The linearization problem of a binary quadratic problem and its applications
We provide several applications of the linearization problem of a binary
quadratic problem. We propose a new lower bounding strategy, called the
linearization-based scheme, that is based on a simple certificate for a
quadratic function to be non-negative on the feasible set. Each
linearization-based bound requires a set of linearizable matrices as an input.
We prove that the Generalized Gilmore-Lawler bounding scheme for binary
quadratic problems provides linearization-based bounds. Moreover, we show that
the bound obtained from the first level reformulation linearization technique
is also a type of linearization-based bound, which enables us to provide a
comparison among mentioned bounds. However, the strongest linearization-based
bound is the one that uses the full characterization of the set of linearizable
matrices. Finally, we present a polynomial-time algorithm for the linearization
problem of the quadratic shortest path problem on directed acyclic graphs. Our
algorithm gives a complete characterization of the set of linearizable matrices
for the quadratic shortest path problem
Lift-and-Round to Improve Weighted Completion Time on Unrelated Machines
We consider the problem of scheduling jobs on unrelated machines so as to
minimize the sum of weighted completion times. Our main result is a
-approximation algorithm for some fixed , improving upon the
long-standing bound of 3/2 (independently due to Skutella, Journal of the ACM,
2001, and Sethuraman & Squillante, SODA, 1999). To do this, we first introduce
a new lift-and-project based SDP relaxation for the problem. This is necessary
as the previous convex programming relaxations have an integrality gap of
. Second, we give a new general bipartite-rounding procedure that produces

Higher-order Projected Power Iterations for Scalable Multi-Matching
The matching of multiple objects (e.g. shapes or images) is a fundamental
problem in vision and graphics. In order to robustly handle ambiguities, noise
and repetitive patterns in challenging real-world settings, it is essential to
take geometric consistency between points into account. Computationally, the
multi-matching problem is difficult. It can be phrased as simultaneously
solving multiple (NP-hard) quadratic assignment problems (QAPs) that are
coupled via cycle-consistency constraints. The main limitations of existing
multi-matching methods are that they either ignore geometric consistency and
thus have limited robustness, or they are restricted to small-scale problems
due to their (relatively) high computational cost. We address these
shortcomings by introducing a Higher-order Projected Power Iteration method,
which is (i) efficient and scales to tens of thousands of points, (ii)
straightforward to implement, (iii) able to incorporate geometric consistency,
(iv) guarantees cycle-consistent multi-matchings, and (iv) comes with
theoretical convergence guarantees. Experimentally we show that our approach is
superior to existing methods
