A Systematic Study of the Behaviour of PMEPR in Relation to OFDM Design Parameters
The design of systems with enhanced quality of service (QoS) and improved power efficiency has evolved into an intensive research area in wired and wireless communications engineering. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been proven to have the potential to achieve high data rates, adapt to severe channel conditions and exhibit spectral efficiency; this has gained its popular support in the design industry, especially for fourth generation (4G) systems. However, the high peak to mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR) exhibited by OFDM signals require linear operation of analog devices, with the associated trade-off of poor power efficiency. Several methods to reduce this PMEPR problem have been effectively researched while revealing the shortcomings. In this study we recognize the need to present the effect of OFDM system parameters on the behaviour of the PMEPR. In order to provide a basis for systematic selection of OFDM design parameters for PMEPR mitigation, we first study the reaction of the PMEPR to OFDM design parameters, we then analyse the effect of OFDM design parameters on the shortcomings of the PMEPR-limiting clipping technique.Peer reviewe
PAR-Aware Large-Scale Multi-User MIMO-OFDM Downlink
We investigate an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based
downlink transmission scheme for large-scale multi-user (MU) multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. The use of OFDM causes a high
peak-to-average (power) ratio (PAR), which necessitates expensive and
power-inefficient radio-frequency (RF) components at the base station. In this
paper, we present a novel downlink transmission scheme, which exploits the
massive degrees-of-freedom available in large-scale MU-MIMO-OFDM systems to
achieve low PAR. Specifically, we propose to jointly perform MU precoding, OFDM
modulation, and PAR reduction by solving a convex optimization problem. We
develop a corresponding fast iterative truncation algorithm (FITRA) and show
numerical results to demonstrate tremendous PAR-reduction capabilities. The
significantly reduced linearity requirements eventually enable the use of
low-cost RF components for the large-scale MU-MIMO-OFDM downlink.Comment: To appear in IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communication
Visualization on colour based flow vector of thermal image for movement detection during interactive session
Recently thermal imaging is exploited in applications such as motion and face detection. It has drawn attention many researchers to build such technology to improve lifestyle. This work proposed a technique to detect and identify a motion in sequence images for the application in security monitoring system or outdoor surveillance. Conventional system might cause false information with the present of shadow. Thus, methods employed in this work are Canny edge detector method, Lucas Kanade and Horn Shunck algorithms, to overcome the major problem when using thresholding method, which is only intensity or pixel magnitude is considered instead of relationships between the pixels. The results obtained could be observed in flow vector parameter and the segmentation colour based image for the time frame from 1 to 10 seconds. The visualization of both the parameters clarified the movement and changes of pixel intensity between two frames by the supportive colour segmentation, either in smooth or rough motion. Thus, this technique may contribute to others application such as biometrics, military system, and surveillance machine
Flexible Multi-Group Single-Carrier Modulation: Optimal Subcarrier Grouping and Rate Maximization
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier
frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) are two commonly adopted modulation
schemes for frequency-selective channels. Compared to SC-FDE, OFDM generally
achieves higher data rate, but at the cost of higher transmit signal
peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) that leads to lower power amplifier
efficiency. This paper proposes a new modulation scheme, called flexible
multi-group single-carrier (FMG-SC), which encapsulates both OFDM and SC-FDE as
special cases, thus achieving more flexible rate-PAPR trade-offs between them.
Specifically, a set of frequency subcarriers are flexibly divided into
orthogonal groups based on their channel gains, and SC-FDE is applied over each
of the groups to send different data streams in parallel. We aim to maximize
the achievable sum-rate of all groups by optimizing the subcarrier-group
mapping. We propose two low-complexity subcarrier grouping methods and show via
simulation that they perform very close to the optimal grouping by exhaustive
search. Simulation results also show the effectiveness of the proposed FMG-SC
modulation scheme with optimized subcarrier grouping in improving the rate-PAPR
trade-off over conventional OFDM and SC-FDE.Comment: Submitted for possible conference publicatio
