    The current power grid is no longer a feasible solution due to ever-increasing user demand of electricity, old infrastructure, and reliability issues and thus require transformation to a better grid a.k.a., smart grid (SG). The key features that distinguish SG from the conventional electrical power grid are its capability to perform two-way communication, demand side management, and real time pricing. Despite all these advantages that SG will bring, there are certain issues which are specific to SG communication system. For instance, network management of current SG systems is complex, time consuming, and done manually. Moreover, SG communication (SGC) system is built on different vendor specific devices and protocols. Therefore, the current SG systems are not protocol independent, thus leading to interoperability issue. Software defined network (SDN) has been proposed to monitor and manage the communication networks globally. This article serves as a comprehensive survey on SDN-based SGC. In this article, we first discuss taxonomy of advantages of SDNbased SGC.We then discuss SDN-based SGC architectures, along with case studies. Our article provides an in-depth discussion on routing schemes for SDN-based SGC. We also provide detailed survey of security and privacy schemes applied to SDN-based SGC. We furthermore present challenges, open issues, and future research directions related to SDN-based SGC.Comment: Accepte

    W-NINE: a two-stage emulation platform for mobile and wireless systems

    More and more applications and protocols are now running on wireless networks. Testing the implementation of such applications and protocols is a real challenge as the position of the mobile terminals and environmental effects strongly affect the overall performance. Network emulation is often perceived as a good trade-off between experiments on operational wireless networks and discrete-event simulations on Opnet or ns-2. However, ensuring repeatability and realism in network emulation while taking into account mobility in a wireless environment is very difficult. This paper proposes a network emulation platform, called W-NINE, based on off-line computations preceding online pattern-based traffic shaping. The underlying concepts of repeatability, dynamicity, accuracy and realism are defined in the emulation context. Two different simple case studies illustrate the validity of our approach with respect to these concepts

    Simulation Analysis for Multicast Context Delivery Network Mobility Management

    The objective of this paper is to presents analyses for multicast network mobility management using NS3. It is mainly to verify the proposed network architecture and its activities.  NS3 is a network simulator that implements virtually network prototype that is close to real implementation. Network mobility management has become a popular topic in networking research due to its ability to mitigate mobile IPv6 problems. However the standard network mobility management only introduced to support unicast traffic. Hence this paper integrates context transfer and multicast fast reroute, and implements this integration to the standard network mobility management. This implementation enables multicast to network mobility management with high network performance support. The analyses focus on the throughput performance.     A SECURITY-CENTRIC APPLICATION OF PRECISION TIME PROTOCOL WITHIN ICS/SCADA SYSTEMS

    Industrial Control System and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (ICS/SCADA) systems are key pieces of larger infrastructure that are responsible for safely operating transportation, industrial operations, and military equipment, among many other applications. ICS/SCADA systems rely on precise timing and clear communication paths between control elements and sensors. Because ICS/SCADA system designs place a premium on timeliness and availability of data, security ended up as an afterthought, stacked on top of existing (insecure) protocols. As precise timing is already resident and inherent in most ICS/SCADA systems, a unique opportunity is presented to leverage existing technology to potentially enhance the security of these systems. This research seeks to evaluate the utility of timing as a mechanism to mitigate certain types of malicious cyber-based operations such as a man-on-the-side (MotS) attack. By building a functioning ICS/SCADA system and communication loop that incorporates precise timing strategies in the reporting and control loop, specifically the precision time protocol (PTP), it was shown that certain kinds of MotS attacks can be mitigated by leveraging precise timing.Navy Cyber Warfare Development Group, Suitland, MDLieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release.     The state of peer-to-peer network simulators

    Networking research often relies on simulation in order to test and evaluate new ideas. An important requirement of this process is that results must be reproducible so that other researchers can replicate, validate and extend existing work. We look at the landscape of simulators for research in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks by conducting a survey of a combined total of over 280 papers from before and after 2007 (the year of the last survey in this area), and comment on the large quantity of research using bespoke, closed-source simulators. We propose a set of criteria that P2P simulators should meet, and poll the P2P research community for their agreement. We aim to drive the community towards performing their experiments on simulators that allow for others to validate their results
