    On automatic actions retrieval of martial arts

    [[abstract]]Martial art actions can be represented via VRML animations or extracted by video tracking. We propose an action retrieval method, which allows users to retrieve similar martial art actions. The mechanism is based on a similarity function that compares animation tracks. A representation of the human skeleton includes head, knee, elbow, wrist, etc and further aggregates important features in martial art actions. Different weights are dynamically calculated according to motion sensitivity of feature points. As a result, the system can automatically retrieve similar martial art actions.     Ontologies are today being applied in almost every field to support the alignment and retrieval of data of distributed provenance. Here we focus on new ontological work on dance and on related cultural phenomena belonging to what UNESCO calls the “intangible heritage.” Currently data and information about dance, including video data, are stored in an uncontrolled variety of ad hoc ways. This serves not only to prevent retrieval, comparison and analysis of the data, but may also impinge on our ability to preserve the data that already exists. Here we explore recent technological developments that are designed to counteract such problems by allowing information to be retrieved across disciplinary, cultural, linguistic and technological boundaries. Software applications such as the ones envisaged here will enable speedier recovery of data and facilitate its analysis in ways that will assist both archiving of and research on dance

    The recognition of martial arts movements with the aid of computers has become crucial because of the vigorous promotion of martial arts education in schools in China to support the national essence and the inclusion of martial arts as a physical education test item in the secondary school examination in Shanghai. In this paper, the fundamentals of background difference algorithms are examined and a systematic analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of various background difference algorithms is presented. Background difference algorithm solutions are proposed for a number of common, challenging problems. The empty background is then automatically extracted using a symmetric disparity approach that is proposed for the initialization of background disparity in three-dimensional (3D) photos of martial arts action. It is possible to swiftly remove and manipulate the background, even in intricate martial arts action recognition scenarios. According to the experimental findings, the algorithm's optimized model significantly enhances the foreground segmentation effect of the backdrop disparity in 3D photos of martial arts action. The use of features such as texture probability is coupled to considerably enhance the shadow elimination effect for the shadow problem of background differences

    Multi-sensor human action recognition with particular application to tennis event-based indexing

    The ability to automatically classify human actions and activities using vi- sual sensors or by analysing body worn sensor data has been an active re- search area for many years. Only recently with advancements in both fields and the ubiquitous nature of low cost sensors in our everyday lives has auto- matic human action recognition become a reality. While traditional sports coaching systems rely on manual indexing of events from a single modality, such as visual or inertial sensors, this thesis investigates the possibility of cap- turing and automatically indexing events from multimodal sensor streams. In this work, we detail a novel approach to infer human actions by fusing multimodal sensors to improve recognition accuracy. State of the art visual action recognition approaches are also investigated. Firstly we apply these action recognition detectors to basic human actions in a non-sporting con- text. We then perform action recognition to infer tennis events in a tennis court instrumented with cameras and inertial sensing infrastructure. The system proposed in this thesis can use either visual or inertial sensors to au- tomatically recognise the main tennis events during play. A complete event retrieval system is also presented to allow coaches to build advanced queries, which existing sports coaching solutions cannot facilitate, without an inordi- nate amount of manual indexing. The event retrieval interface is evaluated against a leading commercial sports coaching tool in terms of both usability and efficiency

    When does Retrieval Induce Forgetting and When does it Induce Facilitation? Implications for Retrieval Inhibition, Testing Effect, and Text Processing

    Retrieval practice can enhance long-term retention of the tested material (the testing effect), but it can also impair later recall of the nontested material – a phenomenon known as retrieval-induced forgetting (Anderson, M. C., Bjork, R. A., & Bjork, E. L. (1994). Remembering can cause forgetting: retrieval dynamics in long-term memory. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 20(5), 1063–1087). Recent research, however, has shown that retrieval practice can sometimes improve later recall of the nontested material – a phenomenon termed retrieval-induced facilitation (Chan, J. C. K., McDermott, K. B., & Roediger, H. L. (2006). Retrieval-induced facilitation: initially nontested material can benefit from prior testing of related material. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 135, 553–571). What drives these different effects? Two experiments were designed to examine the conditions under which retrieval induces forgetting and facilitation. Two variables, the level of integration invoked during encoding and the length of delay between retrieval practice and final test, were revealed as critical factors in determining whether testing facilitated or hindered later retrieval of the nontested information. A text processing framework is advanced to account for these findings
