    AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends

    The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques. Firstly, this paper introduces the application background and development process of the artificial neural network in order to clarify the research context of neural networks. Five branches and related applications of single-layer perceptron, linear neural network, BP neural network, Hopfield neural network, and depth neural network are analyzed in detail. The analysis shows that the development trend of the artificial neural network is developing towards a more general, flexible, and intelligent direction.     Replication in Mobile Ad-hoc Network using Hopfield Network

    Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a network comprises of mobile nodes connected without any centralized administration. Each node in the network has the ability to share a large number of objects with other nodes. The nodes are connected with other nodes to forward a message to other nodes until the search for node that desire meets. This paper represents a new replication method to recover the performance in distributed system. Objects are replicated on different nodes in the network to minimize the search for an object. It is observed that mobility of nodes predicted using SOM (Self Organizing Maps) technique provides less accuracy. This paper represents an algorithm that uses the network parameters as input condition to replicate objects into the nodes. The decision for each node will be taken by gathering the input conditions and feed to the Hopfield Neural Network. It is view that it will provide more accuracy and improve the performance

    The Office of Space Communications (OSC) is tasked by NASA to conduct a planning process to meet NASA's science mission and other communications and data processing requirements. A set of technology trend studies was undertaken by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for OSC to identify quantitative data that can be used to predict performance of electronic equipment in the future to assist in the planning process. Only commercially available, off-the-shelf technology was included. For each technology area considered, the current state of the technology is discussed, future applications that could benefit from use of the technology are identified, and likely future developments of the technology are described. The impact of each technology area on NASA operations is presented together with a discussion of the feasibility and risk associated with its development. An approximate timeline is given for the next 15 to 25 years to indicate the anticipated evolution of capabilities within each of the technology areas considered. This volume contains four chapters: one each on technology trends for database systems, computer software, neural and fuzzy systems, and artificial intelligence.     The field of artificial intelligence is currently experiencing relentless growth, with innumerable models emerging in the research and development phases across various fields, including science, finance, and engineering. In this work, the authors review a large number of learning techniques aimed at project management. The analysis is largely focused on hybrid systems, which present computational models of blended learning techniques. At present, these models are at a very early stage and major efforts in terms of development is required within the scientific community. In addition, we provide a classification of all the areas within project management and the learning techniques that are used in each, presenting a brief study of the different artificial intelligence techniques used today and the areas of project management in which agents are being applied. This work should serve as a starting point for researchers who wish to work in the exciting world of artificial intelligence in relation to project leadership and management
