coexistence issues are also
investigated, showing that in massive deployments LBT is severely affected by
the presence of ALOHA devices in the same area
Interworking Architectures in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks: An Algorithmic Overview
The scarce availability of spectrum and the proliferation of
smartphones, social networking applications, online gaming
etc., mobile network operators (MNOs) are faced with an
exponential growth in packet switched data requirements on
their networks. Haven invested in legacy systems (such as
HSPA, WCDMA, WiMAX, Cdma2000, LTE, etc.) that have
hitherto withstood the current and imminent data usage
demand, future and projected usage surpass the capabilities of the evolution of these individual technologies. Hence, a more critical, cost-effective and flexible approach to provide ubiquitous coverage for the user using available spectrum is of high demand. Heterogeneous Networks make use of these legacy systems by allowing users to connect to the best network available and most importantly seamlessly handover active sessions amidst them. This paper presents a survey of interworking architectures between IMT 2000 candidate networks that employ the use of IEFT protocols such as MIP, mSCTP, HIP, MOBIKE, IKEV2 and SIP etc. to bring about this much needed capacity
Reducing Message Collisions in Sensing-based Semi-Persistent Scheduling (SPS) by Using Reselection Lookaheads in Cellular V2X
In the C-V2X sidelink Mode 4 communication, the sensing-based semi-persistent
scheduling (SPS) implements a message collision avoidance algorithm to cope
with the undesirable effects of wireless channel congestion. Still, the current
standard mechanism produces high number of packet collisions, which may hinder
the high-reliability communications required in future C-V2X applications such
as autonomous driving. In this paper, we show that by drastically reducing the
uncertainties in the choice of the resource to use for SPS, we can
significantly reduce the message collisions in the C-V2X sidelink Mode 4.
Specifically, we propose the use of the "lookahead," which contains the next
starting resource location in the time-frequency plane. By exchanging the
lookahead information piggybacked on the periodic safety message, vehicular
user equipments (UEs) can eliminate most message collisions arising from the
ignorance of other UEs' internal decisions. Although the proposed scheme would
require the inclusion of the lookahead in the control part of the packet, the
benefit may outweigh the bandwidth cost, considering the stringent reliability
requirement in future C-V2X applications.Comment: Submitted to MDPI Sensor
