Numerical recovery strategies for parallel resilient Krylov linear solvers
International audienceAs the computational power of high performance computing (HPC) systems continues to increase by using a huge number of cores or specialized processing units, HPC applications are increasingly prone to faults. In this paper, we present a new class of numerical fault tolerance algorithms to cope with node crashes in parallel distributed environments. This new resilient scheme is designed at application level and does not require extra resources, i.e., computational unit or computing time, when no fault occurs. In the framework of iterative methods for the solution of sparse linear systems, we present numerical algorithms to extract relevant information from available data after a fault, assuming a separate mechanism ensures the fault detection. After data extraction, a well chosen part of missing data is regenerated through interpolation strategies to constitute meaningful inputs to restart the iterative scheme. We have developed these methods, referred to as Interpolation-Restart techniques, for Krylov subspace linear solvers. After a fault, lost entries of the current iterate computed by the solver are interpolated to define a new initial guess to restart the Krylov method. A well suited initial guess is computed by using the entries of the faulty iterate available on surviving nodes. We present two interpolation policies that preserve key numerical properties of well-known linear solvers, namely the monotonic decrease of the A-norm of the error of the conjugate gradient or the residual norm decrease of GMRES. The qualitative numerical behavior of the resulting scheme have been validated with sequential simulations, when the number of faults and the amount of data losses are varied. Finally, the computational costs associated with the recovery mechanism have been evaluated through parallel experiments
Scalable Resilience Against Node Failures for Communication-Hiding Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient and Conjugate Residual Methods
The observed and expected continued growth in the number of nodes in
large-scale parallel computers gives rise to two major challenges: global
communication operations are becoming major bottlenecks due to their limited
scalability, and the likelihood of node failures is increasing. We study an
approach for addressing these challenges in the context of solving large sparse
linear systems. In particular, we focus on the pipelined preconditioned
conjugate gradient (PPCG) method, which has been shown to successfully deal
with the first of these challenges. In this paper, we address the second
challenge. We present extensions to the PPCG solver and two of its variants
which make them resilient against the failure of a compute node while fully
preserving their communication-hiding properties and thus their scalability.
The basic idea is to efficiently communicate a few redundant copies of local
vector elements to neighboring nodes with very little overhead. In case a node
fails, these redundant copies are gathered at a replacement node, which can
then accurately reconstruct the lost parts of the solver's state. After that,
the parallel solver can continue as in the failure-free scenario. Experimental
evaluations of our approach illustrate on average very low runtime overheads
compared to the standard non-resilient algorithms. This shows that scalable
algorithmic resilience can be achieved at low extra cost.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 2 table
Resiliency in numerical algorithm design for extreme scale simulations
This work is based on the seminar titled ‘Resiliency in Numerical Algorithm Design for Extreme Scale Simulations’ held March 1–6, 2020, at Schloss Dagstuhl, that was attended by all the authors. Advanced supercomputing is characterized by very high computation speeds at the cost of involving an enormous amount of resources and costs. A typical large-scale computation running for 48 h on a system consuming 20 MW, as predicted for exascale systems, would consume a million kWh, corresponding to about 100k Euro in energy cost for executing 1023 floating-point operations. It is clearly unacceptable to lose the whole computation if any of the several million parallel processes fails during the execution. Moreover, if a single operation suffers from a bit-flip error, should the whole computation be declared invalid? What about the notion of reproducibility itself: should this core paradigm of science be revised and refined for results that are obtained by large-scale simulation? Naive versions of conventional resilience techniques will not scale to the exascale regime: with a main memory footprint of tens of Petabytes, synchronously writing checkpoint data all the way to background storage at frequent intervals will create intolerable overheads in runtime and energy consumption. Forecasts show that the mean time between failures could be lower than the time to recover from such a checkpoint, so that large calculations at scale might not make any progress if robust alternatives are not investigated. More advanced resilience techniques must be devised. The key may lie in exploiting both advanced system features as well as specific application knowledge. Research will face two essential questions: (1) what are the reliability requirements for a particular computation and (2) how do we best design the algorithms and software to meet these requirements? While the analysis of use cases can help understand the particular reliability requirements, the construction of remedies is currently wide open. One avenue would be to refine and improve on system- or application-level checkpointing and rollback strategies in the case an error is detected. Developers might use fault notification interfaces and flexible runtime systems to respond to node failures in an application-dependent fashion. Novel numerical algorithms or more stochastic computational approaches may be required to meet accuracy requirements in the face of undetectable soft errors. These ideas constituted an essential topic of the seminar. The goal of this Dagstuhl Seminar was to bring together a diverse group of scientists with expertise in exascale computing to discuss novel ways to make applications resilient against detected and undetected faults. In particular, participants explored the role that algorithms and applications play in the holistic approach needed to tackle this challenge. This article gathers a broad range of perspectives on the role of algorithms, applications and systems in achieving resilience for extreme scale simulations. Improving Performance of Iterative Methods by Lossy Checkponting
Iterative methods are commonly used approaches to solve large, sparse linear
systems, which are fundamental operations for many modern scientific
simulations. When the large-scale iterative methods are running with a large
number of ranks in parallel, they have to checkpoint the dynamic variables
periodically in case of unavoidable fail-stop errors, requiring fast I/O
systems and large storage space. To this end, significantly reducing the
checkpointing overhead is critical to improving the overall performance of
iterative methods. Our contribution is fourfold. (1) We propose a novel lossy
checkpointing scheme that can significantly improve the checkpointing
performance of iterative methods by leveraging lossy compressors. (2) We
formulate a lossy checkpointing performance model and derive theoretically an
upper bound for the extra number of iterations caused by the distortion of data
in lossy checkpoints, in order to guarantee the performance improvement under
the lossy checkpointing scheme. (3) We analyze the impact of lossy
checkpointing (i.e., extra number of iterations caused by lossy checkpointing
files) for multiple types of iterative methods. (4)We evaluate the lossy
checkpointing scheme with optimal checkpointing intervals on a high-performance
computing environment with 2,048 cores, using a well-known scientific
computation package PETSc and a state-of-the-art checkpoint/restart toolkit.
Experiments show that our optimized lossy checkpointing scheme can
significantly reduce the fault tolerance overhead for iterative methods by
23%~70% compared with traditional checkpointing and 20%~58% compared with
lossless-compressed checkpointing, in the presence of system failures.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, HPDC'1
Towards resilient parallel linear Krylov solvers: recover-restart strategies
The advent of extreme scale machines will require the use of parallel resources at an unprecedented scale, probably leading to a high rate of hardware faults. High Performance Computing (HPC) applications that aim at exploiting all these resources will thus need to be resilient, \emph{i.e.}, be able to compute a correct solution in presence of faults. In this work, we investigate possible remedies in the framework of the solution of large sparse linear systems that is often the inner most numerical kernel in many scientific and engineering applications and also one of the most time consuming part. More precisely, we present recovery followed by restarting strategies in the framework of Krylov subspace solvers where lost entries of the iterate are interpolated to define a new initial guess before restarting. In particular, we consider two interpolation policies that preserve key numerical properties of well-known solvers, namely the monotony decrease of the A-norm of the error of the conjugate gradient (CG) or the residual norm decrease of GMRES. Adaptive control in rollforward recovery for extreme scale multigrid
With the increasing number of compute components, failures in future
exa-scale computer systems are expected to become more frequent. This motivates
the study of novel resilience techniques. Here, we extend a recently proposed
algorithm-based recovery method for multigrid iterations by introducing an
adaptive control. After a fault, the healthy part of the system continues the
iterative solution process, while the solution in the faulty domain is
re-constructed by an asynchronous on-line recovery. The computations in both
the faulty and healthy subdomains must be coordinated in a sensitive way, in
particular, both under and over-solving must be avoided. Both of these waste
computational resources and will therefore increase the overall
time-to-solution. To control the local recovery and guarantee an optimal
re-coupling, we introduce a stopping criterion based on a mathematical error
estimator. It involves hierarchical weighted sums of residuals within the
context of uniformly refined meshes and is well-suited in the context of
parallel high-performance computing. The re-coupling process is steered by
local contributions of the error estimator. We propose and compare two criteria
which differ in their weights. Failure scenarios when solving up to
unknowns on more than 245\,766 parallel processes will be
reported on a state-of-the-art peta-scale supercomputer demonstrating the
robustness of the method
Resilience for Asynchronous Iterative Methods for Sparse Linear Systems
Large scale simulations are used in a variety of application areas in science and engineering to help forward the progress of innovation. Many spend the vast majority of their computational time attempting to solve large systems of linear equations; typically arising from discretizations of partial differential equations that are used to mathematically model various phenomena. The algorithms used to solve these problems are typically iterative in nature, and making efficient use of computational time on High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters involves constantly improving these iterative algorithms. Future HPC platforms are expected to encounter three main problem areas: scalability of code, reliability of hardware, and energy efficiency of the platform. The HPC resources that are expected to run the large programs are planned to consist of billions of processing units that come from more traditional multicore processors as well as a variety of different hardware accelerators. This growth in parallelism leads to the presence of all three problems.
Previously, work on algorithm development has focused primarily on creating fault tolerance mechanisms for traditional iterative solvers. Recent work has begun to revisit using asynchronous methods for solving large scale applications, and this dissertation presents research into fault tolerance for fine-grained methods that are asynchronous in nature. Classical convergence results for asynchronous methods are revisited and modified to account for the possible occurrence of a fault, and a variety of techniques for recovery from the effects of a fault are proposed. Examples of how these techniques can be used are shown for various algorithms, including an analysis of a fine-grained algorithm for computing incomplete factorizations. Lastly, numerous modeling and simulation tools for the further construction of iterative algorithms for HPC applications are developed, including numerical models for simulating faults and a simulation framework that can be used to extrapolate the performance of algorithms towards future HPC systems
