Photonic integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an on-chip reference arm for optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, three-dimensional imaging modality with several medical and industrial applications. Integrated photonics has the potential to enable mass production of OCT devices to significantly reduce size and cost, which can increase its use in established fields as well as enable new applications. Using silicon nitride (Si(3)N(4)) and silicon dioxide (SiO(2)) waveguides, we fabricated an integrated interferometer for spectrometer-based OCT. The integrated photonic circuit consists of four splitters and a 190 mm long reference arm with a foot-print of only 10 × 33 mm(2). It is used as the core of a spectral domain OCT system consisting of a superluminescent diode centered at 1320 nm with 100 nm bandwidth, a spectrometer with 1024 channels, and an x-y scanner. The sensitivity of the system was measured at 0.25 mm depth to be 65 dB with 0.1 mW on the sample. Using the system, we imaged human skin in vivo. With further optimization in design and fabrication technology, Si(3)N(4)/SiO(2) waveguides have a potential to serve as a platform for passive photonic integrated circuits for OCT
A Spectral CT Method to Directly Estimate Basis Material Maps From Experimental Photon-Counting Data
The proposed spectral CT method solves the constrained one-step spectral CT reconstruction (cOSSCIR) optimization problem to estimate basis material maps while modeling the nonlinear X-ray detection process and enforcing convex constraints on the basis map images. In order to apply the optimization-based reconstruction approach to experimental data, the presented method empirically estimates the effective energy-window spectra using a calibration procedure. The amplitudes of the estimated spectra were further optimized as part of the reconstruction process to reduce ring artifacts. A validation approach was developed to select constraint parameters. The proposed spectral CT method was evaluated through simulations and experiments with a photon-counting detector. Basis material map images were successfully reconstructed using the presented empirical spectral modeling and cOSSCIR optimization approach. In simulations, the cOSSCIR approach accurately reconstructed the basis map images
Generalized overlap quantum state tomography
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a quantum state tomography protocol
that generalizes the Wallentowitz-Vogel-Banaszek-W\'odkiewicz point-by-point
Wigner function reconstruction. The full density operator of an arbitrary
quantum state is efficiently reconstructed in the Fock basis, using
semidefinite programming, after interference with a small set of calibrated
coherent states. This new protocol is resource- and computationally efficient,
is robust against noise, does not rely on approximate state displacements, and
ensures the physicality of results.Comment: 19 pages, 10 Figure
Spatio-angular Minimum-variance Tomographic Controller for Multi-Object Adaptive Optics systems
Multi-object astronomical adaptive-optics (MOAO) is now a mature wide-field
observation mode to enlarge the adaptive-optics-corrected field in a few
specific locations over tens of arc-minutes.
The work-scope provided by open-loop tomography and pupil conjugation is
amenable to a spatio-angular Linear-Quadratic Gaussian (SA-LQG) formulation
aiming to provide enhanced correction across the field with improved
performance over static reconstruction methods and less stringent computational
complexity scaling laws.
Starting from our previous work [1], we use stochastic time-progression
models coupled to approximate sparse measurement operators to outline a
suitable SA-LQG formulation capable of delivering near optimal correction.
Under the spatio-angular framework the wave-fronts are never explicitly
estimated in the volume, providing considerable computational savings on
10m-class telescopes and beyond.
We find that for Raven, a 10m-class MOAO system with two science channels,
the SA-LQG improves the limiting magnitude by two stellar magnitudes when both
Strehl-ratio and Ensquared-energy are used as figures of merit. The
sky-coverage is therefore improved by a factor of 5.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Applied Optic
Blur resolved OCT: full-range interferometric synthetic aperture microscopy through dispersion encoding
We present a computational method for full-range interferometric synthetic
aperture microscopy (ISAM) under dispersion encoding. With this, one can
effectively double the depth range of optical coherence tomography (OCT),
whilst dramatically enhancing the spatial resolution away from the focal plane.
To this end, we propose a model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) method,
where ISAM is directly considered in an optimization approach, and we make the
discovery that sparsity promoting regularization effectively recovers the
full-range signal. Within this work, we adopt an optimal nonuniform discrete
fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) implementation of ISAM, which is both fast and
numerically stable throughout iterations. We validate our method with several
complex samples, scanned with a commercial SD-OCT system with no hardware
modification. With this, we both demonstrate full-range ISAM imaging, and
significantly outperform combinations of existing methods.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures. The images have been compressed for arxiv -

Regularized Newton Methods for X-ray Phase Contrast and General Imaging Problems
Like many other advanced imaging methods, x-ray phase contrast imaging and
tomography require mathematical inversion of the observed data to obtain
real-space information. While an accurate forward model describing the
generally nonlinear image formation from a given object to the observations is
often available, explicit inversion formulas are typically not known. Moreover,
the measured data might be insufficient for stable image reconstruction, in
which case it has to be complemented by suitable a priori information. In this
work, regularized Newton methods are presented as a general framework for the
solution of such ill-posed nonlinear imaging problems. For a proof of
principle, the approach is applied to x-ray phase contrast imaging in the
near-field propagation regime. Simultaneous recovery of the phase- and
amplitude from a single near-field diffraction pattern without homogeneity
constraints is demonstrated for the first time. The presented methods further
permit all-at-once phase contrast tomography, i.e. simultaneous phase retrieval
and tomographic inversion. We demonstrate the potential of this approach by
three-dimensional imaging of a colloidal crystal at 95 nm isotropic resolution.Comment: (C)2016 Optical Society of America. One print or electronic copy may
