A Pragmatic Approach for the Semantic Description and Matching of Pervasive Resources
The increasing popularity of personal wireless devices has raised new demands for the efficient discovery of heterogeneous devices and services in pervasive environments. With the advancement of the electronic world, the diversity of available services is increasing rapidly. %This raises new demands for the efficient discovery and location of heterogeneous services and resources in dynamically changing environments. Traditional approaches for service discovery describe services at a syntactic level and the matching mechanisms available for these approaches are limited to syntactic comparisons based on attributes or interfaces. In order to overcome these limitations, there has been an increased interest in the use of semantic description and matching techniques to support effective service discovery. In this paper, we present a semantic matching approach to facilitate the discovery of device-based services in pervasive environments. The approach includes a ranking mechanism that orders services according to their suitability and also considers priorities placed on individual requirements in a request during the matching process. The solution has been systematically evaluated for its retrieval effectiveness and the results have shown that the matcher results agree reasonably well with human judgement. Another important practical concern is the efficiency and the scalability of the semantic matching solution. Therefore, we have evaluated the scalability of the proposed solution by investigating the variation in matching time in response to increasing numbers of advertisements and increasing request sizes, and have presented the empirical results
A pragmatic approach to semantic repositories benchmarking
The aim of this paper is to benchmark various semantic repositories in order to evaluate their deployment in a commercial image retrieval and browsing application. We adopt a two-phase approach for evaluating the target semantic repositories: analytical parameters such as query language and reasoning support are used to select the pool of the target repositories, and practical parameters such as load and query response times are used to select the best match to application requirements. In addition to utilising a widely accepted benchmark for OWL repositories (UOBM), we also use a real-life dataset from the target application, which provides us with the opportunity of consolidating our findings. A distinctive advantage of this benchmarking study is that the essential requirements for the target system such as the semantic expressivity and data scalability are clearly defined, which allows us to claim contribution to the benchmarking methodology for this class of applications
Towards MKM in the Large: Modular Representation and Scalable Software Architecture
MKM has been defined as the quest for technologies to manage mathematical
knowledge. MKM "in the small" is well-studied, so the real problem is to scale
up to large, highly interconnected corpora: "MKM in the large". We contend that
advances in two areas are needed to reach this goal. We need representation
languages that support incremental processing of all primitive MKM operations,
and we need software architectures and implementations that implement these
operations scalably on large knowledge bases.
We present instances of both in this paper: the MMT framework for modular
theory-graphs that integrates meta-logical foundations, which forms the base of
the next OMDoc version; and TNTBase, a versioned storage system for XML-based
document formats. TNTBase becomes an MMT database by instantiating it with
special MKM operations for MMT.Comment: To appear in The 9th International Conference on Mathematical

Ontology-based composition and matching for dynamic cloud service coordination
Recent cross-organisational software service offerings, such as cloud computing, create higher integration needs.
In particular, services are combined through brokers and mediators, solutions to allow individual services to collaborate and their interaction to be coordinated are required. The need to address dynamic management - caused by cloud and on-demand environments - can be addressed through service coordination based on ontology-based composition and matching techniques. Our solution to composition and matching utilises a service coordination space that acts as a passive infrastructure for collaboration where users submit requests that are then selected and taken on by providers. We discuss the information models and the coordination principles of such a collaboration environment in terms of an ontology and its underlying description logics. We provide ontology-based solutions for structural composition of descriptions and matching between requested and provided services
MOSDEN: A Scalable Mobile Collaborative Platform for Opportunistic Sensing Applications
Mobile smartphones along with embedded sensors have become an efficient
enabler for various mobile applications including opportunistic sensing. The
hi-tech advances in smartphones are opening up a world of possibilities. This
paper proposes a mobile collaborative platform called MOSDEN that enables and
supports opportunistic sensing at run time. MOSDEN captures and shares sensor
data across multiple apps, smartphones and users. MOSDEN supports the emerging
trend of separating sensors from application-specific processing, storing and
sharing. MOSDEN promotes reuse and re-purposing of sensor data hence reducing
the efforts in developing novel opportunistic sensing applications. MOSDEN has
been implemented on Android-based smartphones and tablets. Experimental
evaluations validate the scalability and energy efficiency of MOSDEN and its
suitability towards real world applications. The results of evaluation and
lessons learned are presented and discussed in this paper.Comment: Accepted to be published in Transactions on Collaborative Computing,
