The Use of Online Panel Data in Management Research: A Review and Recommendations
Management scholars have long depended on convenience samples to conduct research involving human participants. However, the past decade has seen an emergence of a new convenience sample: online panels and online panel participants. The data these participants provideâonline panel data (OPD)âhas been embraced by many management scholars owing to the numerous benefits it provides over âtraditionalâ convenience samples. Despite those advantages, OPD has not been warmly received by all. Currently, there is a divide in the field over the appropriateness of OPD in management scholarship. Our review takes aim at the divide with the goal of providing a common understanding of OPD and its utility and providing recommendations regarding when and how to use OPD and how and where to publish it. To accomplish these goals, we inventoried and reviewed OPD use across 13 management journals spanning 2006 to 2017. Our search resulted in 804 OPD-based studies across 439 articles. Notably, our search also identified 26 online panel platforms (âbrokersâ) used to connect researchers with online panel participants. Importantly, we offer specific guidance to authors, reviewers, and editors, having implications for both micro and macro management scholars
The operationalized psychodynamic diagnostics system. Clinical relevance, reliability and validity
In this paper, we present a multiaxial system for psychodynamic diagnosis, which has attained wide usage in Germany in the last 10 years. First we will discuss the 4 operationalized psychodynamic diagnostics (OPD) axes: illness experience and treatment assumptions, relationships, mental conflicts, and structure, then clinical applications will be outlined. Focus psychodynamic formulations can be employed both with inpatients and with outpatients. Studies show good reliability in a research context and acceptable reliability for clinical purposes. Validity will be separately summarized as content, criterion, and construct validity. Validity studies indicate good validity for the individual axes. Numerous studies on the OPD indicate areas of possible improvement, for example for clinical purposes the OPD should be more practically formulated
Organic Photodiodes with an Extended Responsivity using Ultrastrong Light-Matter Coupling
In organic photodiodes (OPDs) light is absorbed by excitons, which dissociate
to generate photocurrent. Here, we demonstrate a novel type of OPD in which
light is absorbed by polaritons, hybrid light-matter states. We demonstrate
polariton OPDs operating in the ultra-strong coupling regime at visible and
infrared wavelengths. These devices can be engineered to show narrow
responsivity with a very weak angle-dependence. More importantly, they can be
tuned to operate in a spectral range outside that of the bare exciton
absorption. Remarkably, we show that the responsivity of a polariton OPD can be
pushed to near infrared wavelengths, where few organic absorbers are available,
with external quantum efficiencies exceeding those of a control OPD
Levels of Structural Integration Mediate the Impact of Metacognition on Functioning in Non-affective Psychosis: Adding a Psychodynamic Perspective to the Metacognitive Approach
Synthetic metacognition is defined by integrative and contextualizing processes of discrete reflexive moments. These processes are supposed to be needed to meet intrapsychic as well as interpersonal challenges and to meaningfully include psychotic experience in a personal life narrative. A substantial body of evidence has linked this phenomenon to psychosocial functioning and treatment options were developed. The concept of synthetic metacognition, measured with the Metacognition Assessment Scale-Abbreviated (MAS-A), rises hope to bridge gaps between therapeutic orientations and shares valuable parallels to modern psychodynamic constructs, especially the 'levels of structural integration' of the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis (OPD-2). As theoretical distinctions remain, aim of this study was to compare the predictive value of both constructs with regard to psychosocial functioning of patients with non-affective psychoses, measured with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (MINI-ICF-APP). It was further explored if levels of structural integration (OPD-LSIA) would mediate the impact of metacognition (MAS-A) on function (MINI-ICF-APP). Expert ratings of synthetic metacognition (MAS-A), the OPD-2 'levels of structural integration' axis (OPD-LSIA), psychosocial functioning (MINI-ICF-APP) and assessments of general cognition and symptoms were applied to 100 individuals with non-affective psychoses. Whereas both, MAS-A and OPD-LSIA, significantly predicted MINI-ICF-APP beyond cognition and symptoms, OPD-LSIA explained a higher share of variance and mediated the impact of MAS-A on MINI-ICF-APP. Levels of structural integration, including the quality of internalized object representations and unconscious interpersonal schemas, might therefore be considered as valuable predictors of social functioning and as one therapeutic focus in patients with non-affective psychoses. Structural integration might go beyond and form the base of a person's actual reflexive and metacognitive capabilities. Psychotherapeutic procedures specific for psychoses may promote and challenge a patient's metacognitive capacities, but should equally take the need for maturing structural skills into account. Modern psychodynamic approaches to psychosis are shortly presented, providing concepts and techniques for the implicit regulation of interpersonal experience and aiming at structural integration in this patient group
Ray and Wave Aberrations Revisited: A Huygens-Like Construction yields Exact Relations
The optical aberrations of a system can be described in terms of the wave
aberrations, defined as the departure from the ideal spherical wavefront; or
the ray aberrations, which are in turn the deviations from the paraxial ray
intersection measured in the image plane. The classical connection between the
two descriptions is an approximation, the error of which has, so far, not been
quantified analytically. We derive exact analytical equations for computing the
wavefront surface, the aberrated ray directions, and the transverse ray
aberrations in terms of the wave aberrations (OPD) and the reference sphere. We
introduce precise conditions for a function to be an OPD function, show that
every such function has an associated wavefront, and study the error arising
from the classical approximation. We establish strict conditions for the error
to be small. We illustrate our results with numerical simulations. Our results
show that large numerical apertures and high-frequency OPD functions yield
larger approximation errors.Comment: 12 pages, 10 Figures, JOSA A, vol. 33, no.
Use of hospital services by age and comorbidity after an index heart failure admission in England: an observational study
© Published by the BMJ Publishing Group Limited. Objectives To describe hospital inpatient, emergency department (ED) and outpatient department (OPD) activity for patients in the year following their first emergency admission for heart failure (HF). To assess the proportion receiving specialist assessment within 2Ăą âŹ...weeks of hospital discharge, as now recommended by guidelines. Design Observational study of national administrative data. Setting All acute NHS hospitals in England. Participants 82Ăą âŹ...241 patients with an index emergency admission between April 2009 and March 2011 with a primary diagnosis of HF. Main outcome measures Cardiology OPD appointment within 2Ăą âŹ...weeks and within a year of discharge from the index admission; emergency department (ED) and inpatient use within a year. Results 15.1% died during the admission. Of the 69Ăą âŹ...848 survivors, 19.7% were readmitted within 30Ăą âŹ...days and half within a year, the majority for non-HF diagnoses. 6.7% returned to the ED within a week of discharge, of whom the majority (77.6%) were admitted. The two most common OPD specialties during the year were cardiology (24.7% of the total appointments) and anticoagulant services (12.5%). Although half of all patients had a cardiology appointment within a year, the proportion within the recommended 2Ăą âŹ...weeks of discharge was just 6.8% overall and varied by age, from 2.4% in those aged 90+ to 19.6% in those aged 18-45 (p<0.0001); appointments in other specialties made up only some of the shortfall. More comorbidity at any age was associated with higher rates of cardiology OPD follow-up. Conclusions Patients with HF are high users of hospital services. Postdischarge cardiology OPD follow-up rates fell well below current National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines, particularly for the elderly and those with less comorbidity
Universal scaling of the order-parameter distribution in strongly disordered superconductors
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the statistical properties of
the inhomogeneous order-parameter distribution (OPD) at the verge of the
superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). We find within two prototype
fermionic and bosonic models for disordered superconductors that one can
identify a universal rescaling of the OPD. By performing scanning-tunneling
microscopy experiments in three samples of NbN with increasing disorder we show
that such a rescaling describes also with an excellent accuracy the
experimental data. These results can provide a breakthrough in our
understanding of the SIT.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, revised version submitted to PR
