BER Performance of IM/DD FSO System with OOK using APD Receiver
In this paper, the performance of intensity-modulated with direct detection (IM/DD) free space optical (FSO) system using the on-off keying (OOK) and avalanche photodiode (APD) receiver is observed. The gamma-gamma model is used to describe the effect of atmospheric turbulence since it provides good agreement in the wide range of atmospheric conditions. In addition, the same FSO system with equal gain combining applied at the reception is analyzed. After theoretical derivation of the expression for the bit error rate (BER), the numerical integration with previously specified relative calculation error is performed. Numerical results are presented and confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations. The effects of the FSO link and receiver parameters on the BER performance are discussed. The results illustrate that the optimal APD gain in the minimum BER sense depends considerably on the link distance, atmospheric turbulence strength and receiver temperature. In addition, the value of this optimal gain is slightly different in the case of spatial diversity application compared with single channel reception
Source-Channel Diversity for Parallel Channels
We consider transmitting a source across a pair of independent, non-ergodic
channels with random states (e.g., slow fading channels) so as to minimize the
average distortion. The general problem is unsolved. Hence, we focus on
comparing two commonly used source and channel encoding systems which
correspond to exploiting diversity either at the physical layer through
parallel channel coding or at the application layer through multiple
description source coding.
For on-off channel models, source coding diversity offers better performance.
For channels with a continuous range of reception quality, we show the reverse
is true. Specifically, we introduce a new figure of merit called the distortion
exponent which measures how fast the average distortion decays with SNR. For
continuous-state models such as additive white Gaussian noise channels with
multiplicative Rayleigh fading, optimal channel coding diversity at the
physical layer is more efficient than source coding diversity at the
application layer in that the former achieves a better distortion exponent.
Finally, we consider a third decoding architecture: multiple description
encoding with a joint source-channel decoding. We show that this architecture
achieves the same distortion exponent as systems with optimal channel coding
diversity for continuous-state channels, and maintains the the advantages of
multiple description systems for on-off channels. Thus, the multiple
description system with joint decoding achieves the best performance, from
among the three architectures considered, on both continuous-state and on-off
channels.Comment: 48 pages, 14 figure
MMSE Optimal Algebraic Space-Time Codes
Design of Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) for Maximum Likelihood (ML)
reception has been predominantly the main focus of researchers. However, the ML
decoding complexity of STBCs becomes prohibitive large as the number of
transmit and receive antennas increase. Hence it is natural to resort to a
suboptimal reception technique like linear Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE)
receiver. Barbarossa et al and Liu et al have independently derived necessary
and sufficient conditions for a full rate linear STBC to be MMSE optimal, i.e
achieve least Symbol Error Rate (SER). Motivated by this problem, certain
existing high rate STBC constructions from crossed product algebras are
identified to be MMSE optimal. Also, it is shown that a certain class of codes
from cyclic division algebras which are special cases of crossed product
algebras are MMSE optimal. Hence, these STBCs achieve least SER when MMSE
reception is employed and are fully diverse when ML reception is employed.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, journal version to appear in IEEE Transactions on

Novel Method for Improving the Capacity of Optical MIMO System Using MGDM
In current local area networks, multimode fibers (MMFs), primarily graded index (GI) MMFs, are the main types of fibers employed for data communications. Due to their enormous bandwidth, it is considered that they are the main channel medium that can offer broadband multiservices using optical multiplexing techniques. Amongst these, mode group diversity multiplexing (MGDM) has been proposed as a way to integrate various services over an MMF network by exciting different groups of modes that can be used as independent and parallel communication channels. In this paper, we study optical multiple-input–multiple-output (O-MIMO) systems using MGDM techniques while also optimizing the launching conditions of light at the fiber inputs and the spot size, radial offset, angular offset, wavelength, and the radii of the segment areas of the detectors. We propose a new approach based on the optimization of launching and detection conditions in order to increase the capacity of an O-MIMO link using the MGDM technique. We propose a (3 3) O-MIMO system, where our simulation results show significant improvement in GI MMFs' capacity compared with existing O-MIMO systems.

Rooftop and indoor reception with transmit diversity applied to DVB-T networks: A long term measurement campaign
Although transmit Delay Diversity (DD) can
provide a gain in indoor and other Non Line of Sight situations (NLOS), it can introduce degradation in rooftop reception. In fact, when the Ricean K factor of the channel
is significantly high (e.g. Line of Sight reception), the channel performs similar to an AWGN channel where the performance degrades due to DD that artificially increase
the fading. This paper investigates through practical evaluation the impacts of Transmit DD on LOS and NLOS stationary reception. Then, it studies 2 techniques to reduce the degradation performance in LOS while aiming
to keep the same diversity gain in NLOS receptio
