    In the multi-core and multiprocessor domain, there has been considerable work done on scheduling techniques assuming that real-time tasks are independent. In practice a typical real-time system usually share logical resources among tasks. However, synchronization in the multiprocessor area has not received enough attention. In this paper we investigate the possibilities of extending multiprocessor hierarchical scheduling to support an existing synchronization protocol (FMLP) in multiprocessor systems.     Predictable Implementation of Real-Time Applications on Multiprocessor Systems on Chip

    Worst-case execution time (WCET) analysis and, in general, the predictability of real-time applications implemented on multiprocessor systems has been addressed only in very restrictive and particular contexts. One important aspect that makes the analysis difficult is the estimation of the system\u27s communication behavior. The traffic on the bus does not solely originate from data transfers due to data dependencies between tasks, but is also affected by memory transfers as result of cache misses. As opposed to the analysis performed for a single processor system, where the cache miss penalty is constant, in a multiprocessor system each cache miss has a variable penalty, depending on the bus contention. This affects the tasks\u27 WCET which, however, is needed in order to perform system scheduling. At the same time, the WCET depends on the system schedule due to the bus interference. In this context, we present an approach to worst-case execution time analysis and system scheduling for real-time applications implemented on multiprocessor SoC architectures. We will also address the bus scheduling policy and its optimization, which are of huge importance for the performance of such predictable multiprocessor applications

    Simulation of Multiprocessor System Scheduling

    The speed and performance of computers have become a major concern today. Multiprocessor systems are introduced to share the work load between the processors. By sharing the work load among processors, the speed and efficiency of the system can be increased drastically. To share the workload properly between the processors in the multiprocessor system a proper scheduling algorithm is needed. Hence, one of the major factors that influence the speed and efficiency of the multiprocessor system is scheduling. In this thesis, the main focus is on the process scheduling for multiprocessor systems. The factors which influence scheduling and scheduling algorithms are discussed. Based on this idea of sharing the load among processors in the multiprocessor system, a simulation model for scheduling in a symmetric multiprocessor system is developed in the Department of Digital and Computer systems at Tampere University of Technology. This model treats all the processors in the system equally by allocating equal processor time for all the processes in the task and also evaluates the total execution time of the system for processing an input job. The scheduling algorithm in this simulation model is based on the input processes priority. The necessity of scheduling in multiprocessor systems is elaborated. The goal of this thesis is to analyse how process scheduling influences the speed of the multiprocessor system. Also, the difference in total execution time of the input jobs with different number of processors and capacity of the processors in the multiprocessor system is studied

    Schedulability analysis of timed CSP models using the PAT model checker

    Timed CSP can be used to model and analyse real-time and concurrent behaviour of embedded control systems. Practical CSP implementations combine the CSP model of a real-time control system with prioritized scheduling to achieve efficient and orderly use of limited resources. Schedulability analysis of a timed CSP model of a system with respect to a scheduling scheme and a particular execution platform is important to ensure that the system design satisfies its timing requirements. In this paper, we propose a framework to analyse schedulability of CSP-based designs for non-preemptive fixed-priority multiprocessor scheduling. The framework is based on the PAT model checker and the analysis is done with dense-time model checking on timed CSP models. We also provide a schedulability analysis workflow to construct and analyse, using the proposed framework, a timed CSP model with scheduling from an initial untimed CSP model without scheduling. We demonstrate our schedulability analysis workflow on a case study of control software design for a mobile robot. The proposed approach provides non-pessimistic schedulability results

    Framework for Simulation of Heterogeneous MpSoC for Design Space Exploration

    Due to the ever-growing requirements in high performance data computation, multiprocessor systems have been proposed to solve the bottlenecks in uniprocessor systems. Developing efficient multiprocessor systems requires effective exploration of design choices like application scheduling, mapping, and architecture design. Also, fault tolerance in multiprocessors needs to be addressed. With the advent of nanometer-process technology for chip manufacturing, realization of multiprocessors on SoC (MpSoC) is an active field of research. Developing efficient low power, fault-tolerant task scheduling, and mapping techniques for MpSoCs require optimized algorithms that consider the various scenarios inherent in multiprocessor environments. Therefore there exists a need to develop a simulation framework to explore and evaluate new algorithms on multiprocessor systems. This work proposes a modular framework for the exploration and evaluation of various design algorithms for MpSoC system. This work also proposes new multiprocessor task scheduling and mapping algorithms for MpSoCs. These algorithms are evaluated using the developed simulation framework. The paper also proposes a dynamic fault-tolerant (FT) scheduling and mapping algorithm for robust application processing. The proposed algorithms consider optimizing the power as one of the design constraints. The framework for a heterogeneous multiprocessor simulation was developed using SystemC/C++ language. Various design variations were implemented and evaluated using standard task graphs. Performance evaluation metrics are evaluated and discussed for various design scenarios
