    Context-aware task scheduling in distributed computing systems

    These days, the popularity of technologies such as machine learning, augmented reality, and big data analytics is growing dramatically. This leads to a higher demand of computational power not only for IT professionals but also for ordinary device users who benefit from new applications. At the same time, the computational performance of end-user devices increases to meet the demands of these resource-hungry applications. As a result, there is a coexistence of a huge demand of computational power on the one side and a large pool of computational resources on the other side. Bringing these two sides together is the idea of computational resource sharing systems which allow applications to forward computationally intensive workload to remote resources. This technique is often used in cloud computing where customers can rent computational power. However, we argue that not only cloud resources can be used as offloading targets. Rather, idle CPU cycles from end-user administered devices at the edge of the network can be spontaneously leveraged as well. Edge devices, however, are not only heterogeneous in their hardware and software capabilities, they also do not provide any guarantees in terms of reliability or performance. Does it mean that either the applications that require further guarantees or the unpredictable resources need to be excluded from such a sharing system? In this thesis, we propose a solution to this problem by introducing the Tasklet system, our approach for a computational resource sharing system. The Tasklet system supports computation offloading to arbitrary types of devices, including stable cloud instances as well as unpredictable end-user owned edge resources. Therefore, the Tasklet system is structured into multiple layers. The lowest layer is a best-effort resource sharing system which provides lightweight task scheduling and execution. Here, best-effort means that in case of a failure, the task execution is dropped and that tasks are allocated to resources randomly. To provide execution guarantees such as a reliable or timely execution, we add a Quality of Computation (QoC) layer on top of the best-effort execution layer. The QoC layer enforces the guarantees for applications by using a context-aware task scheduler which monitors the available resources in the computing environment and performs the matchmaking between resources and tasks based on the current state of the system. As edge resources are controlled by individuals, we consider the fact that these users need to be able to decide with whom they want to share their resources and for which price. Thus, we add a social layer on top of the system that allows users to establish friendship connections which can then be leveraged for social-aware task allocation and accounting of shared computation

    A Study of Ethics in Crowd Work-Based Research

    Crowd work as a form of a social-technical system has become a popular setting for conducting and distributing academic research. Crowd work platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) are widely used by academic researchers. Recent scholarship has highlighted the importance of ethical issues because they could affect the long-term development and application of crowd work in various fields such as the gig economy. However, little study or deliberation has been conducted on the ethical issues associated with academic research in this context. Current sources for ethical research practice, such as the Belmont Report, have not been examined thoroughly on how they should be applied to tackle the ethical issues in crowd work-based research such as those in data collection and usage. Hence, how crowd work-based research should be conducted to make it respectful, beneficent, and just is still an open question. This dissertation research has pursued this open question by interviewing 15 academic researchers and 17 IRB directors and analysts in terms of their perceptions and reflections on ethics in research on MTurk; meanwhile, it has analyzed 15 research guidelines and consent templates for research on MTurk and 14 published papers from the interviewed scholars. Based on analyzing these different sources of data, this dissertation research has identified three dimensions of ethics in crowd work-based research, including ethical issues in payment, data, and human subjects. This dissertation research also uncovered the “original sin” of these ethical issues and discussed its impact in academia, as well as the limitations of the Belmont Report and AoIR Ethical Guidelines 3.0 for Internet Research. The findings and implications of this research can help researchers and IRBs be more conscious about ethics in crowd work-based research and also inspire academic associations such as AoIR to develop ethical guidelines that can address these ethical issues

    Money That Costs Too Much: Regulating Financial Incentives

    Money may not corrupt. But should we worry if it corrodes? Legal scholars in a range of fields have expressed concern about “motivational crowding-out,” a process by which offering financial rewards for good behavior may undermine laudable social motivations, like professionalism or civic duty. Disquiet about the motivational impacts of incentives has now extended to health law, employment law, tax, torts, contracts, criminal law, property, and beyond. In some cases, the fear of crowding-out has inspired concrete opposition to innovative policies that marshal incentives to change individual behavior. But to date, our fears about crowding-out have been unfocused and amorphous; our field lacks the language we need to speak precisely about these behavioral phenomena, and we have not examined when and why motivational crowding-out should prompt us to discontinue or temper incentive-based schemes. Without a clear and nuanced picture of the processes, harms, and benefits of crowding-out, we may well be missing the mark. This Article canvasses the range of legal areas where crowding-out concerns arise, and it newly illuminates the specific harms that may be attributable to crowding-out effects. These hazards include reduced autonomy in the presence of incentives, a distinct set of behavioral inefficiencies, and the potential degradation of individual or social values. But this Article also challenges the view of crowding-out as uniformly harmful, offering an alternative vision of potential crowding-out benefits, such as crowding out invidious motivations, increasing the predictability of agent activity, and bolstering the efficiency of future incentives. These benefits suggest that the precautionary principle, which would counsel against using incentives where crowding-out is possible—is inappropriate for this field. The Article also proposes a novel taxonomy to help guide regulatory responses to incentives that cause crowding-out. Different categories of incentives present different justifications for regulatory intervention and redesign, including autonomy concerns, efficiency concerns, and negative externalities imposed on third parties. By organizing incentives based on the relationship between the principal and agent, we can identify opportunities for regulators and incentive architects to redesign or limit incentive programs, to leave incentives in place, or to consider discontinuing incentive-based policies when money indeed “costs too much” in motivation.     Crowdsourcing hypothesis tests: making transparent how design choices shape research results

    To what extent are research results influenced by subjective decisions that scientists make as they design studies? Fifteen research teams independently designed studies to answer five original research questions related to moral judgments, negotiations, and implicit cognition. Participants from 2 separate large samples (total N > 15,000) were then randomly assigned to complete 1 version of each study. Effect sizes varied dramatically across different sets of materials designed to test the same hypothesis: Materials from different teams rendered statistically significant effects in opposite directions for 4 of 5 hypotheses, with the narrowest range in estimates being d = -0.37 to + 0.26. Meta-analysis and a Bayesian perspective on the results revealed overall support for 2 hypotheses and a lack of support for 3 hypotheses. Overall, practically none of the variability in effect sizes was attributable to the skill of the research team in designing materials, whereas considerable variability was attributable to the hypothesis being tested. In a forecasting survey, predictions of other scientists were significantly correlated with study results, both across and within hypotheses.     COLLABORATIVE SCIENCE ACROSS THE GLOBE: THE INFLUENCE OF MOTIVATION AND CULTURE ON VOLUNTEERS IN THE UNITED STATES, INDIA, AND COSTA RICA.

    Reliance on volunteer participation for collaborative scientific projects has become extremely popular in the past decade. Cutting across disciplines, locations, and participation practices, hundreds of thousands of people all over the world are now involved in these studies, and are advancing tasks that scientists cannot accomplish alone. Although existing projects have demonstrated the value of involving volunteers to collect data, few projects have been successful in maintaining volunteer involvement over long periods of time. Therefore, it is important to understand the unique motivations of volunteers and their effect on participation practices, so that effective partnerships between volunteers and scientists can be established. This study provides a first look into the relationship between motivation and culture in the context of ecology-focused collaborative scientific projects around the world. Projects in three distinct cultures - the United States, India, and Costa Rica - were examined by triangulating qualitative and quantitative methods followed by a cross-cultural comparison. The findings reveal a temporal process of participation that is highly dependent on motivation and culture. Initial participation stems in most cases from self-directed motivations. However, as time progresses, the motivational process becomes more complex and includes both self-directed motivations and collaborative motivations. In addition, motivation is strongly modulated by local cultural norms, expectations, and practices. Collaborative and scientific cultures also have an impact throughout the course of the volunteers' participation. This research provides theoretical and practical contributions: its findings extend current understanding of theories of motivation by showing the connection between culture and motivation, and demonstrate how cultural effects lie at the core of motivation and participation practices in volunteer-based collaborative scientific projects. These findings will also inform scientists, project leaders, educators, administrators, and designers on ways to entice and maintain long-term volunteer participation in collaborative scientific projects that are situated in different cultures

    "This book explores the potential creation of a broader collaborative economy through commons-based peer production (P2P) and the emergent role of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The book seeks to critically engage in the political discussion of commons-based peer production, which can be classified into three basic arguments: the liberal, the reformist and the anti-capitalist. This book categorises the liberal argument as being in favour of the coexistence of the commons with the market and the state. Reformists, on the other hand, advocate for the gradual adjustment of the state and of capitalism to the commons, while anti-capitalists situate the commons against capitalism and the state. By discussing these three viewpoints, the book contributes to contemporary debates concerning the future of commons-based peer production. Further, the author argues that for the commons to become a fully operational mode of peer production, it needs to reach critical mass arguing that the liberal argument underestimates the reformist insight that technology has the potential to decentralise production, thereby forcing capitalism to transition to post-capitalism. Surveying the three main strands of commons-based peer production, this book makes the case for a post-capitalist commons-orientated transition that moves beyond neoliberalism.

    Mapping South African internet user's opinions about the use of peer-to-peer file sharing technology to infringe on copyrighted films and/or television series content

    The aim of this study was to investigate the various reasons consumers continue to infringe on copyrighted content, specifically in the South African context, even if the law forbids it. This investigation is two-fold since it also recognises that there are many individuals who do not infringe on copyrighted content even though they have access to peer-to-peer file sharing technology. This information could prove valuable since it can then be used to find comprehensive market-led solutions to the problem that targets the end-user. This study adopted a mixed method approach in order to cross validate findings and to reveal aspects of empirical reality. The target population for this study consisted of 100 adult South Africans who have access to the internet. Data was collected through an online, self-administered questionnaire. Quantitative data was analysed through descriptive statistics, while qualitative data was analysed through thematic analysis. The results show that there are variety of factors that influence respondents’ attitudes towards copyright infringement of films and/or television series through peer-to-peer file sharing technology, each of which is discussed in detail. The study concluded by identifying 24 factors that favourably influence people’s attitudes towards copyright infringement, including high prices of legitimate goods, historical inequality in South Africa, and perceived low risk of being caught and punished. Based on the conclusion above, the study recommends that policy makers such as government officials, boards of directors, managers, committees, and executives use the results of the study when making decisions and determining policies, especially in the South African context.Communication ScienceM.A. (Communication Science

    The purpose of this study was to recognize the decrease in retention of African American college students. What are some of the reasons for a decrease in retention and what do the leaders do about it? Leadership can develop and implement to recruit and increase retention of some of these African American academic students. The college dropout rates on college campuses overall are 40%, with 30% of these students being freshman and sophomores. The theoretical framework for this study is based on the expectancy theory of motivation which is a process theory of motivation (Vroom, 1964). An individual\u27s motivation (Valence) is affected by how much they value any reward associated with an action. An individual\u27s motivation is affected by their expectations of the future and its bounty. The individual’s expectancy will motivate them to put more effort into something that they may perceive will be able to generate good results. The goal of this study is to increase the retention of African American college students through leadership strategies and practices. The study\u27s design and methodology instrument used for the findings were a theoretical framework based on the expectancy theory of motivation and a development theory of step-by-step reasoning toward motivation (Vroom, 1964).
