    Computational study of a complex three-dimensional shock boundary-layer interaction

    Shock boundary–layer interactions occur in many high-speed aerodynamic flows and they can have a notable impact on design considerations due to the aerodynamic and heat transfer effects. Consequently there is a notable interest in understanding the ability of computational tools to calculate the complex flow fields that can arise in a range of engineering applications. Three-dimensional complex shock boundary layer interaction studies are expensive in both time and computational resources. Although recent studies have begun to focus on the use of more complex computational methods such as large eddy simulations, the aim of this research is to assess the ability of steady Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes turbulence models to simulate the interaction of a planar shock impinging on a cylindrical body under supersonic conditions and to determine if these models have a role to play in engineering design applications. The performance of both eddy viscosity and Reynolds stress models are evaluated relative to an established experimental test case. The impact of Reynolds number and impinging shock strength are also considered. Of the eddy viscosity models it was shown that the Spalart-Allmaras model is unsuitable for this complex interaction and that the k- and Reynolds stress methods both gave notably better agreement with the measured surface static pressures. Overall it was considered that the Reynolds stress method was the best model as it also provided better agreement with the measured surface flow topology. It was concluded that, although a steady Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes approach has known limitations for this type of complex interaction, within an engineering context it can also provide useful results when applied appropriately

    One of the main themes in fluid dynamics at present and in the future is going to be computational fluid dynamics with the primary focus on the determination of drag, flow separation, vortex flows, and unsteady flows. A computation of the flow of a viscous fluid requires an understanding and consideration of the physical aspects of the flow. This is done by identifying the flow regimes and the scales of fluid motion, and the sources of vorticity. Discussions of flow regimes deal with conditions of incompressibility, transitional and turbulent flows, Navier-Stokes and non-Navier-Stokes regimes, shock waves, and strain fields. Discussions of the scales of fluid motion consider transitional and turbulent flows, thin- and slender-shear layers, triple- and four-deck regions, viscous-inviscid interactions, shock waves, strain rates, and temporal scales. In addition, the significance and generation of vorticity are discussed. These physical aspects mainly guide computations of the flow of a viscous fluid

    Programs in theoretical and computational aerodynamics in the United States are described. Those aspects of programs that relate to aeronautics are detailed. The role of analysis at various levels of sophistication is discussed as well as the inverse solution techniques that are of primary importance in design methodology. The research is divided into the broad categories of application for boundary layer flow, Navier-Stokes turbulence modeling, internal flows, two-dimensional configurations, subsonic and supersonic aircraft, transonic aircraft, and the space shuttle.     Three-dimensional CFD simulations with large displacement of the geometries using a connectivity-change moving mesh approach

    This paper deals with three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations involving 3D moving geometries with large displacements on unstructured meshes. Such simulations are of great value to industry, but remain very time-consuming. A robust moving mesh algorithm coupling an elasticity-like mesh deformation solution and mesh optimizations was proposed in previous works, which removes the need for global remeshing when performing large displacements. The optimizations, and in particular generalized edge/face swapping, preserve the initial quality of the mesh throughout the simulation. We propose to integrate an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian compressible flow solver into this process to demonstrate its capabilities in a full CFD computation context. This solver relies on a local enforcement of the discrete geometric conservation law to preserve the order of accuracy of the time integration. The displacement of the geometries is either imposed, or driven by fluid–structure interaction (FSI). In the latter case, the six degrees of freedom approach for rigid bodies is considered. Finally, several 3D imposed-motion and FSI examples are given to validate the proposed approach, both in academic and industrial configurations

    Investigations on the Turbulent Wake of a Generic Space Launcher Geometry in the Hypersonic Flow Regime

    The turbulent wake flow of generic rocket configurations is investigated experimentally and numerically at a freestream Mach number of 6.0 and a unit Reynolds number of 10 x 10^6. The flow condition is based on the trajectory of Ariane V at an altitude of 50 km, which is used as baseline to address the overarching tasks of wake flows in the hypersonic regime like fluid-structural coupling, reverse hot jets and base heating. Experiments using pressure transducers and high-speed schlieren measurement technique were conducted to gain insight into the local pressure fluctuations on the base and the oscillations of the recompression shock. This experimental configuration features a wedge-profiled strut orthogonally mounted to the main body. Additionally, the influence of cylindrical nozzle extensions attached to the base of the rocket is investigated, which is the link to the numerical investigations. Here, the axisymmetric model possesses a cylindrical sting support of the same diameter as the nozzle extensions. The sting support allows investigations of a undisturbed wake flow. A time-accurate zonal RANS/LES approach was applied to identify shocks, expansion waves, and the highly unsteady recompression region numerically. Subsequently, experimental and numerical results in the strut-averted region are opposed with regard to the wall pressure and recompression shock frequency spectra. For the compared configurations, experimental pressure spectra exhibit dominant Strouhal numbers at about S rD = 0.03 and 0.27 and the recompression shock oscillates at 0.2. In general, the numerical pressure and recompression shock fluctuations agree satisfactorily to the experimental results. The experiments with a blunt base reveal base-pressure spectra with dominant Strouhal numbers at 0.08 at the center position and 0.145, 0.21 − 0.22 and 0.31 − 0.33 at the outskirts of the base

    Pressure Bifurcation Phenomenon on Supersonic Blowing Trailing Edges

    Turbine blades operating in transonic-supersonic regime develop a complex shock wave system at the trailing edge, a phenomenon that leads to unfavorable pressure perturbations downstream and can interact with other turbine stages. Understanding the fluid behavior of the area adjacent to the trailing edge is essential in order to determine the parameters that have influence on these pressure fluctuations. Colder flow, bled from the high-pressure compressor, is often purged at the trailing edge to cool the thin blade edges, affecting the flow behavior and modulating the intensity and angle of the shock waves system. However, this purge flow can sometimes generate non-symmetrical configurations due to a pressure difference that is provoked by the injected flow. In this work, a combination of RANS simulations and global stability analysis is employed to explain the physical reasons of this flow bifurcation. Analyzing the features that naturally appear in the flow and become dominant for some value of the parameters involved in the problem, an anti-symmetrical global mode, related to the sudden geometrical expansion of the trailing edge slot, is identified as the main mechanism that forces the changes in the flow topology.Comment: Submitted to AIAA Journa

    Numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations about three-dimensional configurations: A survey

    The numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations about three-dimensional configurations is reviewed. Formulational and computational requirements for the various Navier-Stokes approaches are examined for typical problems including the viscous flow field solution about a complete aerospace vehicle. Recent computed results, with experimental comparisons when available, are presented to highlight the presentation. The future of Navier-Stokes applications in three-dimensions is seen to be rapidly expanding across a broad front including internal and external flows, and flows across the entire speed regime from incompressible to hypersonic applications. Prospects for the future are described and recommendations for areas of concentrated research are indicated

    Development of computational fluid dynamics at NASA Ames Research Center

    Ames Research Center has the lead role among NASA centers to conduct research in computational fluid dynamics. The past, the present, and the future prospects in this field are reviewed. Past accomplishments include pioneering computer simulations of fluid dynamics problems that have made computers valuable in complementing wind tunnels for aerodynamic research. The present facilities include the most powerful computers built in the United States. Three examples of viscous flow simulations are presented: an afterbody with an exhaust plume, a blunt fin mounted on a flat plate, and the Space Shuttle. The future prospects include implementation of the Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Processing System that will provide the capability for solving the viscous flow field around an aircraft in a matter of minutes
